He's following the Trueanon rules. You gotta pay your guys. If you stop paying them, they are no longer your guys.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 34 points 6 days ago

I love our troops. Nobody loves our troops more than Trump. My guys are my guys. They're my guys! So - you gotta pay your guys. You gotta. If you don't pay your guys - they're no longer your guys. Bad. Very, very bad. Some people read books or a lotta books. Why? Podcasts are better. Get a lot fast. Trueanon - my favorite podcast. Not my guys. No. But maybe - could be - a tiny little my guys?

Democrats when a republican uses the power of the most powerful position on earth to do things:

surprised-pika 'You can do that?????' followed by them forgetting this fact when 'their guy' is in

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 58 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They would absolutely be willing to use this type of power but only to do bad things their donors want

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 75 points 6 days ago (8 children)

Yeah Biden literally did it when he sent weapons to Israel. Overruled a bunch of checks that were supposedly supposed to stop weapons from going to countries committing war crimes.

Now imagine if he had done something for student loans, might’ve saved the election for the democrats.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 38 points 6 days ago (1 children)

sorry the sweaty the senate parliamentarian(whose 'rulings' can be legally ignored) said no :(

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 32 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Yeah love how the mystical parliamentarian prevented a bunch under Biden but the first time they tried to stop Trump he just ignored them and we found out that it was always allowed but the dems didn’t because of “decorum”.

It was known to us the entire time that they were doing the parliamentarian shtick that they could be ignored and replaced at will. They're a powerless Rules Nerd who is there to go "um akshually the rules state..." but that's literally fucking it, they have less authority than a schoolteacher.

But liberals are blueMAGA so when their guy in office and their guys on TV tell them the sky is red they hoot and holler in the ecstasy of the truth. With a Democrat president liberals have part of their brains entirely disengaged such that they are unable to even formulate the concept of a question, much less ask one or investigate whether they're being lied to

I literally owe interest on my loans almost equal to the loans at this point

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 30 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Charging interest on loans for education is crazy too, feel like the bare minimum they could do is just set the interest rates to 0%.

What's fucking crazy is there are a million and a half compromises that we could have had that would have ameliorated the extremity of capitalism's depredations but we are denied even the mildest and most milquetoast reform. And people like me are seen as the crazy, radical extremists even though I'd be totally stoked for something as small as a zero interest loan. Something mutualist anarchists were talking about in America in the fucking 1800s. Well, more like 0.5% interest in their case to pay for the administrative wages and shit to service the loan, but still

If a series of miracles happens that allows the democratic party to flourish - President Newsome at his inauguration will say...

"I and my fellow Democratic congresspeople are unable to do anything the Supreme Court. Or ICE. Or DHS. Or healthcare. Or our broken federal healthcare institutions such as HHS, CDC, etc. Or federal science funding. Or NASA. We will not be abolishing the filibuster. The list of stuff we don't do is depressing and very long. It goes on for 3 minutes. My aides timed it. But the important thing is I won! And our democracy persevered!"

But Newsome and his fellow Democratic congresspeople will take bold action on privatizing as much of the federal government as they can as they line their pockets for the good of the American People.

[–] vanDerVaartBlackenedRanch@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago (4 children)

IIRC the filibuster was effectively overturned by a procedural change this session. Bringing it back is so on-brand that your bit is still a good one.

The quotes should be around "forgetting", not "their guy".

idk perhaps for the leaders, but I honestly don't think it occurs to your average 24hr news cycle addicted lib that the red tape 'tying' the hands of dems when they try to do good things can be ripped like the repugs do when they do their bad things

In this episode Trump makes use of a little-known exception to the rules known as "who the fuck's gonna stop me?"

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 21 points 6 days ago

well the soldiers did take an oath so I'm figuring "guy who wants to pay them" vs. "whatever state entity that has to technically fight paying them against guy who pays them" should be a fair fight

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 19 points 6 days ago

I'm actually sort of surprised Trump hasn't issued a short EO on that topic with matching Truth Social post telling GOP SCOTUS to issue a quickie shadow ruling for him. The EO could state "I, as president, have plenary power," which is an equivalent to "nobody can ever fucking stop me."

