Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

So I finally have a weekend where I play three or four different games and that's the week there's no weekly game discussion? Man...

So the Deeprock Galactic boardgame is amazing and the new Monstroscopy character is really good for cheesing the final boss.

Got a bigger SD card and I'm downcycling all the cards to the other handheld consoles I have so I got to upgrade my PSP to 256 up from 200GB, but you have to trick it into doing this and you need to get lucky with the right memory card/sd adapter because even from the same distributor it seems they'll work randomly or not with cards bigger than 128GB. Was able to post about it online to let people know how to do this correctly, hopefully it helps someone.

Washed all the walls finally, they get dirty here for whatever reason. I think it's asian beetles and humidity. Dusted all the ceiling fans. Did the laundry. Took out all the garbage and recycling. Watched up to the 2nd-last Yugioh season 0 episode (it's still just OK). Organized some of my digital music library (still have like 40 albums to add/organize). Helped my mom with some digital stuff in the morning (set up a Windows shared folder that can be accessed by devices as needed). Proofed some yeast and made some garlic bread dough before my next activity.

Went for my first bike ride of the year! Was all right. It was both sunny and gloomy due to dark clouds on the horizon which sometimes I like and sometimes don't like. I guess it was OK today. Listened to some TrueAnon episodes and Stop It! a screamo band.

Got home, garage door is fucking busted due to squirrels so I went to manually close it and the latch cord snapped. Was able to fix it and my dad says the door does close if you stand and hold the button until it closes because the sensors are covered with insulation. It's so fucking dumb how he openly fantasizes about killing small creatures like a psycho, but won't just kill these fucking squirrels or better yet do that and then also rodent-proof the garage/sheds at least somewhat. He also complained about a new hazmat tax. He really is like elementary-level on things because he didn't know what hazardous materials are and seemed skeptical at all how there might be any in the creation of acetylene gas or whatever he bought.

Made spaghetti and Ikea veggie-meatballs with vegan cheese garlic sticks/fingers. Turned out really well. Oh and a banana smoothie. Watched a couple episodes of Flowers Of Evil anime with mom. Further cleaned up the kitchen so that's all good for now.

Today wasn't bad. Oh, also sewed a Converge patch onto my jacket, which might be the last patch I put on it.

Oh, also put surge protectors on all my outlets in my bedroom. Finally fixed the power bar I had mounted to a wall that came undone on one side and was drooping. Did some other stuff, but I can't remember. I got a lot done.

Edit: Carefully cut the $5 Staples prints of Lucky Star hiragana/katakana I got and sticky-tacked them to the side of my shelf. Look nice and motivate me to keep up with learning japanese enough to grope through video games and stuff.

When people say “You can’t be putting your hope on China to save us, we have to save ourselves” I get the point but honestly it sounds naive to me. Which is ironic since they think I’m naive.

Like, I saw someone say we need an “American Che” and like, that’d be cool but that’s not where we are.

This is 1939 Germany. We don’t need an American Che, we need a Mexican Stalin and a Chinese FDR. Did the German resistance do good and important work? Of course they did. But did they stop the Nazis? No, the Nazis were only stopped by military intervention from outside forces.

Genuinely I see very little hope for a positive future in North America that doesn’t involve being militarily occupied. I hope I’m wrong.

[–] GeneralSwitch2Boycott@hexbear.net 1 points 19 minutes ago

Yeah, all Americans are gettin' is fucking American Gustav Noske.

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 2 points 33 minutes ago (1 children)

I will also accept a Chinese Stalin and a Canadian FDR, but honestly I think Canada is Austria in this analogy

All this talk of popes is bringing back all the discordianism in me. Now I must put on a fancy hat and parade around in my great self importance. Remember that we are all popes!

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 2 points 17 minutes ago

Put the discordianism back. Those guys led us to modern tech bros

Currently sitting in a lovely newly-opened Palestinian cafe in southern Ontario within a quick walk of my workplace. Can't say which one due to doxxing potential. Death to capitalism of course but the owners are lovely people. And the ambiance is wonderful and the food and drinks are fantastic. This is going to be a new favourite place.

This place is getting busy. Love seeing that. Very mixed clientele too, also a good sign.

While I'm on the side of people that find the old Star Wars Extended Universe's highs being better than most of the stuff that is canon now, but Andor, especially if it sticks it's landing, will be better than anything from the EU.

[–] SoloboiNanook@hexbear.net 12 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Fuck da pope why do people care about the pope. When has a pope ever had a real degree of success in changing the views of anyone

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 7 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

They did used to have an army and kill people. That was a pretty effective strategy on their part

[–] SoloboiNanook@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago

1 day conclave is crazy. Need to stretch it out a few days and make it basically a festival like the NFL draft. They should let me be a producer for the next one

Getting my car professionally detailed cuz I think I'm probably going to have to drive for uber this month, I lifted up the back seats and found almost an entire dog worth of Husky fur hiding there. Tipped the guy an extra $15 cuz that's probably the worst car he'll see all day, lmao

[–] MiraculousMM@hexbear.net 3 points 16 minutes ago

The lyrics in a nutshell are "I'm upset that I'm not allowed see my kids, so I have no choice but to say Hitler is cool"

I'm honestly kind of shocked I'm not seeing more about Donda 2 on my social media feeds. Hope it stays that way, fuck that Nazi. A couple weeks ago (or whenever) he announced Donda 2 was dropping I started seeing some posts and it pissed me off.

Not to bring up old business but why were we calling Harris by her first name? Was just sexism or was the DNC trying to play up diversity?

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 3 points 45 minutes ago* (last edited 39 minutes ago)

It’s how she mostly branded herself. Like, her campaign website was “KamalaHQ.” It’s more unique and memorable.

Bernie is usually referred to by his first name. No one was out here saying “Vote for Sanders.” He used his first name in most of his marketing too, my bumper sticker just said “Bernie 2016.”

AOC tends to use her initials in branding and that’s how people usually refer to her, not sure if that’s the chicken or the egg though. Several older ones for initials too, FDR, JFK, LBJ, RFK.

Not his actual name but a nickname, Dwight D. Eisenhower campaigned with the slogan “I/We like Ike”

I know people were branding it as sexism but aside from hillary-disgust I can’t even think of another female politician that just gets referred to by her first name, and hillgasm was married to a president so last name isn’t really helpful with that one

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 4 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

When I Google Kamala Harris campaign I see plenty of decorations that say Harris, but I also see a non-0 amount where she is self-refererentially Kamala.

That's gotta factor into the algebra.

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 1 points 37 minutes ago

All of the politicians I can think of that are mostly known by their first name it’s self referential. Kamala, Hillary, Bernie, they all put their first names as the thing on signs and stickers, it was how they tried to be known.
