edit: I just want a rock stable version of Fedora vanilla GNOME.

My wife isn't a Linux person, but has Fedora installed on her computer. It's noninvasive as she just uses it for basic web browsing. I'm cautious that there's a chance that an update could break it.

Her Windows work laptop is giving her trouble, so I may put Linux on it. Fedora makes sense since she's used to it, but I don't want to risk an update breaking her work system. Is Silverblue a fully stable Fedora release, or should I go with another distro?

There may soon be an end to the government shutdown that has been causing massive flight delays for weeks, but the travel nightmare caused by the political chaos in Washington showed no signs of abating Monday.

A day after senators approved a preliminary agreement to end the impasse, which is now in its 41st day, the Federal Aviation Administration announced it would continue to restrict commercial flights into and out of some of the country's busiest airports.

As of Monday morning, more than 1,400 flights had been canceled of the more than 25,000 scheduled, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. On Sunday, more than 2,600 flights were canceled, which amounted to about 10% of all scheduled flights. It's not clear how many were scheduled cancellations because of the shutdown and how many were canceled for other reasons, such as weather.

Hi, all. I hope you are doing well.

TL;DR, there is a very creative Wayland compositor named NEWM that needs some help being maintained. If you are at all interested, follow the Github link and check it out.

So a while ago I stumbled upon NEWM, a fascinating Wayland compositor made with laptops and trackpads in mind. It operates similarly to scrolling compositors such as Niri, yet also very differently. Really, there is no comparison to be drawn, as NEWM does something quite unique.

Unfortunately, the project is barely being maintained at the moment. There is only one dev still attached to it, and he has a full time job, which makes things tricky. I'm not any kind of coder to speak of, so I would be of no use on that front. But I spoke to him, and he said I could reach out here and try to find someone who wants to tinker with it. As far as I understand it, the main issue right now is getting NEWM up to date with wlroots. If you have any Python / Wayland experience, any contribution would be greatly appreciated. There is also a Discord where you can talk to the dev directly to coordinate your efforts.

Thanks in advance.

(Washington DC) As Democrats cross the aisle to reopen the government after the longest government shut down in US history, republicans have taken to the offensive. House lawmakers have presented a list of demands to take on the Senate resolution, which is required to reopen the government.

“We have the Democrats on the ropes,” said one house congressman who asked to speak off the record. “After a full month with no pay to government workers, a collapsing food aid system, and the FAA shutting down flights, this is the ideal time to demand concessions.” Demands on the list are extensive, and include introduction of certain topics of legislature without filibuster, the creation of “priority states” for receiving federal disaster aide, and attendance of closed-door Democratic meetings by republicans for “monitoring.”

Some political pundits wonder if the democrats have enough fight left in them to resist. “Some of these demands are extensive. I mean, ‘Colorado?” It just says the name of the state, nothing else. ‘Less press time’ is also there, with no explanation. It’s like they started with a set number of demands and had to fill it all in.”

Democrats decry the demands, saying they have given up everything in the fight, conceded, and now are being asked for more. “We don’t know how to negotiate when republicans don’t have the good of the American people in mind.

Republicans concur. Leo Sturbgetter, a cow detangler in Eastern Colorado, said, “I can believe the Democrats are even talking about this. It’s like they don’t understand how to negotiate when we don’t have the good of the American people in mind.”

I started watching Count Dracula (1970) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065569/ - on tubi, however halfway thru I had to go do something and by the time I got back, tubi had enshittified further, such that I had to sign in if I wanted to watch more than the first 15 minutes.

That's too bad, it was pretty good so far. It had Christopher Lee (best known for playing Saruman and Count Dooku) as Dracula. Klaus Kinski, who was in one of my fave movies Aguirre the Wrath of God, was Renfield. It looked like they'd gotten rid of Lord Goddaming bc the american guy (who was no longer american?) was engaged to Lucy. But other than that it seemed fairly faithful to the book.

But that just reminds me again that there's no more Dracula Readthrough here on !vampires@lemmy.zip! Maybe I'll have start reading physical media again?!?!!
