Almost my whole paycheck for a ring finger potential explosive amputation?

Here in the third world we still trust knives and work hazards. Clean, effective, cheap. And my country's public health system would do it for free and with the proper safety and medical guidance.

I'm going to show my age again, but why the fuck would you want a smart ring? What do they even do that a phone can't?

Also lithium batteries are crazy dangerous, it's wild that we just have these non-removable batteries that randomly swell and explode after 5-10 years just hanging out in everything.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 39 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Reading pulse and o2 level more reliably than a smartwatch I think and as far as I know that's it. No other reason to not just get a smartwatch instead.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 49 points 2 days ago (7 children)

I'm going to show my age too and say smartwatches are worthless garbage.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 27 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Hey now it lets me know when I got a text message while my phone is on silent, counts my steps, and monitors how long I sleep. It also cost me like 40 bucks.

[–] Amir@lemmy.ml 44 points 2 days ago

I put my phone on silent for a reason...

Bonus points if your employer harvests all that biometric data to sell it to your health insurance company, and they use it to deny coverage because you didn't take enough steps during Q2

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

I honestly hated the feature that put my notifications on the watch when I briefly had a smartwatch. The wrist buzzing is far worse than having a sound or vibration on my phone. On my cheap watch, the sleep tracking was also laughably inaccurate.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago (6 children)

There has only ever been one good smartwatch, the pebble, and it failed as a product

[–] CarbonConscious@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

It was actually doing pretty well as a product, and they were literally weeks away from releasing the extemely promising new version, but they got hostile-takeovered by Fitbit who was somewhere between threatened by their success and strip-mining the company for patents or staff.

Fitbit immediately shut down the new release.

Then Fitbit got bought by Google, who obviously has their own interests to maintain in that market.

Garmin watches are pretty great. The only piece of running gear other than shoes that has actually made me faster.

I had a full set of dice for DND on mine! And I could shuffle through songs. That was about all I used it for

I was thinking that a smart watch with integration for Obsidian or some other note taking app would be nice, you could tell it to take notes while driving for example.

I've no idea, but many of the middle aged people around here have fallen for the oura ring grift. Then they spend all their time worrying about their optimal sleep or heartrate variability and what their ring 'tells" them.

Just another step in the neoliberal self-governance through consumption thing.

What does this thing even do? It has no screen so its just like, an expensive pulse monitor? I'm so concerned about my heart metrics I need to pay a third of rent towards measuring it constantly with the Samsung Finger-Amputator Mk3, wirelessly connected to my Samsung Personal Spy Device?

[–] Lerios@hexbear.net 55 points 2 days ago (2 children)

i saw the ads for this and was so hyped that these freaks were getting rich idiots to pay for jewelery with points of failure. impeccable

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

analog jewelry is so lame according to BrooklynRizzler on tiktok, the most sponsored influencer of all time.

you need to upgrade your old grandpa jewelry to the latest smart jewelry so you can look up your jewelry on your phone and get instant, real time notification from the AksesorizeApp to let you know when you've just shit yourself.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

Real "James Bond trading his Rolex for a Seiko digital watch in Moonraker" energy.

[–] Nama@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I have a normal friend who doesn't like smart watches, but who wants to monitor his sleep/activity for health reasons.

It's not all rich idiots who pay for this.

[–] WrongOnTheInternet@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You can buy smart rings for like $30 though

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And really get to deal with a ticking yime bomb around your fingee

[–] WrongOnTheInternet@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

The difference between a $30 ring and $400 ring is $370 of profit margin

You can't get a ticking time bomb ring because the US doesn't have that level of manufacturing capability

smart rings only do that when they’re stressed out

[–] Beetle@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why does this person think samsung has some kind of magical solution to shrink the battery again or something? They need to go to ER and get it cut off asap.

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What if cutting it makes the battery explode/initiate that termite-like fire reaction?

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 days ago

Just don't let it explode smh my head

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago

I made sure to get a wedding ring that doesn't fully close because I'm scared it'll get stuck somehow i don't even really know how.

Maybe i should stick a bomb on it...

I wanted to see if he lost his finger

https://xcancel.com/ZONEofTECH/status/1973019200563069276

Update:

  • I was denied boarding due to this (been travelling for ~47h straight so this is really nice 🙃). Need to pay for a hotel for the night now and get back home tomorrow👌

  • was sent to the hospital, as an emergency

  • ring got removed

You can see the battery all swollen.

Won’t be wearing a smart ring ever again.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

Finally got home after way over 50h of flying/travelling 😅

Samsung reached out to me:

  • refunded me for my overnight hotel
  • booked me a car to get me home this morning
  • collected the ring from me, for further investigation

My finger is also doing well, aside from some small marks that I'm sure will heal in a few days.

Some extra things to mention:

  • the battery of my ring has been acting very weird for many months (stopped lasting for more than 1-1.5 days and at one point, didn't even power on after being charged for a full day, until I charged it for 2 days)

  • when this swelling incident happened, it wasn't even charged

  • many other users have been experiencing similar battery life issues - old.reddit.com/r/samsung/comment…

old.reddit.com/r/GalaxyRing/comm…

  • one user also reported battery swelling, a few months ago old.reddit.com/r/GalaxyRing/comm…

Personally, I think there's something going on with the battery inside many (if not most) Galaxy Rings.

According to these posts on Reddit, Samsung has been offering free replacements but even these ended up having the same issue, later on.

Samsung told me they'll inform me of the investigation findings, so will keep you guys posted! Hopefully they diagnose the issue and permanently replace all the affected units.

You are going to need to go into the parking lot and find a Cybertruck immediately

i do not understand people who wear rings.

"yeah im gonna put this constructing metal thing on my finger until it gets too tight to take it off and someone needs to cut it with a saw"

we should all be wearing Wedding Stickers instead

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 44 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

same reason we wear makeup, get piercings, get tattoos, wear hair accessories, dye hair, etc.
we like to decorate ourselves, it's fun and looks nice

[–] booty@hexbear.net 41 points 2 days ago

at the end of the day im just a really funny lookin monkey, i like to adorn myself with pretty things

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

God I hope we get video of the amputation.
