A group of Quaker congregations has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over a policy change by Donald Trump designed to make it easier for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to locate and remove illegal immigrants.

The new U.S. president changed the law to allow ICE agents to conduct operations in "sensitive locations," including houses of worship, playgrounds, schools and hospitals, without prior approval from their supervisors, which was previously required.

Why It Matters

The Trump administration is seeking to crack down on illegal immigration. The president made immigration a central theme of his successful campaign for office, and Americans largely support his mass deportation plans.

A New York Times/Ipsos poll, carried out from January 2 to 10, found 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported such plans. Eighty-eight percent supported "deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records." Large majorities of Democrats and Republicans agreed that the immigration system is broken.

Summary

Experts are warning against sharing sensitive data with DeepSeek, a Chinese AI app that has become the most downloaded free app in the US and UK.

Concerns include potential Chinese government data access, alignment with Chinese state narratives (e.g., censoring topics like Tiananmen Square), and user data exploitation.

DeepSeek stores user data on servers in China, governed by laws requiring compliance with national intelligence efforts.

While praised for its affordability and innovation, critics urge caution, citing risks of surveillance, disinformation, and privacy breaches.

Fanatical already sends far too many newsletters, but that's the requirement to get whatever free games they hand out, but that's just too far given the current geopolitical climate...

I moved to a really cold and dry climate which has made my cheeks light up like a christmas tree. I've always lived in humid cities so this isn't something I've had to think about.

Anyone have suggestions on reasonably priced moisturizers that could help out? I checked out Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, but at $60+, I'd like to check if any comparable alternatives exist at a lower cost.

Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the White House that she spoke with the president on Monday night and he indicated that Feb. 1 was "still on the books" for the introduction of damaging duties against Canada and Mexico.

Ottawa has prepared multiple options for retaliatory tariffs, depending on what Trump ultimately does. Trump initially promised 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs in response to what he called the failure of both countries to curb the illegal flow of people and drugs across the border.

Canadian officials have been cycling through Washington in recent weeks to promote Canada's $1.3-billion border security plan and make the case that tariffs would hurt both economies.

Here's a Jan 25th 2025 quote on X/Twitter (which his firm helped Musk buy) from Marc Anderessen, head of VC firm Andreessen Horowitz/a16z.

"A world in which human wages crash from AI -- logically, necessarily -- is a world in which productivity growth goes through the roof, and prices for goods and services crash to near zero. Consumer cornucopia. Everything you need and want for pennies."

This is the world Big Tech is building for us. Given their hold over the current US administration, barring a political revolution - there's not much to stop them for the next 4 years.

If their power to create that world via AI & robotics is seemingly unstoppable, what about a counter-intuitive idea? Engage them on it seriously. At the very least the transition to this world might need the kind of emergency economic supports the Covid era had.

It seems strange Big Tech is so open about what it intends to do, yet we are still not taking it seriously, despite them saying it all out loud.

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, Jan 24 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he would sign an executive order to begin the process of fundamentally overhauling or eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "FEMA has turned out to be a disaster ... I think we recommend that FEMA go away," he said during a tour of North Carolina to see damage done by Hurricane Helene last year.
