Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

Getting my car professionally detailed cuz I think I'm probably going to have to drive for uber this month, I lifted up the back seats and found almost an entire dog worth of Husky fur hiding there. Tipped the guy an extra $15 cuz that's probably the worst car he'll see all day, lmao

1 day conclave is crazy. Need to stretch it out a few days and make it basically a festival like the NFL draft. They should let me be a producer for the next one

Not to bring up old business but why were we calling Harris by her first name? Was just sexism or was the DNC trying to play up diversity?

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 2 points 15 minutes ago

I think mostly sexism and a small part of it was people calling her by her full name when she was VP/AG compared to like just calling Biden, Biden and then it got shorted to her first name

It's gonna sound extremely privileged but I'll say it my checks can 6 lbs can of unsweeten applesauce is too big. If I open it I'll have to commit to making something within the same couple of days or it will go bad and I only brought this on myself. I got it since by volume it was cheaper than the smaller ones and a great egg substitute until I found ground flax seeds where are way better just because of shelf life and storage btw. I'll use it up this weekend making cookies and pancakes maybe a cake too idk it's gonna be delicious

Which would you rather have as a side with vegan chicken tikka masala

Rajma masala (curried red kidney beans) with rice

Or

Rajma pulao (red kidney bean rice pilaf)

[–] Sickos@hexbear.net 1 points 24 minutes ago

Rajma pulao; I think the meal would benefit from the carbs--unless there's already naan around.

This is probably one of my best menus that i've stumbled into work and thrown together with no prep

Moroccan vegetable stew, moroccan rice pilaf (cumin/paprika/chili seasoned with cranberries, raisins, and toasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds crushed up into it) and an orange and fennel tagine. The savory parts of the stew mix so well with the sweetness of the fruit and the orange from the tagine

God im good at food

This is the only thing I know about him, from Wikipedia, and I already hate him.

CW: Mentions of SA

spoilerPrevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.

99.99% sure the guy who started this week at my out of town construction job with my crew is in an actual hell's Angel's puppet gang. He wears a lot of merch from them and wears the "1%" patch prominently on his clothes. From my research he's either a violent guy or risking a lot by pretending to be one

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 2 points 2 hours ago

I'm not tough nor aware of how to act around him so I'm gonna just try not to interact and hope for the best

Just learned about operation CHASE (Cut Holes And Sink Em), US sank 3 ships with chemical weapons on them and more ships with conventional weapons as a way if disposing of them, not caring or knowing how that would effect the ecosystem

Other countries also did this and sometimes fishermen come in contact with the chemical weapons and die and some fish in areas where there were dumps have higher levels of arsenic πŸ‘

I tried watching Jordan Klepper for whatever reason and there’s a moment where he mocks a Hungarian blaming the US and NATO for the situation in Ukraine. Jordan treats him like an idiot while doing smarmy gotchas. Something about the Daily Show and its alumni annoy the hell out of me.

I've been listening to Roadside Picnic by The Strugatsky Brothers. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Robert Forster is the narrator as he's an actor I have a soft spot for, and a great character actor can really change an audiobook into a rich experience (like John Malkovich reading Breakfast of Champions or Keith David reading Tolstoy's Master and Man.)

I'm really enjoying it so far, and the conversational nature of the dialogue works really well in the audiobook form, feels like just being told an interesting story.

While this is obviously the basis of Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979), reading this it feels like Alex Garland's Annihilation (2018) cribbed really hard from this.
