Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

They put the wrong stuff in the chimney and had to scramble to find a new pope

Currently sitting in a lovely newly-opened Palestinian cafe in southern Ontario within a quick walk of my workplace. Can't say which one due to doxxing potential. Death to capitalism of course but the owners are lovely people. And the ambiance is wonderful and the food and drinks are fantastic. This is going to be a new favourite place.

This place is getting busy. Love seeing that. Very mixed clientele too, also a good sign.

While I'm on the side of people that find the old Star Wars Extended Universe's highs being better than most of the stuff that is canon now, but Andor, especially if it sticks it's landing, will be better than anything from the EU.

Fuck da pope why do people care about the pope. When has a pope ever had a real degree of success in changing the views of anyone

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

They did used to have an army and kill people. That was a pretty effective strategy on their part

[–] SoloboiNanook@hexbear.net 1 points 28 minutes ago

freeman-true

Can't argue with that

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 1 points 57 minutes ago

They claim Peter was the first pope so that's probably their GOAT converter and he might not even have been a real guy

[–] GuyWTriangle@hexbear.net 12 points 2 hours ago

1 day conclave is crazy. Need to stretch it out a few days and make it basically a festival like the NFL draft. They should let me be a producer for the next one

[–] Goblin@hexbear.net 6 points 1 hour ago

New pope? Yeah, I fucked him.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 6 points 2 hours ago

Getting my car professionally detailed cuz I think I'm probably going to have to drive for uber this month, I lifted up the back seats and found almost an entire dog worth of Husky fur hiding there. Tipped the guy an extra $15 cuz that's probably the worst car he'll see all day, lmao

Not to bring up old business but why were we calling Harris by her first name? Was just sexism or was the DNC trying to play up diversity?

When I Google Kamala Harris campaign I see plenty of decorations that say Harris, but I also see a non-0 amount where she is self-refererentially Kamala.

That's gotta factor into the algebra.

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago

I think mostly sexism and a small part of it was people calling her by her full name when she was VP/AG compared to like just calling Biden, Biden and then it got shorted to her first name

It's gonna sound extremely privileged but I'll say it my checks can 6 lbs can of unsweeten applesauce is too big. If I open it I'll have to commit to making something within the same couple of days or it will go bad and I only brought this on myself. I got it since by volume it was cheaper than the smaller ones and a great egg substitute until I found ground flax seeds where are way better just because of shelf life and storage btw. I'll use it up this weekend making cookies and pancakes maybe a cake too idk it's gonna be delicious

They were still moving (thankfully I didn't cut them) so I out them outside

[–] psychoplantkiller@hexbear.net 2 points 6 minutes ago (1 children)

Did you still eat the broccoli?

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 1 points 2 minutes ago

...yeah I rinsed it again and roasted it

[–] WizardOfLoneliness@hexbear.net 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Which would you rather have as a side with vegan chicken tikka masala

Rajma masala (curried red kidney beans) with rice

Or

Rajma pulao (red kidney bean rice pilaf)

[–] Sickos@hexbear.net 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Rajma pulao; I think the meal would benefit from the carbs--unless there's already naan around.

[–] WizardOfLoneliness@hexbear.net 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

there's gonna be rice either way, with the rajma masala basically I'll cook the bean curry and then serve it in a trench made of rice, and with the pilaf it'll just be part of it

naan

I would put out the sweet potato flatbreads i make (and the sous chef insists on emptying out the freezer before summer break even though im pretty sure they'll be perfectly fine in August, so i do need to use them before next Friday) but I just put those out today for the moroccan stew i made and I can't do the same thing 2x in a row i'll look like what I am, an amateur

maybe on that note i shouldn't do the rajma pulao since I did a moroccan rice pilaf today... but idk since they'll taste very different

This is probably one of my best menus that i've stumbled into work and thrown together with no prep

Moroccan vegetable stew, moroccan rice pilaf (cumin/paprika/chili seasoned with cranberries, raisins, and toasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds crushed up into it) and an orange and fennel tagine. The savory parts of the stew mix so well with the sweetness of the fruit and the orange from the tagine

God im good at food

[–] Sickos@hexbear.net 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Sounds excellent, I'm jealous and hungry

Thank you, it all turned out really good imo, unfortunately even though i told all my coworkers to eat the different dishes together (which resulted in very interesting interactions of flavors) literally nobody did that πŸ˜‘

I wish y'all could try my food 😫 especially since i know this website will love that vegan shit

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I wrote a 300 word email explaining an issue someone asked about and my coworkers are acting like I wrote a 5 page essay that needs an AI summary

I've written things clients have had a financial incentive to receive. It was an attachment and instructions for what to do with it. It was replete with actionable steps in bold.

It still took them a month to get into a meeting and ask me to set up a dropbox or something. It was only after I explained that Dropbox would actually be more effort than they went and searched their inbox for it, found it, and used it.

Turns out they were given way more than they could handle and the entire project was secondary to the duties they were accustomed to. It was after that when I relented on how much I judge someone for being bad in an office. Even if they are being stupid I sort of shrug my shoulders.

I deep fried an egg today

Are we dealing with a Woke Pope, folks? Is this a Woke Pope??

This is the only thing I know about him, from Wikipedia, and I already hate him.

CW: Mentions of SA

spoilerPrevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.

Just learned about operation CHASE (Cut Holes And Sink Em), US sank 3 ships with chemical weapons on them and more ships with conventional weapons as a way if disposing of them, not caring or knowing how that would effect the ecosystem

Other countries also did this and sometimes fishermen come in contact with the chemical weapons and die and some fish in areas where there were dumps have higher levels of arsenic πŸ‘

99.99% sure the guy who started this week at my out of town construction job with my crew is in an actual hell's Angel's puppet gang. He wears a lot of merch from them and wears the "1%" patch prominently on his clothes. From my research he's either a violent guy or risking a lot by pretending to be one

I tried watching Jordan Klepper for whatever reason and there’s a moment where he mocks a Hungarian blaming the US and NATO for the situation in Ukraine. Jordan treats him like an idiot while doing smarmy gotchas. Something about the Daily Show and its alumni annoy the hell out of me.
