A record low number of Americans are drinking, according to a new Gallup poll released this week. Just 54% of Americans said they consume alcohol at all.

Gallup has been tracking Americans’ drinking behavior since 1939, and their views of the health implications of drinking since 2001. For the first time, a majority of Americans – 53% – said that moderate drinking, defined as one or two drinks per day, is bad for your health.

I'm extremely interested in the prospect of self-hosted cloud gaming. Has anyone had any success with any specific platforms, such as Sunshine + Moonlight? Any ins/outs to the necessary software or hardware?

As of June 2025, over 1,400 veterans of Israeli intelligence are now working in U.S. tech—with 900 of those coming from Unit 8200 alone. That number comes from a database of people who publicly identify themselves as being both former Israeli intelligence officers and holding a job in U.S. tech on their LinkedIn profiles.

The database was assembled by an independent researcher, who is remaining anonymous for personal security and has dubbed the database the “Eagle Mission” influence network. The 1,400 people are self-identified veterans or active reserve members of Unit 8200, Israeli military intelligence, and the IDF Cyber Defense Directorate working in senior and mid-level engineering and security roles at major U.S. tech firms with offices in Israel, the U.S., and Europe. Drop Site crosschecked many of the records in the database for accuracy.

“This does not mean that every person who served in Unit 8200 is an Israeli spy looking to send classified data back to Tel Aviv,” the researcher emphasized. “But it does create a serious vulnerability. No other country has this kind of access to the American tech sector. We obsess over Chinese involvement in the tech industry and worry about corporate espionage, but Israeli penetration rarely gets mentioned.”

The global tech giant Microsoft is one of the most prominent employers of Unit 8200 alumni, employing roughly 250 veterans of the unit, alongside other major multinational companies including Nvidia, Meta, Google, Intel, and Apple, many of whom employ dozens of individuals drawn from the unit. Microsoft was recently revealed to have closely collaborated with Unit 8200 leadership on the creation of cloud services intended to store millions of private communications of Palestinians living under military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. Microsoft declined to comment.

Police in Hong Kong have questioned the father of an activist based in Canada with a $35,000 bounty on his head, according to local media.

Alan Keung, a Christian pastor and founder of the online publication Free HK Media, was jailed in Hong Kong on sedition charges in March, 2023, over a book he and two others sold at an independent literary fair. After his release, Mr. Keung relocated to Canada, where he has been involved in efforts to form a “parliament in exile” made up of pro-democracy activists from the Chinese territory.

Dressed in a clerical collar and protective gear, Mr. Keung was a common sight at pro-democracy protests in 2019. He worked as a volunteer medic as demonstrators clashed with police during months of increasingly violent unrest, which ended in July, 2020, with the passage of a draconian national security law that has since been used to stamp out essentially all opposition in Hong Kong.

[...]

In addition, numerous Hong Kong-based relatives and associates of bounty targets have been brought in for questioning by police in recent months.

The rewards, which have little chance of leading to arrests given that most targets live in countries without extradition treaties with Hong Kong, have sparked widespread condemnation of the territory’s government, hampering ongoing efforts to reform Hong Kong’s image and promote a return of foreign business and tourism.

[...]

Last week, the G7, along with the European Union and several other countries, issued another statement warning that bounties placed on Hong Kongers for “exercising their freedom of expression” were an act of transnational repression that “undermines national security, state sovereignty, human rights, and the safety of communities.”

Even as it continues to bomb the Palestinian civilians it is starving, Israel is pushing ahead with what may be its ultimate - or perhaps penultimate - vision for Gaza: the physical confinement of survivors in a guarded zone on Rafah's rubble - an actual concentration camp.

If it is not stopped, pathogens could yet become Israel's deadliest weapon in Gaza.

Disease is often not merely a side effect but a major agent in genocides, from smallpox that devastated the Indigenous peoples of the Americas to the barracks of Auschwitz. Concentration camps in particular have a long and ghastly history as places where, by design or otherwise, disease kills as many as - or even more than - those directly killed by the genocidal regime that confines them.

MONTREAL - Montreal police have opened a criminal investigation into reports that people at a music festival last weekend were allegedly poisoned without their knowledge.

Police say six people have reported feeling a "sharp prick" in the back of their body while they were in the crowd at the îLESONIQ music festival at Parc Jean-Drapeau.

They say that afterward some of the victims reported feeling dizzy.

Police say it's premature to release more information or confirm if the incidents are linked.

In a news release, Montreal police said the alleged cases of poisoning are an opportunity to remind people to stay vigilant during large gatherings.

Montreal police say they are working closely with security teams from the festival, which was held Aug. 9-10, and promoter Evenko.

I assume it did well if they're looking to make more in the line, but I LOVED this game for chill podcast and audiobook listening. Pretty curious to see where they're going with it.

Several hundred people gathered for a pro-Ukraine rally in Anchorage, Alaska, where U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are set to meet Friday.

The high-stakes summit — the first in-person meeting between an American president and Putin since the latter launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is meant to lay the ground for a ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not invited to the summit, scheduled to kick off around 11 a.m. local time at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Protesters started to gather early on Friday morning ahead of Putin's arrival in Anchorage, chanting pro-Kyiv slogans and demanded that Russia return the 20,000 Ukrainian children it has kidnapped from the war zone. The protesters also took umbrage at Trump inviting Putin to a meeting on American soil in Alaska, which used to be Russian territory until it was sold to the United States in 1867.
