Summary

Simon Vickers, 50, is on trial for the fatal stabbing of his 14-year-old daughter, Scarlett Vickers, during a kitchen play-fight at their Darlington home in July.

The court heard the family was throwing food and utensils while making dinner, and Vickers claims Scarlett accidentally impaled herself on a knife he was holding.

Prosecutors argue the wound was too deep to be accidental, alleging deliberate action.

Vickers denies murder and manslaughter, describing the incident as a tragic accident.

Miami-Dade’s newly elected property appraiser says it’s time for county property estimators to factor in the harm that climate change will bring to the local real estate market — and to lower property values accordingly.

I bought a laptop with windows 11 instaled in its 256gb nmve ssd. I want to install linux but I want to first create an image of the ssd and store it in an external 4tb ssd with a ext4 filesystem (that I use for different backups) so in case I want to sell the laptop later I can restore windows 11 to the same ssd from the image. So what i'm planning to do is:

  • dd if=/dev/drive_device of=external_ssd/images/windows11.img

for creating the image and swapping if and of for restoring. My question is if creating the image of a drive with a windows 11 filesystem and storing it in a ext4 filesystem is possible or can have any issue. I ask this because I read that in the case of cloning the target drive will end up with the filesystem of the source drive in case they are different, which caused me some hesitation.

How does it differ culturally from here? Should I avoid some things or are there Chinese social media norms I should be aware of?

New users have piled in to the Chinese social media app RedNote just days before a proposed US ban on the popular social media app TikTok, as the lesser-known company rushes to capitalize on the sudden influx while walking a delicate line of moderating English-language content.

Original Title: My grandma had lung cancer after smoking 3 packs a day for 58 years. LMG never made a video warning of the dangers of smoking and refuses to join a class action suit against tobacco companies, clearly because Linus doesn't want bad optics. Why does Linus hate my grandma and made her die?

It's totally unacceptable that LMG has never made a video on the main channel about the health risks of smoking. Sure, Linus has explicitly said in his podcast that tobacco is bad for you, but who even watches that? How was my grandma supposed to know she was puffing on death sticks if there was never an LTT video denouncing smoking? Not even a Short Circuit one at the very least! It's obviously Linus's moral responsibility to signal boost the dangers of smoking and his failure in doing so can only mean he wishes us all in the community a life of addiction and painful deaths complete with yellow teeth and severe halitosis.

I just watched a video at the Player Axis channel where they went into details about the lawsuit they're moving against Philip Morris and they mentioned Linus is not joining, the bastard! Why is Linus so pro-tobacco and wants his own audience to develop emphysema? Only an evil shrewd greedy millionaire businessman would put his own profits over the health of the community and I'm disgusted! it's like Linus has forgotten his origins and the memory of his third-degree cousin who had to amputate his foot due to Buerger's disease. Typical!

Linus should be held accountable for being directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of tobacco-related deaths and disabilities around the world due to his inaction on the matter. A media company with the visibility and influence of LMG has the obligation of calling out Big Tobacco, yet they choose not to because it would make them look bad. They should make at least three hour-long videos a week exposing the cigarette scam, anything less than that means they're complicit with death squads in Costa Rica! Why does Linus personally endorse genocide like that?

Shame on you, Linus! Repent of your twisted ways, you could save smokers' lives, but you refuse to because you hate my poor grandma! Her final words on her deathbed, spoken via a synthesizer because her vocal cords were gone were, "this segue way to our sponsor!"

Dr. Michael Parenti 1986 Lecture "Yellow Parenti"

Blackshirts and Reds: Rational Fascism and the Overthrow of Communism

But that expropriation of the Third World—has been going on for 400 years—brings us to another revelation—namely, that the Third World is not poor. You don't go to poor countries to make money. There are very few poor countries in this world. Most countries are rich! The Philippines are rich! Brazil is rich! Mexico is rich! Chile is rich—only the people are poor. But there's billions to be made there, to be carved out, and to be taken—there's been billions for 400 years! The Capitalist European and North American powers have carved out and taken the timber, the flax, the hemp, the cocoa, the rum, the tin, the copper, the iron, the rubber, the bauxite, the slaves, and the cheap labour. They have taken out of these countries—these countries are not underdeveloped—they're overexploited!

I'm making a language with a lot of inspiration from rust and was experimenting with alternative enum syntax. It relies on literals to be types in order to convey information on the different options.

I don't really get on well with Typescript but having the ability to use literals as types is something I really liked as a lot of the times I use static string literals as errors. and having all the variants upcast through types makes it easier to do pattern matching.

Plain-text transcription of the image:

// using rust like enum syntax
Option<T> (
  | "Some" T
  | "None"
)

fn match_demo() {
  let some_option = Option "Some" "text";
  let none_option = Option "None";

  match some_option {
    "Some" "hello" => print("oh hi there"),
    "Some" text => print("Option is {text}"),
    "None" => print("Option is {text}"),
  }
}

// Or maybe more experimental syntax
Option<T> (
  | T
  | ()
)

fn match_demo2() {
  let opt = Option "something";
  match opt {
    "text" => "matching directly",
    var => "bind to variable",
    () => "nothing",
  }
}

According to Sikyong Penpa Tsering, President of the Tibetan government-in-exile, the sharp decline in Tibetan arrivals is attributed to increased Chinese control following the 2008 uprising. Tsering also pointed to demographic shifts in Tibet, noting that there are fewer children due to reduced family sizes.

Speaking to ANI, President of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Sikyong Penpa Tsering said, "Just like any other community, the Tibetan diaspora community is also facing a lot of social and demographic change. One reason is, of course, from 1959-60 people proceeded or followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama--about 80-85 thousand Tibetans who came to India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Then till about the early 80s, there was no movement from Tibet at all, and from the early 80s onwards, some Tibetans were coming out during Hua Guofeng's time, and then from the 90s and year 2000, there were quite many Tibetans coming out up to 2008. We used to receive any number between 2,500 to 3,500 Tibetans every year. Most of them were young children who were left behind to study in India, not knowing whether they would be able to meet their families again or not."

This drastic decline has resulted in the Tibetan Reception Centre in Khaniyara village near Dharamshala standing largely vacant.

[...]

"After the 2008 uprising in Tibet, there was more control inside Tibet, and there may be other reasons why those things are happening. After Xi Jinping came into power, the control over the whole of China, more particularly over the Tibetan people, has been very strong, and even small variables like tourist guides who have been bringing these people over the Himalayas by taking money--have also been removed from Lhasa, as a lot more pressure on the Nepalese government," said Tsering.

[...]

Tsering highlighted efforts in Western countries to create new compact communities. "The larger number of Tibetans are in North America, Europe, Australia--all these countries. So there have been some initiatives from some Tibetans, particularly in Manasota, where we are talking about at least 3,000 to 5,000 Tibetans. They are planning to acquire about 80 acres of land to accommodate about 300 families where the compact Tibetan communities [can thrive]. Another group is also planning to open a charter school for Tibetans. These are new ecosystems within the Tibetan community," he said.
