An image of two garbage collectors. One in the foreground is walking towards the garbage truck while pulling a yellow recycling bin. Another garbage collector is in the back of the truck with their hands raised in a friendly way. The words of the meme are "THERE'S NO OFFICIAL TRAINING FOR GARBAGE COLLECTORS. THEY HAVE TO PICK IT UP AS THEY GO ALONG"

I'm pretty sure they have a ton of training because it's dangerous as fuck

True, but jokes aside those trash cans are heavy, like they have good strength.

Here in the UK, the bins have wheels and the truck hooks into them and lifts them. They just wheel it to the vehicle

In Canada they don't even have to get out of the trucks anymore except when people fail at simple tasks like proper spacing between compost and garbage bins or someone parks too close.

Not sure how often that is. Probably an annoying percentage.

Where I live it's the same, the machine does all the work. But there's always one or two dudes that walk ahead of the truck and make sure it's all positioned and spaced correctly. Especially in the city where streets can be narrow and there isn't enough room, they end up just wheeling the bins into the machine a couple at a time.

Interesting! I'm also Canadian but still see garbage bin running along the side of the trucks to pick up bins.

Yeah Croatia too, I just remember seeing, as a child, how they needed to actually lift those, not sure if they still need to lift them but they do have wheels.

In this part of California the trucks have a robot mechanism that the drive controls, so the driver stays in the cab unless something goes wrong. I've seen them stop to dump out cardboard from the truck because it wasn't in the recycling bin.

One driver doesn't even stop, they just keep rolling as the bin gets dumped, so they often drop it blocking the neighbor's driveway.

I assumed this was talking about the computing thing, maybe I should go outside

A disinformation campaign started by normies.

Are there still municipalities that haven't automated the container pick up part of it? Those trucks have the added benefit of having cameras track what is dumped at each address.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Mass surveillance of trash is certainly not a benefit to everyday people

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's mostly for recycling since garbage is bagged. In my town you'll get a notice of you recycle things that clog the sorters.

There was more checks when it was by hand. They'd slap on a sticker and refuse pick up. I prefer the nasty gram.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Recycling is cool and all but pretty much all the plastic that goes in those bins ends up in the ocean or landfill

Instead there should be a glass bin, an organics bin, and a landfill bin

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Getting off topic here but metals and paper too. We don't have organics bins here. Only in the past few years has a third party service become available.

"This guy dumps a lot of things wrapped up to look like dead human bodies. Haha. What a jokester."

Thanks for this short 1 frame job site training video.
