This always annoys me. I land on a site that's in a language I don't understand (say, Dutch), and I want to switch to something else. I open the language selector and... it's all in Dutch too. So instead of Germany/Deutchland, Romania/România, Great Britain, etc, I get Duitsland and Roemenië and Groot-Brittannië...

How does that make any sense? If I don't speak the language, how am I supposed to know what Roemenië even is? In some situations, it could be easier to figure it out, but in some, not so much. "German" in Polish is "Niemiecki"... :|

Wouldn't it be way more user-friendly to show the names in their native language, like Deutsch, Română, English, Polski, etc?

Is there a reason this is still a thing, or is it just bad UX that nobody bothers to fix?

Mine is using the arrow keys to navigate typed text while writing and editing. It helps speed things up, versus having to move your hand to the mouse to navigate.

Use the Up and Down Arrows to move/jump vertically.

Left and Right Arrows to move/jump horizontally.

Combine Left or Right Arrow with Shift to be able to select text. Use Up or Down Arrow with Shift to quickly select whole/nearly whole sections of text.

Combine Control with Left/Right Arrow to jump whole words to more quickly move to where you want to type.

I understand the historical significance since the nationalists retreated to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese Civil War.

Back then, and for perhaps the middle part of the 20th century, there was a threat of a government in exile claiming mainland China. Historically, then, there was your impetus for invasion.

However, China has since grown significantly, and Taiwan no longer claims to be the government of mainland China, so that reason goes away.

Another reason people give: control the supply of chips. Yet, wouldn’t the Fabs, given their sensitive nature, be likely to be significantly destroyed in the process of an invasion?

Even still, China now has its own academia and engineering, and is larger than Taiwan. Hence, even without the corporate espionage mainland China is known for, wouldn’t investing in their burgeoning semiconductor industry make more sense, rather than spending that money on war?

People mention that taking Taiwan would be a breakout from the “containment” imposed by the ring of U.S. allies in the region.

Yet while taking Taiwan would mean access to deep-water ports, it’s not as though Taiwan would ever pose a threat to Chinese power projection—their stance is wholly defensive. If China decided to pull an “America” and send a carrier to the Middle East or something, no one would stop them and risk a war.

So what is it then? Is it just for national pride and glory? Is it to create a legacy for their leadership? The gamble just doesn’t really seem worth it.

Anyway, appreciate your opinions thanks!

An Anti Hero is basically a good guy who is kinda bad, or does good things for bad reasons. Deadpool's a classic example of an Anti Hero

I kinda wanna see an alt-history TV show where every technology gets developed but then technology stagnates around the internet era and the internet (in the current form) never gets developed.

What do you think of this type of society?

I think a sort of like text packet-radio of public chatrooms would be so cool as an alternative to the current "internet". Like a meshtastic sort of thing, and Libraries would have info on how to build them, and some stores will sell them.

So basically like a internet-but-not-really-internet sort of "internet", and there would be range limited, and you have the option to not pass on messages you deem hateful. And no corporation will control it, no central servers. Less trolling.

Am I making any sense?

TNO = trans neptunian object, basically far out dwarf planet

Obviously there would be less sun to greenhouse, but theoretically could that be a way to have closer-to-earth habitats far away from a star?

edit: the TNO does not have to be like Pluto, it can be bigger or have different conditions

i've noticed that a lot of the content on my lemmy feed seems to be centered around lgbtq+ topics, which I'm not really interested in. i'm not looking to debate or criticize anyone's identity, but I'd like to see a broader range of topics that align more with my preferences. i'm already subscribed to those instances but somehow that sort of content keeps on creeping in.

is lemmy as a platform particularly focused on lgbtq+ or is my feed just skewed for some reason?

are there specific instances or settings I should check out to balance things out. thanks for any advice!
