I use Fennec F-Droid (This does apply to normal ff mobile). When I hold the space key of the onscreen keyboard to control the cursor in a website's input field it doesn't move character by character but word by word. Is there a flag in about:config that changes it to go character by character instead? Their implementation is buggy and painful for me and the sole reason for why I feel forced to use Brave 😭 pls help

The German government on Wednesday slashed its growth forecasts for 2025 as industry leaders sent dire warnings over the country's economic health and staged nationwide protests to urge reforms.

Output by Europe's largest economy was now expected to increase by just 0.3 percent this year, the economy ministry said.

The figure was significantly lower than the government's previous estimate of 1.1 percent growth made in October last year.

"Germany is stuck in stagnation," Economy Minister Robert Habeck told a press conference in Berlin. Another 12 months of near-zero growth would follow two straight years in which the economy has been in recession.

The downward revision could be traced back to domestic political instability, Habeck said, with Germany headed for an early election on February 23 after the collapse of the government last year.

The return of Donald Trump to the White House and his threat to levy tariffs on key trading partners is also a risk for Germany's export-oriented economy, Habeck said.

Amid the bad economic news, Germany's leading industry associations organised demonstrations in several cities across the country to send a "distress signal" to officials.

A few hundred noisy protestors gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate in the centre of Berlin's government district.

"When will there be real growth again?" read one sign held by protestors, who blew whistles and sounded horns in front of the monument.

The cut to this year's forecasts was "mainly due" to the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government in November, the ministry's report said.

The disintegration of the coalition between Scholz's Social Democrats, the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) meant that a planned economic stimulus programme could not be fully implemented.

The whole package would have boosted growth in 2025 by 0.5 percentage points, Habeck said.

The lack of clarity over the shape of the next government and the country's economic policy were discouraging investments and "delaying the recovery", he said.

The minister, who is leading the Greens into the election, also made an appeal to Trump to avoid the planned tariff increases.

"This is a danger for an export nation like Germany, but it is also to the overall detriment of the people in both economies," Habeck said.

At the same time, it is increasingly clear that Germany has "structural problems", Habeck said, pointing to a shortage of skilled workers and excessive bureaucracy.

Likewise, Germany was "systematically underinvesting in relation to its GDP", he said.

The government's fiscal policy over the past three years of Scholz's coalition with Habeck as minister had had a "braking effect" on the economy, he said.

Asked whether Germany's economic struggles were feeding support for political extremes, Habeck said that failure to match economic success in autocracies means "the attraction of these political models will probably become ever stronger".

"If we want to keep our constitution and democracy... then we must overcome this weakness in growth," he said.

At the industry protest by the Brandenburg Gate, real estate business owner Urs Moeller pinned the blame on Habeck for the economic situation.

"The issue of costs and bureaucracy is increasingly suffocating us," Moeller told AFP.

The industry associations behind the protests said it was "time to act" after years of warning about the issues facing business.

The election of Trump was a "turning point" and a challenge to Europe where businesses needed to be more competitive, the heads of the BDA, BDI, DIHK and ZDH groups said in a joint statement.

Economic issues needed to be "at the top of the agenda of the next federal government", they said, calling for cuts to red tape and taxes as well as affordable energy prices and more skilled labour.

"Short-term crisis management will not help Germany... We need fundamental structural changes in economic and social policy," they said.

I want to share a deeply concerning story that highlights the critical importance of online privacy, especially for activists and those who speak out against authority. The death of John Lang, a well-known figure in the Fresno activist community, raises serious questions about surveillance, privacy, and the potential consequences of being targeted by law enforcement.

John was found stabbed inside a burning home, and what’s particularly alarming is that just days before his death, he expressed fears that Fresno law enforcement was stalking him and might end his life. He had been vocal about his experiences with police harassment, including a disturbing pattern of unethical practices by Fresno law enforcement, such as scanning license plates in retail parking lots to generate revenue.

In his efforts to protest these injustices, John posted his thoughts on the Fresno Bee, believing he was doing so anonymously. However, it later came to light that an employee at the Fresno Bee was sharing identifiable information (IP addresses) with law enforcement, leading to John being targeted. This tragic situation serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities we face when we do not take proper precautions to protect our online privacy.

John’s case illustrates the dangers of not using tools like VPNs or Tor for online activism. Had he utilized these privacy measures, he might have been able to shield his identity from those who sought to silence him.

This tragic story serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of online exposure for activists. We must learn from John’s experience and recognize the importance of safeguarding our privacy in an increasingly surveilled world.

start of the article:

Satellite imagery has been used extensively in open-source investigative research: from monitoring global deforestation to documenting mass demolitions in Gaza.

When we view satellite images on platforms like Google Earth, the world looks very similar to how it does with the naked eye – for example, if you were looking down at the earth from an aeroplane window.

However, satellite images can also reveal things that humans can’t see. A common example of this kind of imaging is night vision, which uses infrared light to illuminate a scene that’s not visible to the naked eye. In satellite imaging, images made using additional types of light are known as multispectral images.

Multispectral satellite images can reveal useful information about the world, such as the presence and quality of water, types of vegetation, soil health and more. In this guide, we will explain the basics of how multispectral satellite imaging works, apply it to case studies relating to mining and deforestation, and review open-source tools and resources for using these techniques in practice.

Israeli strikes wounded 24 people in south Lebanon Tuesday despite a ceasefire in force for more than six weeks, the Lebanese health ministry said.

The first strike hit the southern town of Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa, wounding 20 people, the ministry said, updating a previous toll of 14 injured.

It added that another strike on the neighbouring town of Zawtar wounded four people.

At around 7:30 pm, an Israeli drone carried out "a strike with a guided missile targeting a small vegetable truck" in Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The town lies north of the Litani River but only around 10 kilometres (seven miles) from the Israeli border.

NNA later reported a second strike "less than two kilometres (a little over a mile) away from the first strike" on the Zawtar-Nabatiyeh road.

Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the strikes, calling them "another violation of Lebanese sovereignty and a blatant breach of the ceasefire arrangement," according to a statement from his office.

He added that he had contacted the head of the ceasefire monitoring committee, US Major General Jasper Jeffers, and urged him "to take a firm stance to ensure Israel complies with its obligations under international law".

Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee confirmed the strikes, saying they targeted Hezbollah vehicles transferring weapons in south Lebanon.

Hey, I'm an American moving to NZ (Whangerei, Northland) in a few months and am trying to device if I should fly my desktop/server over or just build a new one there.

What's the general availability of server and desktop parts there? Any recommended local shops, or do I need to import everything from Asia?

Admittedly anecdotal but I recall when my brother went on a school trip to Japan, him and his school mates were expected to do an embarrassing dance number akin to the Haruhi Suzumiya dance for the students of a Japanese school; I also recall folks who went to teach English in Japanese schools who were merely hired as aides to repeat what the teacher was saying but in a goofy manner. I was like "What a racist cult- oh wait we do that too".

I remembered Ken Jeong and hearing him speak in an interview and was shocked he didn't have that accent he puts on in his movies. I then remembered some Asian Americans who said you have to sell out deeply to be accepted in America, and if you say one thing that can be interpreted as pro-China (even calling out Japanese war crimes against China), you lose everything. We like our non-white Americans to be stereotypes and we get scared when we can't otherize them; we're also quick to distrust them.
