Many cultures have decades of pop-culture anti-nazi media. What are some of your favorite video games, movies, music, tv shows, books, and other media that are anti-nazi?

inglorious bastards, disco elysium

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

I don't know much about Disco Elysium. How is it anti-nazi? Isn't it a space game?

Edit: I was thinking of a different game

[–] TechieDamien@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

It is not a space game. It is a detective game were the narrative comes from your inner voices. Highly recommend, especially if you are looking for some political commentary!

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

its antinazi in a very subtle way. its a story game loosely inspired by post-soviet life in rural russia/the balkans, but in an alternate universe with motor carriages, cryptids and and The Fog.

you investigate some weird crime involving commies, the local labor union and some fascists. its actually excellent worldbuilding.

Hard to beat the Wolfenstein games and the Indiana Jones movies.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

Straight up, Wolf3D and Fate of Atlantis gang stand up

Indy is all about showing us how to properly handle Nazis.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Those were two of the first ones I thought of too. I love The Last Crusade.

Inglourious Basterds is pretty good

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

I can't say enough good things about the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare:

https://youtu.be/zvwDen1Wrx8

Mind blowing aspects:

  1. It's a true story.

  2. Ian Fleming was there for it and used it as the inspiration for James Bond.

  3. In the two real missions dramatized for the film, nobody got killed, but where's the fun in that?

Jojo Rabbit. Telling a story from the perspective of a child who has only known propaganda for his whole life makes the film an important reminder of how this all happened, how real human beings can end up going along with horrible things.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

Plus, getting to see Taika Watiti(sp?) play Hitler as an imaginary best friend is a real treat. This is a great movie, although it's still a dark comedy and likes to remind you, suddenly at times, of the dark realities of that war.

I wanna say The Producers. So many works trying to demonise Nazis falls into the trap that demons are kinda cool, but Springtime for Hitler is so ridiculous that no matter how pro-Nazi the lyrics are, you can only laugh at them. And watching Hitler throw it back is just peak theatre.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 15 points 1 week ago

And remember: They were trying to make a flop by making it about Hitler, yet it became a hit. In a way, it kind of parallels reality.

I'm partial to Nazi Punks, Fuck Off, originally by the Dead Kennedys. Napalm Death does a great version, too, if you're more into grindcore

Downfall.

Anti-Nazi is not supposed to be funny, not in today's politics. Seeing Nazism for what it is and how Nazis saw themselves is best IMO.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Not exactly Nazis (in a strict aesthetic point of view; ideologically no different), but I've been having fun seeking out Klansmen in RDR2 and disrupting their gatherings.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That was one thing I always did too! Been thinking about replaying that one. The violence in that game was a bit hard for me to deal with in a lot of cases, but I never had any personal conflicts deciding how to deal with klansmen.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't like Micah or Strauss, personally. Most of the other fights you have in the game are against racists, rapists or criminal underlords. But those two have missions where you're killing or beating up regular townspeople because Micah is a psychopath and Strauss is a heartless loan shark. I've yet to finish the story mode, but I've been wanting to put a bullet in Micah since I had to break him out of jail in Strawberry. Already kicked Strauss out of camp and that felt really good.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I seriously sat there in Strawberry thinking "I can't believe I'm breaking this guy out. I'd rather just let him die." I think I restarted that mission several times looking for an alternate story.

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 6 points 1 week ago

Also, that racist in Blackwater. Tying him up, dragging him behind you on your horse to the police station, and just killing him there. Over and over again.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

During all this Elon Musk BS I suddenly wanted to watch Kung Fury.

[–] sapphiria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not as direct, but Star Wars Andor has this kind of energy to it.

[–] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 5 points 1 week ago

Star Wars always has been anti-nazi, especially movies 4-6. It got quite a bit diluted into “bad yoga teacher womp”, but still.

[–] kandykarter@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Y'all need to see the OG anti-nazi movie, Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator, which he made in 1939.

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Now do you mean the actual original, or do you mean Wolfenstein 3D?

Call me basic, but Captain America has been beating up Nazis for a long time.

Propagandhi - The Only Good Fascist Is a Very Dead Fascist. Especially the line "You can wear my nuts on Your nazi chin".

The Saboteur. A somewhat forgotten but excellent game from the PS3/X360 era, still available on Steam I think.

You play an Irishman in Paris punching nazis and blowing up their shit. The world is black & white and becomes colorful as you capture things.

The racing part sucks, but otherwise the concept and style was just a ton of fun. It had memorable and unique sights and sounds and was just overall a satisfying play.

[–] Kayday@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Probably not what you had in mind, but Eat the Reich is a ttrpg in which you, a vampire commando, infiltrate occupied Paris to drink all of Adolf Hitler’s blood.

Porco Rosso is an excellent Ghibli film with anti-fascist themes.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A great movie called "Look who's back" goes into the danger of letting Nazism flourish. In this world Hitler shoots himself at the end of ww2 and then magicaly wakes up in modern times. So he goes back to his old shenanigans and people think it's satire.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 days ago

I didn’t realize while watching it that it’s kinda shot Borat-style and some of the reactions from people are genuine.

Not sure if this counts, but:

The TV series The Man in the High Castle depicts an alt-universe where the nazi won WW2 (and obviously nazis are the antagonists). It isn't historically plausiable (just like most works of fiction), but it is interesting to see just how fucked up that world looks like.

Also if you don't feel like paying for a subscription and funding big corporate media in this political climate, you can visit the community !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com for alternative 😉 sources of obtaining content 🏴‍☠️ (community is blocked by lemmy.world instance)

Iron Sky is ridiculous and good for a laugh if you need a break from the real Nazis.

[–] kubok@fedia.io 8 points 1 week ago

The Babylon 5 subplot about president Clarke and his regime comes to mind. The scene with the woman of the Ministry of Truth visits Babylon 5 and claims to have sollved problems by rewriting the dictionary does rhyme with certain events in my country.

I'm an Australian, but I have watched 'don't be a sucker' so many times.

Such solid GOOD propaganda. Easy to find for those who have not seen it

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I hereby define the Bren Gun as a type of media. Traditionally very anti-nazi.

Not explicitly Nazi, but good enough. There was an episode of Sliders where there's a world where those with immigrant blood or who don't fit a certain type of white if I remember correctly get taken away to prison camps essentially. The twist is that they are essentially turned into slaves through some surgery. Also, apparently there was no Hitler on that parallel Earth. A single person (can't remember if he was alone or with a group/party) was responsible for it all to be allowed.

The idea of those deemed impure/undesirable in society being medically turned into slaves probably sounded like nothing but sci-fi back then but now under the current US president, it doesn't sound too far fetched (aside from what they were turned into of course).
