the Iranian military attacked a crowd of protesters, killing ~88 and injuring between 205-8,000. The violence increased the unrest, leading to a general strike and the Shah fleeing the country in January 1979.

The massacre, known as Black Friday, began when thousands of protesters gathered in Tehran's Jaleh Square for a religious demonstration, unaware that the government had declared martial law a day earlier due to widespread political unrest.

Some sources estimate that 4,000 people were shot down by tanks, guns, and military helicopters. The deaths were described as the pivotal event in the Iranian Revolution that ended any "hope for compromise" between the protest movement and regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

The massacre led to widespread protests, and a general strike in October shut down the petroleum industry that was essential to the administration's survival. The Shah fled Iran in January 1979, clearing the way for the Iranian Revolution, led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

By banning both pork and combining meat and cheese, kosher food rules expertly avoid cringe Reddit foods.

Reading these lists of people who signed these Zionist open letters can be so heartbreaking.

Same as all those who signed the Polanski one I guess. Honestly not nearly as bad mostly the list I posted has shit actors etc there's just a few good ones.

But yeah I guess now I'm going to respond "oh you mean Jordan Peele the Zionist??" when he's brought up. Unlimited genocide on the first world hamas-red-triangle qin-shi-huangdi-fireball

how much do y'all think a "vegan chef" should be paid "in the south" (u.s.)

by "chef" i mean it's technically my job title and I cook like 3 dishes to feed the 70-80ish people who eat vegan stuff at this school and frequently make extra stuff when I have time and despite it not being my explicit responsibility (my predecessor was like 'i'm not paid enough for that' and didn't) I work with the sous chef to figure out the side items on the menu + frequently ad-lib/change them (for the better) (so even though I am like 70% imposter syndrome here I still feel like I'm 30% cheffing it)

I KNOW I'm underpaid I just want y'all to give me a number

I fed a squirrel today! She ate for a while, took two long drinks out of the birth bath, and then went back home.

I might be too conspiracy brained, but I'm pretty sure the YouTube thing with adding an "AI looking filter" to random videos is about tricking viewers into not noticing when a video is AI generated, or conditioning us into thinking "this is just what videos of real people look like"

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I might be too corporate job brained, but most changes like that I just assume it’s because someone’s performance review was coming so they asked the team they’re leading to do some random thing they just thought up.

I think a nontrivial part of enshitification isn’t even profit driven, it’s middle managers trashing around fighting for cost of living raises.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 3 points 3 hours ago

That absolutely sounds like something Google would do.

My semi-retired liberal mom asked me how I learned about Nepal's government collapse so quickly and I mentioned Hexbear and Xiahongshu. She said she'd check it out, so that was probably a mistake.

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 5 points 5 hours ago

Her reaction to Moscow time on the front page should be interesting.

I lost the bracelet, but i think we've normalized. It wasn't right to cut contact to give her space, but now i think we're at the healthy distance we need to be at. This also means we're not cut from each other's life. I talked in loops when i didn't know what to do, but now it feels like we're better.

The work remains to do though.

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Happy for you. I hope my relationship with my ex still exists (haven't talked in a couple weeks) and is able to reach a similar place.

[–] Grownbravy@hexbear.net 2 points 3 hours ago

it's taken a while, and i did more for myself by not keeping no contact, but she eventually shared with me that "it's love poured out on dry earth" i needed to take love for myself. That's the difficultly of the last year. It would make loving me difficult, draining. I dont disagree. I've already looked into myself, but i see what she means.

For me I take it that I need to set goals, something to work towards to achieve. I took too long and grew listless, and it meant her love no longer had a vessel to hold it. Maybe if I get on this I can turn things around, she can see a future, but that only comes when she can see it. I cant do more than make myself better.

I think i've broken through the worst of it. and funny enough it was by not giving into my isolation, to what weird habits they brought me. I need to remember that there are other people in my future too. She tends to try and remain friends with the people in her life that even hurt her, that bodes well for me. Unless she meets someone and they're like everything i'm working towards, then i'll understand truly that one quote that "Hell is when the person you are meets the person you could've been."

low level gear in MMOs is intentionally ugly to serve as a humiliation ritual for new players theory-gary

i don’t care if these level 1 boots have zero practical value, they’re the only thigh highs i have so i’m wearing them 😀

People always forget that poodles are hunting dogs. They are retrievers! the show poodle cut is to reduce their weight in water while still protecting vital organs, which is why they have fur on their chest but none on their legs except around their ankles. The pom pom tail is just for fun!

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 12 points 7 hours ago

Rednote really has won me over at this point. I reported some Zionist shithead who said something along the lines of "hell yeah, kill them all!" and within a few minutes I got an auto-response that confirmed that they removed that shit. The bare minimum of moderation and I'm fully sold

The Playing PokΓ©mon in the School Playground meta has really evolved since I was a kid. I live next to an elementary school and heard a kid yell "im out of Pokeballs!". Back when we played pretend we had infinite pokeballs

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 3 points 4 hours ago

I received the 10 dollar prescription glasses I bought from AliExpress just from sheer curiosity today. They feel incredibly cheap, light and plastic-y but dang, they actually work. Nice to have as a backup

Might get cheap sunglasses next

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Fuck perhaps I should order from there. I gotta restrict myself to a tight budget and Zenni is still a bit expensive for me. And none of their frames are big and nerdy enough for me

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

The brand I picked was Zenottic, which seems to be a fairly known quantity when it comes to AliExpress glasses. There's other ones too, like BlueMoky. You might not be able to get glasses this cheap right now- the glasses I got usually cost about 25-30 dollars but I lucked out with a big coin discount. I'd been keeping an eye on AliExpress glasses for a while now and this was the best deal I've seen so far. I personally wouldn't have picked these specific frames under normal circumstances, but I just wanted to see if AE glasses were a viable option so I wasn't too concerned with style and just went with whatever was cheapest.

Also note that things like lens index, how strong your prescription is, etc. can have a big impact on the price. For example, I played around with different options while making my order and noticed that going from 1.61 to 1.67 basically doubled the price, not that 18 bucks is a whole lot for glasses either.

I think the uptick in people identifying as "multi-racial" on the census might just be people like me who tick all the ethnicity boxes just for the fun of it
