A Scottish tourist who suffered severe burns in a suspected gas explosion at a building in Rome has died of his injuries.

Grant Paterson, 54, was admitted to hospital on 23 March after the explosion and subsequent collapse of the block of flats where he was staying, in the Monteverde district.

The explosion, which is still under investigation, occurred on the final day of Paterson’s visit to the Italian capital. He was pulled out from beneath the rubble and taken to Rome’s Saint’Eugenio, where he underwent several operations for burns to about 75% of his body.

Doctors said a few days ago that Paterson, from East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, was not conscious and his breathing was being “mechanically assisted”. His death was announced on Tuesday.

I think you know the simulation hypothesis. Our universe could be a simulation created by... well, let's call them "gods".

But, if the simulation continue, we, humans, may reach the point where we could create a simulation of our own universe. In which, the simulated people would reach the point where they simulate their universe, etc...

So, as a corollary, it is not possible to simulate the entire universe, because this imply simulating an infinity of entire universe. It is only possible to simulate a simpler, smaller universe at each "layer".

So my question, are we at the top of the stack, or at the bottom ? Which would imply a much bigger and much more complexe universe above us.

I had no free buckets to hold the derusting solution in that the vise would fit comfortably, so I had to use a plastic box that was too wide. It would not submerge fully in the 1 Liter of derusting solution I bought, I had to soak one side for 24 hours and then the other side for 24 hours. It mostly cleared the rust. I'm considering painting it now, but I don't think I'm going to.

The bodies of the three other soldiers were recovered Monday after U.S., Polish and Lithuanian armed forces and authorities dug the M88 Hercules vehicle out of a peat bog at the expansive Gen. Silvestras Žukauskas training ground in the town of Pabradė.

The Army released the identities of the three soldiers recovered Monday, but the fourth soldier’s name has not been made public as family notifications continue. They were Sgt. Jose Duenez Jr., 25, of Joliet, Illinois; Sgt. Edvin F. Franco, 25, of Glendale, California; and Pfc. Dante D. Taitano, 21, of Dededo, Guam.

“This past week has been devastating. Today our hearts bear the weight of an unbearable pain with the loss of our final Dogface Soldier,” Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, 3rd Infantry Division commander, said in a statement Tuesday. “Though we have received some closure, the world is darker without them.”

(The) paper, published Thursday in the journal Science, finds that global warming has notably reduced the amount of water that’s being stored around the world in soil, lakes, rivers, snow and other places, with potentially irreversible impacts on agriculture and sea level rise. The researchers say the significant shift of water from land to the ocean is particularly worrisome for farming, and hope their work will strengthen efforts to reduce water overuse.

Earth’s soil moisture dropped by over 2,000 gigatons in roughly the last 20 years, the study says. For context, that’s more than twice Greenland’s ice loss from 2002 to 2006, the researchers noted. Meanwhile, the frequency of once-in-a-decade agricultural and ecological droughts has increased, global sea levels have risen and the Earth’s pole has shifted.

The study also confirms an explanation for a slight wobble in the rotation of the Earth — it’s being driven by the changing moisture levels of the planet.

Hey, #mstdnca folks, some news to share.

We're in our 4th birthday month!

As many know, we've been working toward non-profit status. Despite hurdles, we've been fighting to get there.

This morning, I'm excited to announce that I've accepted Rogers Media's purchase offer to acquire the instance.

I'm excited to see where we go from here and hope all are excited too!

UPDATE: April Fools!! 🤪

Roberts is president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. He is widely considered the mastermind of Project 2025, a 900-page plan that pushes for firing federal employees, placing limits on the National Institutes of Health and cracking down on immigration. He made headlines last year for bragging about killing a dog with a shovel.

Thought I'd share a minor one that I was the victim of. At the time I was working in the second hand goods trade. When people bought items from us valued over a certain amount, the system would require us to take down the name and address of people, though it didn't have to be formal presentation of ID. Some people really didn't like it when we asked for their details, even if I told them that they could just make it up due to the informal nature of it.

An older gentleman, who I'll call Bob, came in and wanted to buy a couple of coins. Individually they were under the amount but together they exceeded it, so I asked for his details.

Bob: What do you need my name for? Me: Store policy. Transactions over a certain amount require me to take your name and address as we're a second hand dealer. Bob: What's the amount? Me: tells him Bob: So I'll just buy them individually them.

I wasn't about to try and start an argument about it, so I just proceeded with the individual transactions. A little annoying, yes, but he was technically correct.

From Conservative of SW Florida

Two great horned owlets were recently admitted to our wildlife hospital. The rescuer found one of the owlets near his back door/lanai. He knew that there were great horned owls in the area, but not exactly where the baby's nest would be. The rescuer brought the baby to our wildlife staff and our veterinarian checked for injuries.

Our staff told him to keep an eye out for any activity such as parents or other siblings. The following day, he found the nest with the second sibling in it. Their parents had made a nest in a dead palm.

We sent one of our volunteers out to check the area and trees. When our volunteer arrived, she noticed that the second owlet had fallen as well. Once both babies were medically cleared, we were able to renest. A local tree company helped us put up a new nest. After the successful renesting their mother was seen back in the nest with her babies the next day.

Insane headline. I would've liked to see what a SOMA show would look like.

I’d always heard about Your Lie in April and always thought to myself it can’t be THAT bad. So I started it up yesterday and I am on my couch bawling my fucking eyes out on EPISODE TEN. This anime is going to scar me for the rest of my life isn’t it?

On April 4, 2008 (a Fri.), an anime called "The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk" became the first legal anime simulcast. One of the sites it premiered on was Crunchyroll back when CR was a pirated anime-hosting site. Happy b-day!

So older anime can be subjective, but for the sake of this argument lets sayyyyyyyy 20 years or older? So any anime from 2005 or older.

I'll start. Saikano: The Ultimate Weapon as I heard it was a classic tragic love story between 2 star crossed lovers and it was ever so so so sad and tragic and your tears would flow like waterfalls etc. It ended up being a 1.5 out of 5 for me. It was just so so so boring. Like you could cut out episode 2-10 and only watch 1 and 11-13 and that would be enough to understand the story. The other weird thing was that everybody is cheating on everybody and yet nobody seems like it and yet they still do it...

What is your classic anime you wanted to like so badly, only to end up disappointed for X reason?
