I am reading GNOME design guidelines and GNOME keyboard shortcuts page, and both say that you press Ctrl+V to paste content previously copied.

However, whenever I do this in GNOME Terminal it does not exactly paste the copied text - it adds something at the beginning that was not there in the original. I had this when copied some commands to fine tune Fedora after installation by copying commands listed in Fedora Quick Docs into the Terminal. Only when I used Ctrl+Shift+V text was copied correctly.

Why is that? Why does Ctrl+V work everywhere but the Terminal?

There are still some people who haven't realized just how fast and vast the global switch to renewables is. If you're one of them, this statistic should put it in perspective. China installed 93 GW of solar capacity in May 2025. Put another way, that's about 30 nuclear power stations worth of electricity capacity. All this cheap renewable energy will power China's industrial might in AI & robotics too. Meanwhile western countries look increasingly dazed, confused, and out of date.

China breaks more records with surge in solar and wind power

U.S. Department of Defense announced Tuesday it would no longer process and deliver data essential to most hurricane forecasts

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced it would immediately stop ingesting, processing, and transmitting data essential to most hurricane forecasts.

The announcement was formalized on Tuesday when NOAA distributed a service change notice to all users, including the National Hurricane Center, that by next Monday, June 30th, they would no longer receive real-time microwave data collected aboard three weather satellites jointly run by NOAA and the U.S. Department of Defense.

The permanent discontinuation of data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) will severely impede and degrade hurricane forecasts for this season and beyond, affecting tens of millions of Americans who live along its hurricane-prone shorelines.

The news on Tuesday sent users across the weather and climate community – including those monitoring changes to sea ice extent in the polar regions – scrambling to understand the rationale behind the abrupt termination. Though not immediately clear why the real-time data was suddenly discontinued, the decision appears to have stemmed from Department of Defense security concerns.

Officials at the National Hurricane Center were also caught off guard by the announcement and are preparing their team for the loss of critical forecast data for the rest of the hurricane season.

Denmark is taking steps toward enacting a ban on the use of “deepfake” imagery online, saying such digital manipulations can stir doubts about reality and foster misinformation.

The government said in a statement published Thursday that a “broad cross section” of parties in parliament support greater protections against deepfakes and a planned bill is expected to make it illegal to share them or other digital imitations of personal characteristics.

Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt, in a statement, said that it was “high time that we now create a safeguard against the spread of misinformation and at the same time send a clear signal to the tech giants.”

Officials said Friday that the measures are believed to be among the most extensive steps yet taken by a government to combat misinformation through deepfakes, which refers to highly realistic but fabricated content created by artificial intelligence tools.

Earlier this month, the Nintendo Switch 2 launched alongside the new game Mario Kart World. The release was controversial due to the price of both the console and the game. As a journalist I felt it was my duty to review both as this means the purchase is a work expense that I can claim on my taxes (oh and the new Pro Controller too).

If I had to describe the Nintendo Switch 2 in one sentence it would be that it’s like a Nintendo Switch but better and newer.

The old games run better, the new game runs great, and the click of the controllers when you attach them to the console feels good to my dumb brain.

It’s good that the console feels nice to use since it is $700, which (although comparable to other modern gaming consoles) is a fuck tonne of money. These days that’s like 2 weeks of rent for a closet in Sydney, or half the ingredients for a salad at the major supermarkets.

Now that I have gotten that part out of the way in case the ATO checks this article, it’s time to talk about one of the most expensive games in history: Mario Kart World.

For background information, I am writing this review after sinking over 35 hours into the game. Which may sound like a lot but as a journalist I didn’t want to rush with some half thought out clickbait, I wanted to get real knowledge of the game and also since this is research for work, those hours are billable.

A developer built a real-world ad blocker for Snap Spectacles, though the limited opacity and field of view make it squarely a proof of concept.

Japan is an important market for Google. According to data from StatCounter, Google currently ranks second with a market share of 5.81%, far behind the Apple iPhone with a gigantic 62.46%, but just ahead of Samsung and Xiaomi. However, smartphones from the Pixel 7 series have been banned from retail sales there due to a patent dispute with South Korean mobile phone company Pantech.

As MLex reports, a district court in Tokyo has ruled that Google has infringed a standards essential patent relating to the LTE modem in Pixel smartphones. Such patents are required for manufacturing products, which is why they must be licensed under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory conditions. According to Pantech, Google has been using the exact method described in the patent to handle communication between Pixel smartphones and cell towers, but did not license the patent.

The court stressed that preliminary injunctions for standard essential patents (SEP) are only possible if the defendant has not attempted to obtain a license for the respective patent. Google had delayed negotiations and insisted on conditions such as a confidentiality clause, which Pantech argued was completely unnecessary. Google also refused to propose a "reasonable" royalty rate during the proceedings, claiming that calculating it would be "too complex".

After Google refused to provide the court with data on the sales figures of Pixel smartphones in Japan, the sales ban on the Pixel 7 series was imposed. Pantech has already filed a lawsuit to halt sales of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 as well as the corresponding Pro models. If Google is unable to reach an agreement with Pantech, the company may be forced to withdraw from the Japanese market