I'm going to guess that 90% of troops don't want this. Any time something weird happens a hundred other things get fucked up. Maybe the special paycheck massively delays their back pay, maybe it screws up amounts and they get overpaid some amount that the army is going to notice in five years and yoink it straight back from their bank accounts, something different will go wrong and anyone who has been in the military for more than a few months knows that in their bones.

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 26 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Hard to say. I know a guy in the Navy who was having to apply for a loan from his credit union to pay the bills this month. Tough to turn down "free" money.

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 32 points 6 days ago (5 children)

I'm sorry how the fuck does someone get all these benefits and is still living paycheck to paycheck

Some people buy the Camaro before they get their arm blown off by a gernade

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 22 points 6 days ago

Americans are not taught how to manage their finances, and I imagine this to be even more true for people who join the military.

[–] LanyrdSkynrd@hexbear.net 23 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There's a guy in my town who works at a federal prison who is doing gig work on the weekends because the government cut the retention bonuses they had been getting for years due to staffing shortages.

The prison jobs are some of the highest paying in this area with solid benefits, but some people will always live at the edge of their means. Dude probably has a mortgage, a boat payment, an RV payment, an ATV payment and child support. I guess he just thought he'd get an $38k/yr for forever.

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Tbf the cost to fill the hole in your soul that that job forms is basically infinite

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 12 points 6 days ago

If you have a soul.

It seems to me to be a win-win for Trump.

If he breaks the law but gets away with it - he'll say he paid the troops. Americans are far more interested in results than the law.

If the courts stop him - he'll either say "The courts stopped me!" or he'll lie and say "The democrats stopped me!"

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 32 points 6 days ago

Venezuela's definitely happening inside the next month then. Can't have troops invading on a no-paycheck month.

[–] ufcwthrowaway@hexbear.net 36 points 6 days ago (2 children)

This is brilliant because it further erodes the sovereignty of the legislative branch, but it's about "the troops"tm so no one is gonna fight it

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 27 points 6 days ago

If Trump succeeds - I can imagine Schumer saying...

"Trump used a highly unorthodox mechanism. Only Congress has the legal authority to release funds. But this is about The Troops - TM mark - so it's great they got paid!"

[–] ufcwthrowaway@hexbear.net 20 points 6 days ago (2 children)

If the democrats were smart, they would demand that Republicans in congress pass a bill to pay the troops and then accuse them of opposing paying the troops when they fight it

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 28 points 6 days ago

If the democrats were smart...

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

a-little-trolling The pentagon has all this copper in the walls, we're taking it out and giving it to the troops

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 33 points 6 days ago (2 children)

lol at "leader." When Democrats are in power, its Dems faults, when Repubs are in power its the Dems fault. And then Dems will be like lets join hands and work together and then get ratfucked again.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 15 points 6 days ago

Well it is their fault for being so disconnected from reality that they thought a dying old man or his token cop lawyer would beat someone who has a ton of people waving flags with his name on it.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago

At critical congressional meeting behind closed doors...

"If you don't do what we want - we're gonna ratfuck you."

"Do you mean it? Really?"

"There's something seriously wrong with all of you."

"C'mon. Are you gonna ratfuck us or not?"

Then the dems leave and go talk to the media and say "We're making steady process despite some roadblocks."

praetorian guard type shit actually, not byzantine, my bad

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 27 points 6 days ago (6 children)

I'm not even sure how he'd do this illegally. If he just sends them paychecks they'll be worthless, who will cash them? It'll b fascinating to watch how he gets actual real money to them.

Funniest option: he pays them in crypto.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 23 points 6 days ago

AFAIK the president has the power to borrow money, which is why the debt ceiling is an issue every time we get close to it because Congress orders the government to spend more than its making so the President has to borrow. The only illegal part would be the sending checks part, since that's spending money that hasn't been appropriated and isn't covered by an exemption.

That said, there's a civil war-era law that could theoretically be used to justify paying the troops without an appropriation. It's only intended to apply to feeding troops (and their horses) but I can imagine that being argued over in the Supreme Court.

It would be a pretty big power grab by the presidency to take direct control of that process away from Congress but its not outside the realm of possibility given the current trajectory of the government and the stated goal of the right to concentrate more and more power in the executive.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I hate to quibble but the funniest option would be that he pays them in $TRUMP meme coins.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Imagine if Trump signs an executive order making his meme coin a legal currency that all vendors have to accept.
