Between 2013 and 2023, the city dumped 115 billion litres of sewage into its river system, according to a Narwhal and Winnipeg Free Press analysis of publicly available sewer monitoring data. That’s enough to fill nearly 46,000 Olympic swimming pools.

Reworking sewer infrastructure is expensive. The city believes it will take until 2095 — 70 years — to stop the leaks. In the meantime, it argues in documents the impact of these combined sewer overflows are relatively minimal: they’re an eyesore, they’re unpleasant, more often than not they breach water quality regulations — but the city says they have little impact on human or aquatic ecosystem health.

In a 1992 letter to the editor published in the Winnipeg Free Press, he wrote:

“Our rivers are putrid and include 10 pathogenic organisms which are responsible for the following diseases: salmonella, dysentery, ear infection, dermatitis, respiratory infections, gastroenteritis and polio.”

Since they don't technically fry... Or do they? They're basically mini electric ovens. What's the difference between an air fryer and an electric oven, other than size and energy consumption?

Radar screens at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport went black again early Friday morning.

The outage happened at 3:55 a.m. and lasted about 90 seconds, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Air traffic controllers could be heard telling a FedEx plane that their screens went dark and then asking the aircraft to tell their company to put pressure on to get the problem fixed.

On May 9, 2025, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested during an oversight visit to the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in his city. Baraka, currently running for New Jersey governor, accompanied three Democratic members of Congress. Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver to inspect the facility amid ongoing concerns about permit violations and transparency.

HSI Newark Special Agent Ricky Patel charged Baraka with trespassing for allegedly ignoring directives to leave the premises. Baraka disputes this, stating he was on the property for over an hour without receiving instructions to depart and was arrested after exiting the secure area.

The arrest has sparked significant political debate. Baraka's supporters view it as retaliation for his gubernatorial campaign and opposition to the facility's operations. Critics point to broader tensions between local and federal authorities over immigration enforcement and private detention center oversight.

After five hours in custody, Baraka was released and is scheduled for a court appearance on May 15. The incident highlights ongoing jurisdictional conflicts between municipal and federal authorities regarding oversight responsibilities and immigration enforcement protocols.

The case underscores the evolving dynamics between local elected officials and federal immigration agencies, particularly regarding access to and oversight of facilities operating within municipal boundaries.

Canada once had an 'at the time' super-modern steel industry. Stelco and Dofasco were on the leading edge of steel making tech, using the most advanced for-the-time automated systems. But they fell behind European and Asian technology, became inefficient, and essentially closed up shop. If Canada us to be competitive, we need to completely rethink how we do things. For instance, here is an example of the newest steel making technology that is carbon-friendly, and Canada needs to take a serious look at it.

This is the type of investment needed in Canada.

Two Ukrainians arrested as authorities claim operation had one eye on a possible future military incursion

Ukrainian authorities claim to have busted a Hungarian spy ring operating on its territory, alleging that Budapest was collecting sensitive military data with one eye on a possible future incursion into the west of the country.

Hungary’s foreign minister dismissed the accusations as “propaganda” and announced the expulsion of two Ukrainians described as “spies working under diplomatic cover” at the Ukrainian embassy in Budapest.

The allegations will further test already fraught relations between the two neighbouring countries. While Hungary is a member of Nato and the EU, its prime minister, Viktor Orbán, has been an outlier among European leaders, strongly critical of Kyiv and neutral towards Russia.

Does anyone else see this? Every time I wake up my Deck to continue playing no gamepad input is accepted by the game only keyboard and mouse.

Might be because I'm not running SteamOS but OpenSUSE and start the game from KDE Plasma. But maybe this is an issue on regular Steam Decks as well I can report.

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said Friday she won’t challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia in next year’s midterms, delivering relief for some Republicans who worry she’s too divisive to win.

In a lengthy post on the social media platform X, Greene disputed GOP donors and consultants who fear she would turn off the moderate Republicans and independents needed to beat Ossoff. But Greene said she doesn’t want to serve in a Senate that “doesn’t work” and that she said is dominated by lawmakers hostile to grassroots Trump supporters and unwilling to shake up the status quo.

“If I’m going to fight for a team, it will only be a team willing to lay it all on the line to save this country,” she wrote.
