We live in the UK. She didn't go any further than this. I got her to download TOR and use the "old.Reddit" trick to bypass this so it was only mildly infuriating for her in the end

What about using lynx or eww?

[–] roserose56@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Once more Reddit! Yea!!! Just delete your account and move along.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 3 points 1 day ago

I would - if Reddit would allow me to log in.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I was banned 5 days ago for 6 days. Can I be strong enough not to go back? Please give me the strength to stay away.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I got a 3 day ban, 2nd offence, on my 6th account, after the 3-day ban I abandon the account.

Only took 6 weeks this time and I was watching myself. They have dishonest moderation At Site wide level and I do not want to use it at all either, unless maybe two Shuffle people to the fediverse.

[–] ronl2k@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They have dishonest moderation

The mods are also unaccountable. They can (and do) simply ignore your DMs asking for details or reconsideration of your ban. And even if they do respond, the reasoning will be a short gibberish response that you cannot appeal.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Also many will remove your comments without telling you, it appears to be posted, I learned reveddit showed you what was removed.

But yeah mods work for free so allowing their petty tyranny is a selling point of the gig, not sure how lemmy works, did see one dude that said banned user arguing with people on another instance.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

The audience over there is definitely a lot less intelligent than we have over here. And the bots & reposts & even bots COMMENTING are probably an overwhelming majority of the audience over there. It's sick & pointless & a waste of time & I must break the addiction.

[–] roserose56@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I'm not gonna lie, I visit Reddit too, but without an account and in private, for 3 and only communities. Most of my time is Lemmy. You can start slowly like I do. People use to complain about dead niche communities here, but no one contributes like some users do every day here. Be the change and help communities grow, so you don't have to go back to Reddit.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You could use redlib.catsarch.com or redlib.lesbnyan.top

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

lesbnyan.top

I don't understand fancy tech lingo and that sounds vaguely kinky.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is.

It's a portmanteau of lesbian and nyan.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Wow and you just taught me the definition of "portmanteau" in context too. I never really knew what that word meant but it sounds like a big fancy wooden piece of furniture.

It's also one of those.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It's a piece of luggage actually. Fun fact Portmanteau is itself a portmanteau of porter (to carry) and manteau (mantle).

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 54 points 2 days ago (27 children)

Christ. Stop using fucking reddit already

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The problem is that the vast majority of content and activity is on the more normie side of the web.

People still use X more than BlueSky or Mastodon, after all.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

It's where the porn is. Is my hypothesis.

[–] some_random_nick@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago

We would love to, if not for the accumulated knowledge which can't be (easily) found elsewhere.

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

To be fair it's about the new UK nanny dictatorship law.

In theory lemmy should do the same and the UK government could sue and block access of any lemmy instance not following their ludicrous laws.

Politics, tech, and Star Trek are the only three topics on Lemmy in any significant numbers, and even tech is politics half the time. The gaming communities are mostly politics about gaming, the porn communities are mostly dead, and forget anything more specific (other than Trek of course.)

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 36 points 2 days ago (12 children)

Because Lemmy is mostly just a political soapbox, there's not enough actual non-political content.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 33 points 2 days ago

post some non political content then. encourage others to.

This sounds more like a "fuck UK age restriction laws" not reddit.

The UK's age restriction laws online are now enforced under the Online Safety Act (OSA), which requires online platforms to verify the age of users before they access categories of "harmful" content, including pornography and content related to self-harm or eating disorders. Websites, apps, and services hosting such content must implement robust age checks, with platforms facing significant fines or blocking if they fail to comply. Methods for age verification can include facial age estimation, ID scanning, or credit card checks.

[–] ronl2k@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Methods for age verification can include facial age estimation

Can't that be easily bypassed by using an older person for the selfie shot?

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

They did not call out the true mofivation of lawmakers so they are complicit.

[–] BertramDitore@lemmy.zip 42 points 2 days ago (6 children)

“Estimate age from selfie”?! Wtf have we become…

When I was 14, I looked like I was 20. When I was 20, I looked like I was 35. When I was 35, I looked like I was 50. You can’t determine someone’s actual age from a fucking photo. Jesus.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Am 45. Constantly get told by 20 somethings that I look 26-28. I still get carded.....

Reddit needs a better tagging system than just NSFW. It was pointless having a filter when you don't subscribe to any porn subreddits and all the ones you are subscribed to don't allow porn in the first place. It's only natural people started using NSFW for other things, most notably spoilers, which I believe they've added in recent years. If you had the filter enabled, you ended up missing out on content.

[–] OboTheHobo@ttrpg.network 18 points 2 days ago (3 children)

It does need better tagging but honestly thats not the issue here. This is because of the new UK law, simple as.

Can’t have kids looking at teeth! Next thing you know, they’ll want to become, forgive me for this, dentists.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 22 points 2 days ago

Rofl what a piece of piss website

[–] livejamie@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 days ago

Oi mate! Ya got a loicense fer dat dental advice?

[–] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Fun fact: I can't see the screenshot as I'm in the UK and your instance has taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning of the OSA and blocked access just in case anything's accidentally not flagged as NSFW.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The idiots here are your lawmakers and their supporters.

Reddit isn't worth it any more IMO, It's all just downvoting and moaning over everything. Yes that happens here but at least people seem to talk more.
