Hey r/opensource

I'm mapping out where open source is successfully competing with major commercial players ($1B+ valuation/revenue).

Cal vs Calendly is a great example. Documenso is also another good example, they're building an OSS alternative to DocuSign ($18B).

What other open source projects are meaningfully competing in big markets?

I'm building an open source alternative to Drata / Vanta (combined $5B valuation) so it would be cool to see who else is doing the same.

this is what I'm working on if you want to check it out

John Bush may not have gotten the memo that Bitcoin is not worth our time, but I think he's onto Monero and most certainly has kept up with what the US government is doing with crypto. Definitely worth a listen.

MAL | AniList | ANN

Though Hak continues to fight off the soldiers pursuing him, a poison prevents him from fighting like his usual self.

Hulu - Dub & Sub

Crunchyroll - Dub & Sub

Questions of the Day:

  1. Did Tae-jun's reaction to Yona's presumed death change your opinion of him?

  2. What do you think of Su-won's first declaration as king, and the hints that he's conflicted about betraying Yona and Hak?

  3. What are your first impressions of the oracle?

Remember to tag your spoilers!

Episode 5: Goodbye

(Corresponds to first half of movie 3 Yakusoku.)

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode

Show Information:

MAL | AniList | ANN | AniDB

(First-timers may want to consider staying out of Show Information until we are done, though it's not as urgent in WaSuYu's case since the viewer can be expected to infer most of what they're gesturing at from YuYuYu S1. Also, double-checking AniDB actually looks almost completely safe for first-timers wrt WaSuYu after having the biggest spoiler issues wrt S1, and that's the case even for the WaSuYu movie entries where the editors actually bothered to flesh out the show tags? Who knew?)

Legal Streams:

(As per livechart.me; additional legal streams may be available outside the US.)

Hidive | Amazon Prime Video

What about Great Mankai Chapter?

Likely coming in late February as a second stage of this rewatch continuation, but I need to be able to confirm continued interest and nail down the schedule before committing.

A Reminder to Rewatchers:

I would like to remind you: please do not spoil the experience for our first-timers! Doubly important in WaSuYu's case, I know how y'all are about ~~how Gin fucking dies (filler characters here, say hi!)~~. Please don't.

There is one exception to this: As this rewatch is covering prequels/sequels only and all viewers are expected to either have been in YuYuYu proper or have seen the show on their own time and thus be familiar with YuYuYu's plot points, Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru S1 plot points are not considered spoilers in the context of this rewatch and are considered fair game to talk about outside of spoiler tags, just like discussion of S1 plot points would be in episode discussion threads for an airing sequel. (Or in other words, we will be treating YuYuYu spoilers exactly like Mai-HiME spoilers were in Mai-Otome or Madoka Magica plot points were in MagiReco.)

(Time for) Friend Activities!

Question(s) of the Day:

(The problem with an episode like this in a prequel when the first-timers already zeroed in on some of the episode themes ahead of time is that it makes thinking of QotDs REALLY FUCKING DIFFICULT. Especially when I have a hunch that one I might otherwise have asked is going to be a source of active discussion in the comments in any event and I want to let that play out naturally.)

  1. Favorite festival activity? (From this episode or from IRL, take your pick.)

  2. Is it a terrible day for rain?

SPECIAL BONUS Theory and Analysis of the Day:

Wait, what? Wasn't I not doing these for YuYuYu? Well, usually that is the case... but sometimes one simply must highlight comments that are sufficiently prescient in hindsight:

Theory of the Day:

Brought to you by one u/BosuW:

Her flashbacks before her final charge also reflect something you frequently hear from war vets, even Japanese. You join the army for king and country, but you fight for the ones beside you, and the ones back home. Nationalism is too abstract of an idea to pull strength and bravery from when you're in the thick of it. If the show intends to really drive home the criticism of Japanese nationalism next episode we'll get a funeral scene where the Taisha remark about how Gin has brought great honor to her family through her sacrifice. S1 pussied out so I'm not holding out hope though

Show heard you talking shit!

Analysis of the Day:

Goes to u/Vaadwaur... in the episode 3 thread, for pointing out something that I had to have pointed out for me when I went back to look at the old episode discussion thread for this episode:

I've been dodging it BUT Tougou said something really, really wrong and I suspect we are supposed to note it: She said she wanted to see Gin in a white kimono. Historically, white kimonos are burial kimonos. Now with western ifluence I won't claim to know what a wedding kimono would look like but if we didn't have any other flags, there you go.

Catching one of the bitterest pieces of irony this episode was going to throw at you ahead of time was very nicely done!

"A provocative act by former Australian of the Year Grace Tame has stolen the limelight – again – at a morning tea with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for recipients of the 2025 awards.

The 2021 winner wore a “F*** Murdoch” T-shirt when she was greeted by Mr Albanese and his fiancee, Jodie Haydon, at The Lodge in Canberra on Saturday.

The PM and Ms Haydon smiled and greeted Ms Tame, but there was no visible reaction to the incendiary statement on her shirt." https://michaelwest.com.au/from-side-eye-to-show-stopper-as-tame-stuns-pm/

I'm a software developer at a medium size company where I would get a project and a timeframe to get said project done. This time frame is insane not because of the lack of time to get it done but because of the excessive amount of time it would give me. something I could get done in 2 weeks is given 3 months to complete. My first 6 months at the company were spent with me doing said projects in the amount of time they took me as opposed to the amount of time given for them to be completed and when my performance review came back I assumed my raise and bonus would reflect my performance.

As many of you can probably guess from where I'm posting this story, my raise did not in fact reflect my performance and instead was the base amount my contract guaranteed. My response to this was not to complain as I frankly didn't care and instead to just stop submitting my progress at the same pace I had been doing it. I still did it in the 2 weeks for 3 months but it was a work from home job and I would just add in bits and pieces to keep the progress at the expected pace while having the completed project on a personal machine.

I still work there and have been working there for 4 years now and and very happy spending maybe 2 months of the year doing my job and the working my second job at a different buisness as a software developer as its a work from home job and there are no mandatory check ins or anything of the sort.

I've been offered a decent raise to return to my original pace multiple times but I've declined each time and after around a year and a half they accepted the current pace as I still do quality work with no delays.

I guess don't shaft me originally and expect me to change my mind when you realize my value? no idea I just make way more money than I would have needed to and now effectively get triple my salary as my other job makes twice my lousy job.

And if you'd decide to leave, where would you go?

Context for why I'm asking: I'm trans and currently live in Minnesota, I moved here from Florida so I have some idea of how miserable big moves can be. I can get EU citizenship which makes me very lucky, but... Do I sit here and hope Minnesota can protect me from 🥭 or do I try to build a life somewhere else, again?

I have a Surface 3 running Windows 10 22H2. After Windows 10 has sunset, What OS should I run? Linux Mint? Will that work with a touch-based machine? Or should I get something like BitDefender to keep Windows running longer? It's not my daily driver. So, I would only use it to watch Plex, Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+.
