Hi,

I am looking for a good and lightweight blogging solution.

I imagine I can just go with a static site generator like jekyll but I'd like something else... it would be a plus if it can federate :)

Any ideas?

Thanks !

EDIT: I forgot to say that obviously wordpress does not enters in the "lightweight" category ;)

I use my computer for so many things and I have about 200 applications on my computer. I don't know why, but it bothers me that everything happens on this one machine as well as seeing so many app icons (even grouped into folders). It's not an option, but I'd prefer to have dedicated computers for broad categories of tasks (Audio DAW, video editing, bash scripting, web dev, gaming, system stuff like disk space visualisation, web apps for social media and video sites, games, communications, office, music and film.

So I was thinking of installing something like openSUSE in a VM on my iMac. But I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Putting CPU intensive applications onto the VM is pointless since they'll struggle more. But putting convenient apps on the VM seems like a mistake too because it means that quick utilities like calendar, voice memos, alarms, contacts etc become inconvenient.

Anyway. I miss the days when all these functions weren't service by the same hardware and screen. Does anyone who can relate have any ideas?

One thing I've done is have my music served by Navidrome on a headless server.

Some friends asked me too play Lethal Company with him today, and i decided to do that over a 4th day straight of AC Shadows. The screenshots for this one will be a bit light because i have to go through and manually censor all my friend's info to respect their privacy.

We ended up buying this Disco Ball for our drone ship. It ended up being a constant in the entire playthrough. We had it running the entire time. Somehow it got everyone but me killed, as i assume it attracted the enemy. The TV i bought probably didn't help either though.

Said TV is pictured above. Apparently my friends could all here it through the radio in the game, which was fun because they got to chew me out for watching TV instead of doing my job (it was all in good fun though).

At one point we landed on a moon that was foggy (seen in the screenshot), and immediately my friends i was playing with walked off a cliff and drowned to death. It was even funnier to hear though because one of them radioed in as they were drowning just to announce they were drowning, but it was all muffled because they were, you guessed it, drowning. That's not the only time it happened too. There was a second time where they immediately jumped off a ship and drowned in mud. it hadn't even been a minute before they all died. I had to pull the ship out because i wouldn't be able to get all the scrap alone.

Here's a bonus picture of my friend in a Rabbit Suit

ABOARD THE HNLMS LUYMES—Belgian Navy Commander Erik Kockx was patrolling the Baltic Sea recently when he got word that a ship on NATO’s watchlist was acting in a suspicious manner. After leaving a Russian port, it had slowed down while passing near a pipeline on the sea bottom. The Luymes sailed toward the tanker to investigate.

Kockx leads a task force in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s new mission to police the inland sea that its members share with Russia. NATO in January launched the operation, dubbed Baltic Sentry, after a string of undersea cables and pipelines were damaged by ships—many with links to Russia—that had dragged their anchors.

“We are functioning as security cameras at sea,” said Kockx, whose usual duty is clearing unexploded mines from the busy waterway.

Summary

Utah became the first state to ban fluoride in public drinking water after Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed legislation prohibiting local decisions on fluoridation.

Cox cited cost and personal choice, likening fluoride to government “medication.”

The ban faces opposition from dentists and health experts, who argue fluoride prevents cavities and benefits low-income communities.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans receive fluoridated water. Some cities have already removed fluoride, and a recent court order requires the EPA to regulate high levels that may affect children’s intellectual development.

I wanted to bring to your attention a feature from Voyager for Lemmy that could be a valuable addition to Summit.

Voyager has a "Migrate Subreddits" tool designed SPECIFICALLY for Reddit users transitioning to Lemmy.

This tool streamlines the migration process by helping users easily find communities on Lemmy that are similar to the subreddits they've subscribed to on Reddit.

The process in Voyager is straightforward:

  1. Users log in to their Reddit account and access their subscription list via the "multireddit of your subscriptions" link available in the sidebar.
  2. They copy the link and paste it into Voyager, allowing the tool to automatically search for corresponding communities on Lemmy.

