On Aug. 25, The National Boarding School Healing Coalition’s (NABS) made its 14th stop on a 20-stop national tour in downtown Portland, becoming a place of remembrance and community. Children ran around the decorated banquet tables of the Hilton Embassy Suites, as elders joined together in conversation, laughter and prayer as a hand drum echoed through the second-level hallways.

“Our goal is to provide a safe space for survivors to share their story,” said NABS’ co-director Lacey Kinnart. “It’s to give them this opportunity to speak their truth and record it because a lot of times they’re sharing something for the very first time.”

Last November, NABS made a tour stop in Hilo, Hawaii, to interview Native Hawaiian attendees of boarding schools. Kinnart, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, said the language used to describe boarding schools in Hawaii is different than in the U.S. and Canada, with students referred to as “attendees” and their schools referred to as “reformatories” and “seminaries,” but the horrors remained the same.

Has anyone else watched this? I thought it was very good. I haven't really seen a TV show like that before. Usually shows in this vein make the left wing character "good but flawed" thus "centrism is the real answer", but this one just doesn't go for that cop out at all and everyone to the right of the main character is basically a monster (from a long line of monsters going back to the middle ages). Its still very much a pre-Blair labor party kind of leftism, but its still good TV and does point to the flaws of that worldview, particularly with the very end.

The way it deals with the security apparatus is also very on point and prescient.

Trump officials accused of false imprisonment and ‘unconstitutional racial profiling’ over incident in LA

The mother of a 15-year-old boy who was detained at gunpoint by federal immigration agents is seeking $1m in damages and accusing the Trump administration of false imprisonment and “unconstitutional racial profiling”.

The teenager, a US citizen with disabilities, was in a vehicle with his mother outside Arleta high school in Los Angeles on 11 August when masked immigration agents surrounded them and pulled them from the vehicle. They said the boy was a suspect in a crime, and handcuffed him for several minutes until they realized they had the wrong person, the Los Angeles Times reported.

His mother told NBC4 that the agent told her son they had confused him with someone else, but to “look at the bright side: you’re gonna have an exciting story to tell your friends when you go back to school”.

“What’s exciting about getting guns pointed at you?” she said.

The Trump administration has enacted a sweeping suspension of approvals of almost all types of visitor visas for Palestinian passport holders, according to American officials.

The new policy goes beyond the restrictions announced by U.S. officials recently on visitor visas for Palestinians from Gaza. Last week, the State Department also said it would not issue visas to Palestinian officials to attend the annual U.N. General Assembly in New York next month.

I became vaguely aware of this... fashion trend? a few years ago on reddit. And it seems there is now at least one Lemmy community devoted to it.

So genuine question - is all streetwear just an elaborate joke, like when that guy put a urinal in an art museum to make a point about the nature of art? Because it seems like the unifying theme in streetwear is that it all looks like it is intentionally bad. Like the designer saw all the ways normal people dressed themselves poorly, and emphasized those traits. If I saw someone walking down the street in clothes I normally see posted on /c/streetwear, I would wonder what kind of bet they lost.

Do I just not "get" art? Am I now just one of the olds? What is going on here?

South peak has an observation tower open to public, and an active hummingbird feeder.

An Eastern Painted Turtle on a log, ripples from something that had splashed just before in the water behind it.

I believe this is looking west from the view tower, but I'm not sure what that mountain is.

Welcome to the 8th Annual K-ON Rewatch, everyone! It is my absolute pleasure to be bringing this annual tradition back. Just as in the 2022 rewatch, we will be featuring an "Activities Corner" each day that will feature (hopefully) fun ways for everyone to interact with the rewatch and help spark discussion. If they sound fun, feel free to dive in! The three types will be:

1. Song(s) of the Day. Most days, I will offer one or more insert and/or image song from K-ON through a Youtube link and translated lyrics. There is so much outstanding music that came out of this series, and I'd love to spread my love for it as far as possible. I'd also love to hear what you think of these songs.
2. Question(s) of the Day. I will also offer one or more questions for each episode. These may be discussion points for the episode, ways to encourage people to relate to the episode, or they might be directed towards the song(s) of the day.
3. Visuals of the Day. Each day, you are encouraged to include in your post a screenshot that you would like to be compiled into a "Visuals of the Day" album for the following day. You're welcome (but are by no means expected) to elaborate on why you picked that particular screenshot as well.

So without further ado, let's get into the activities for this first episode!

Song of the Day

Tsubasa wo Kudasai - While most days we will be covering two songs, I figured I'd start everyone off nice and easy today with just one, and this is a fun intro to the whole group!

At the end of the episode, Mio, Ritsu, and Mugi perform one of two simple songs for Yui depending on which version you're watching. In the sub version, you hear the popular Japanese folk song "Tsubasa wo Kudasai", and in the dub you hear Elvis Presley's Love Me Tender.

Well, they also released an expanded rock version of "Tsubasa wo Kudasai". It (sadly) never appears in the show, but I absolutely adore it. All four characters get their moments to sing, and the message of the song ties in quite beautifully with the show. I'd love to hear what you think of it.
