Chinese AI lab DeepSeek has released an open version of DeepSeek-R1, its so-called reasoning model, that it claims performs as well as OpenAI’s o1 on certain AI benchmarks.

R1 is available from the AI dev platform Hugging Face under an MIT license, meaning it can be used commercially without restrictions. According to DeepSeek, R1 beats o1 on the benchmarks AIME, MATH-500, and SWE-bench Verified. AIME employs other models to evaluate a model’s performance, while MATH-500 is a collection of word problems. SWE-bench Verified, meanwhile, focuses on programming tasks.

Abstract
Science is crucial for evidence-based decision-making. Public trust in scientists can help decision makers act on the basis of the best available evidence, especially during crises. However, in recent years the epistemic authority of science has been challenged, causing concerns about low public trust in scientists. We interrogated these concerns with a preregistered 68-country survey of 71,922 respondents and found that in most countries, most people trust scientists and agree that scientists should engage more in society and policymaking. We found variations between and within countries, which we explain with individual- and country-level variables, including political orientation. While there is no widespread lack of trust in scientists, we cannot discount the concern that lack of trust in scientists by even a small minority may affect considerations of scientific evidence in policymaking. These findings have implications for scientists and policymakers seeking to maintain and increase trust in scientists

Today's game is Minecraft 1.8.5. Me and a friend started a server to plan for a fun. It's an amplified world so it has that jacked up terrain gen. It made finding iron difficult and climbing hard, but it was a lot of fun. 1.8.5 i have fond memories of. Not nearly as many as 1.7.2 due to Xbox 360 edition, but the 1.8.5 equivalent on PS3 edition was the main one i played for a while. I remember being really excited to be able to use prismarine and dark oak for my builds.

I got this specific screenshot while mining Iron. Shortly after i found a huge ravine at Y level 46 that had nearly a stack of iron.

After this, I ended up spending like an hour building a Stair Case to get up and down the mountain i'm living on. It took a while but came out looking really good for essentially a heap of Cobblestone Stairs. It has the same vibes as the Mines of Moria from LoTR. You know in that one scene where the Stair case is falling down?

For context here's a shot from the very top of the mountain before i built the staircase, just to give you an idea of how tall it is:

Ditto:

Finally, i wanted to share this screenshot of my Ugly house i built. It does not have a roof because my friend asked if i was going to build one, and out of stubbornness i refused (i did build a pretty trim around the roof though):

This release mostly is a redesign of the instance/community/user sidebars on the right side of those pages. Things are in clear sections, each in a collapsible section that remembers if it was open. So if you're tired of seeing your instance's description every time just close it and it'll stay closed.

Instances and communities now show their full stats, and there are now pages for the legal info and linked/blocked instances. The instance sidebar also shows the list of admins.

If you use the 'Redirect' feed layout setting added in the previous release it now responds to clicks directly on the image or the background of cards.

When looking at your own profile there will be an "Edit Profile" button at the top of the sidebar.

I always wondered why the combat in Lagoon for the SNES was so bad. Had no idea it was originally a straight up clone of Ys.

All I hear about is "boomers" this, "Millennials" that, "Gen Z" that, etc.

Why no one talk about Gen X? What happened to them? They just vanished like in Infinity War? Or are we mistaken Gen Z by Boomers?

On Ukraine, it is becoming clear that Ukraine and Mr. Putin must find a way to a negotiated settlement to the war. Mr. Trump must make clear that the United States will continue to work with NATO to support Ukraine and that Mr. Putin will not be allowed to succeed. If that message is clear to Mr. Putin and if Ukraine can gain traction against Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky will have the leverage to negotiate a settlement that provides for Ukraine’s sovereignty and security, allows Russia to remain in Crimea and other limited areas and achieves an end to the war. That would be peace through strength.

Fuck this guy. "Peace through strength", suck my dick.