This feature significantly lowers the friction for users migrating to a new platform by minimizing the effort required to find and rebuild their communities.

Has Summit ever considered incorporating a similar "Migrate Communities" feature?

It could be an excellent addition to assist new users transitioning from Reddit, making it easier for them to rediscover and reconnect with the communities they care about most.

Such a feature could also enhance Summit's onboarding process and attract a growing audience of users exploring alternative platforms.

If this is something Summit could implement, it might be worth exploring further.

Image of "Migrate Subreddits" Feature on Voyager:

EDIT:

The way that it works is: when you enter the Multireddit link, it will show up like this:

And if you then tap on the link that you just added, you will get this:

And then, if you tap on one of them, depending on whether or not there is a Lemmy community alternative to the subreddit: you will either get this:

I read and enjoyed Kafka on the Shore years ago (although I could barely tell you what it was about now). After enjoying Kafka I've tried a few times to read some of his other stuff and inevitably end up stalling out. This has happened with IQ84, Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and now with Sputnik Sweetheart. It's always during the first chapter that I get bogged down in this miasma of being bored, and the reoccurring theme of one of the characters going on and on about some classical composer and the sublimity of their works (blah blah blah). It starts to grate on me as pretentious, boring and droll. Does anyone else feel this way? I was honestly kind of surprised that he has consistently used this same device in multiple stories I've read, to the point that now it just feels silly that there's always some character right from the get go that is this BIG classical music aficionado. It might seem to be a weird thing to key on, but it just bores me to encounter it over and over, right from the start.

Hong Kong (AFP) – Debt-laden Chinese property giant Vanke reported annual losses of 49.5 billion yuan ($6.8 billion) on Monday, citing falling sales and shrinking profit margins despite Beijing's attempts to revive the housing market.

Vanke said 2024 was an "exceptionally challenging year" in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange and apologised for "distress caused... due to the significant decline in sales, substantial losses and pressure on our liquidity".

Beijing has in recent years grappled with a prolonged crisis in the country's vast real estate sector, once a key pillar of the economy but now beset with sprawling debt.

Hong Kong-listed Vanke is part-owned by the government of Shenzhen and was China's fourth-largest real estate firm by sales last year, according to research firm CRIC.

Vanke said on Monday that it "failed to break free from expansion inertia of high-debt, high-turnover and high-leverage in a timely manner, which led to problems" such as aggressive investment and over-expansion.

Last year marked Vanke's first annual loss since it was listed in 1991 and the magnitude exceeded the firm's January estimate of $6.2 billion.

Revenue fell 26 percent year-on-year to $47.3 billion.

Vanke partly attributed the losses to "significant decrease in the settlement scale and gross profit margin of the development business".

Company chief operating officer and executive vice president Liu Xiao resigned from his position on Monday "due to work adjustments", the firm said.

"After stepping down from these roles, (Liu) will continue to work for the Company, focusing on strategic investment business," according to the company.

Vanke has seen a shakeup of its top management, including the resignation of its CEO Zhu Jiusheng on January 27 which the company said was "due to health reasons".

That month, Chinese outlet the Economic Reporter cited sources as saying Zhu had been "taken away by public security authorities", without specifying his alleged offences.

Beijing announced support measures in November for the ailing property sector that included lowering deed tax rates for certain first and second homes in four major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

Despite the policy package, Vanke suffered net losses of $4.35 billion in the final quarter of last year.

The company said it will face a concentrated repayment of its public debts this year, "further intensifying the liquidity pressure".

Chinese authorities were mulling plans to help Vanke plug a funding gap of $6.8 billion this year, Bloomberg News reported last month.

Vanke is among several major Chinese property firms mired in a debt crisis in recent years that has left developers in severe financial distress.

Troubled property developers Kaisa and Country Garden -- both fending off winding up petitions in Hong Kong courts -- also reported losses separately.

Kaisa said on Monday that its losses for the year grew 48.4 percent to $4.03 billion in 2024.

Country Garden reported an annual loss attributable to company owners of $4.5 billion on Sunday, adding that its total debt amounted to $34.9 billion as of the end of last year.
