We have a reprieve.

  • CDC data shows 70 bird flu cases were reported in the U.S., but there are no known person-to-person exposures in the U.S. right now, eliminating the need for the virus' emergency declaration.
  • The agency will continue to monitor the situation and report data on the number of people monitored and tested for bird flu monthly.
  • Detections in animals will no longer be reported on the CDC's website, but can be found on the USDA's website.

He refused to leave home without it and the army was like "oh well, what are you gonna do?"

Mise en place. If you're not familiar, it's a practice in cooking to have everything you will need set up and ready before you begin. You can do it with other kinds of tasks, too. I find it way easier to prep for tasks than to just do them. And prepping makes it mentally easier to just transition into doing.

That's exactly what happened to me.

Per the article, they're still not certain if it's the added nitrites in the meat that are the problem, but if you're looking to avoid them, I know Aldi sells nitrite-free hot dogs and bacon.

You have no news, just like everyone else.

Every time I see it spelled that way, I die a little.

Dr Seuss was here.

I didn't understand that's what you meant.

First time having a turtle on my porch.

Other side:

I was reading about Mel Gibson's anti-semitic rants, and his apology about being drunk* when I remembered this meme. I agree with the meme, that our brains tend to feed us what we've heard from our environment, but our conscious mind overrides that with our processed thoughts.

People use "he didn't mean it, he was drunk/high" as an excuse for racist/misogynist/whateverist comments. The response is typically "you don't become racist when drunk, you just drop your inhibitions and reveal who you are."

But if you agree with the First Thought meme, what if being impaired isn't revealing what you really think, but is preventing you from thinking at all, and just getting stuck on your conditioned response?

*Gibson is just an example. This post is not about litigating whether he personally is racist, but about this sort of behavior in general.

Action item at the end:

“Avoid plastics as much as you can. Reducing your use of ultraprocessed foods can reduce the levels of the chemical exposures you come in contact with,” Trasande said. “Never put plastic containers in the microwave or dishwasher, where the heat can break down the linings so they might be absorbed more readily.”

Here are other tips to reduce exposure:

· Use unscented lotions and laundry detergents.

· Use cleaning supplies without scents.

· Use glass, stainless steel, ceramic or wood to hold and store foods.

· Buy fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables instead of canned and processed versions.

· Encourage frequent handwashing to remove chemicals from hands.

· Avoid air fresheners and all plastics labeled as No. 3, No. 6 and No. 7.

Mom's going to be out of town for three weeks, so I'm on my own. I ought to keep it simple, but I also wouldnt mind treating myself. If you were in my place, what would you cook?

Visited a booth at my farmer's market where the mom working was wearing her baby in a sling on her back. This kid's neck was as far back as it could go. We mentioned it to the mom, and she just said "yeah, her head's been bobbing around all morning."

I don't know the baby's age. And I don't know much about babies. Based on the first time I saw her, she's at least seven months old. I know that newborns' necks need to be supported. And I know that having your neck in that position can cause a stroke in adults.

It made my mom so uncomfortable she had to walk away, but the people behind us talked to the woman and said nothing about it. Should this be reported to someone? Or is it totally normal and fine?

Appeal factors are the characteristics that engage the reader and include the book’s pacing, the level of character development, the types and complexity of language used, the mood of the story, and the book’s overall tone.

I'm excited to try out some of the tools they link to. Right away I see so many new-to-me interesting titles on whichbook.

I enjoyed participating in inktober, and seeing what everyone else made. I want to keep using prompts, but in a broader way than ink52.

We'll begin the first week of January. For now, if you visit the community, I'm soliciting ideas for prompts. That can include a subject, but it can also be a technique, medium, color, or any other kind of inspiration. All types of visual art are welcome. Hope to see you there.

Ink and gouache on paper.

Based on the Reddit challenge of the same name. Every week there's a new prompt to challenge yourself and bake something new. Share your creations, talk about what worked and what didn't, and see what others are baking. We would love to have more bakers!
