Researchers suggest ‘sex-specific strategies’ after analysis of cardiovascular health improvements

Men may need to exercise twice as much as women to achieve the same reduction in coronary heart disease risk, according to researchers, who say healthy living guidelines should take account of the sex differences.

Scientists analysed physical activity records from more than 80,000 people and found that the risk of heart disease fell 30% in women who clocked up 250 minutes of exercise each week. In contrast, men needed to reach 530 minutes, or nearly nine hours, a week to see the same effect.

The study builds on previous work that suggests women benefit more than men from the same amount of exercise, but that women are generally less physically active and less likely to meet recommended exercise targets.

If you just do cocaine three times a week it will embiggen your blood stuff and you don't need to ever exercise

That's 9 out of 168 hours that you have in each week. About 5% of your time.

“Available”

Just because I’m literally existing doesn’t mean that time is available.

"available"

I didn't use the word available? Who are you quoting??

If your existence doesn't allow for you to have time to move your body, than maybe you should reevaluate how you are existing. How many hours of tv and movies do you watch and how many hours of video games do you play every week?

You’re not going to convince lazy people to get up and move so don’t bother. It’s not worth the headache to argue with them about something that’s good for them.

Good attempt, but I can't exercise in my sleep or at work, so it's closer to 16%. Subtract all the other necessities eating up free time like cooking, commuting, hygiene and household chores and it isn't such a minuscule amount.

You get the time back at the end of your life.

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In a way, you do, because you would be likely to live longer and be healthier for more of your life.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You absolutely do. You get to enjoy better quality of life for longer.

9 out of 168 hours is always about 5%. Having other obligations doesn't mean that math changes. I didn't say it's 5% of your free time.

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm sorry, do you think I don't know basic fucking math? I'm saying your parameters are bullshit.

Sleep is an "obligation" and not a necessity? Are you a robot?

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Uh no, I didn't say that sleep is an obligation. Seriously never said anything like that. You don't seem to be having much luck reading what I wrote.

I said something, you replied taking what I said out of context, I repeated what I said, you've now taken it further out of context. Please notice that I didn't make the statement that you are defending against.

The recommended amount of exercise 5% of your total time. Sleep should be about 30% of your total time.

One hour a day walking or biking to/from work, that's 5 hours done. One hour working in the yard on the weekend, and half an hour a day of capital E exercise, lifting weights or bodyweight exercises.

If you don't prioritize exercise, and sex too, work will eat your day. Set that half hour or hour as inviolable, and let everything else bend around it. This strategy has worked for me through 30 years, 4 kids and a demanding job. Sometimes that is a half hour run at 530am, but usually it's not that crazy. 7pm is now the exercise hour, after work and before making supper.

So, women benefit more than men from the same amount but are less likely to meet recommendations. Are they controlling for history -- ie. An unfit person (like women who are less likely to meet recommended targets) doing a little bit of exercise may see more benefit from exercise makes sense, but it sounds like they have accounted for that still and it's related to gender.

The easiest way to avoid heart disease is not to eat it in the first place.
