Hiya, for my 24th birthday I was thinking about getting a steam deck. I've had a steam account for years but I gain nothing from it because... I just don't like playing on the computer. I was raised on GameBoy Advanced, DS Lite, DSi... and got myself a Nintendo Switch in 2020 :)

I play Stardew Valley on my Switch and I've heard there's tons of Mods you can get on Steam. I've also been eyeing Fields of Mistria, which is in its early access right now, I believe. So as someone who only plays video games really casually... do you often get issues with crashing or bugs? Is the price worth it? Are there many unsupported games? (I just saw apparently Silent Hill 2 won't work on Steam Deck, safe to assume the same goes for Until Dawn then?)

And if you enjoy your Steam Deck (I would assume since we're on this sub) which games would you particularly recommend??

Sorry if this is the-most-asked-question on this sub, I'm kinda out of the loop with video games and technology these days and I wanna treat myself to something nice without many issues, if that makes sense. Thanks for helping out!!

Hey guys. Just recently bought the steam deck OLED. I am really impressed with the feel and power of this machine. The OS is also amazing.

Unfortunately I am one of those people that is bothered by the low pwm flicker on the OLED. This is the only OLED screen that has made my eyes strain and fatigue within 20 mins of usage.

I have used the OLED switch and my OLED TV with no trouble. I just recently got my eyes tested, so I know it’s not a vision issue.

So I’m wondering how much of a downgrade the LCD is compared to the OLED. I figured this would be the best place to ask because where I live, no one owns one and it is rare to see used ones go up on FB marketplace. Should I save my money and wait for the deck 2, or is the LCD still worth it?

so. i just wanna start by saying this will be a very long post. ty to anyone who reads it all and if anyone important (to the steam decks production) or higher up in steam reads this then also thank you. i doubt they will or will care enough to but ik sometimes ppl higher up do read their reddits so maybe. now story time.

around 2 years ago in around early to mid 2022 i got very ill (chrons disease). i had been hospitalised and the like with chrons many times since my diagnosis over 10 years ago now. however my surgery was iffy and stuff happened and i wasnt doing well. i ended up in intensive care. i had been eyeing up a steam deck for a litlle while as a thing for emulation and as new tech it just seemed cool. my mum agreed to me getting it as a early birthday present and using my bday money id get later for it (ordering it then back in march/april or so even though my bday was june).

at the time i felt it was a bit expensive (but much cheaper than windows equivalent machines). decided its fine and i deserve a treat regardless. i ended up being in hospital for a year, having multiple surgeries and almost dying on several occassions. throughout the entire admission of stay my steam deck kept me a little sane by being able to play games offline and then sometimes using a vpn to get around hospital wifi restrictions to play steam games in hospital with my friends online.

the steam deck had become something to help me through hospital boredom and kept me sane during a very bad time in my life. now i end up in hospital every so often (probably a week or 2 every 2 months) still (including as i write this lol) and i use the steam deck every time i am and have been in hospital since i bought it. at home i have a full gaming rig (though its not the MOST powerful its a good mid spec pc) which is also why i initially hesitated buying a steam deck wondering how much i'd actually use the thing and if it would be worth (100000% was btw if anyone was jw)

so if anyone reads this who helped make, develop, actively works on or anything of the sort with the steam deck even people like cryo or the deckmate guy who helped with other stuff and qol things. thank you from the bottom of my heart. this machine has kept me mentally sane and has been a godsend with all my health stuff and hospital stuff being how it is. even now my health is uncertain but i remain hopeful and sane. i think without the steam deck i would have been mentally much worse off (not great normally either but this thing makes it a lot better) and i also woild have not enjoyed my fav hobby or been able to pass time if it wasnt for this thing. so again ty everyone and anyone who made and makes any of the syeam decks stuff possible.

i know im just one person and i know that pretty much noone will probably read this post but i just wanted to say ty to anyone and everyone kncluding the general community aswell. also if anybody read all that thank you aswell. i basically just wanted to write a love letter for this machine. i love this thing

Just picked this up three days ago. It's incredible fun.

What I've found is that I've spent about 95% of my time in Desktop Mode. I didn't know Linux at all and it's been a blast learning it. I spend tons of time in Dolphin File Manager and it was downright comical following some of the tutorials. "Simply right click on the title bar and...." and I'm like, how the hell do you right click? So that's a Google search. Continue on with that about 1000 times and now I'm functionally literate in it.

I've spent the majority of the time gathering up all the 25-30 year old abandonware games I played in my youth and making them work. Very few just worked perfectly the first time. I've spent hours on Emudeck and Steam Rom Manager and the various emulators (RPCS3, Xenia, MAME) and it's been so much fun tweaking it all to make it work.

I've successfully been able to make every single one work now and the feeling of accomplishment if pretty high.

The thing I didn't understand is that I wouldn't spend any time playing any of them. Basically boot them up, verify the play for a few minutes, exit out and set up the next one.

I used to play House of the Dead 2 for hours on my old Sega Dreamcast back in the day. Once I had it all emulated perfectly I went through the first mission. Man, it's bad. Boring. Outdated. Probably will never open it up again but I doubt I'll delete it.

So I guess now I'll start using the Steam Gaming Mode portion - you know, the thing we buy these for. Nostalgia is great, but for me personally it's not long-lasting. So much better stuff out there now.

But hey, the Steamdeck is awesome. Glad I have it.

Edit: I failed to give a shoutout to Dark Uni. He's an older guy like me and the way he explains things in his YouTube tutorials just jells with me well. So easy to follow. I highly recommend anybody with a brand new SteamDeck to follow his Dolphin Setup Tips and Tricks video. It's the best video I've seen on it. I cannot tell you how many times I've used the "Copy to Inactive Split View" and uncluttered left-hand panel side. Once that file system is set up correctly with this recommendations the file transfers and hundreds of edits you'll make to the files system are a breeze. It's a must-do before anything else.

Exactly as the title states. I tried to play Cod Cold War on my steam deck. 4 years later, I'm actually trying to grind for the dark aether camo and because I spend a lot of time away from my laptop which I usually play Cold War on, I wanted it on my steam deck so that I can grind for camos at pretty much anytime I want. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that Cold War was incompatible with steamOS. I uninstalled the game quickly after the game basically shut itself down and just played a quick game of zombies on my laptop as I usually do. Wake up this morning, my morning classes for college were canceled so I decided to hop on my laptop to play some Cold War only to find out I got banned. I submitted an appeal and hopefully I get unbanned and this is something most of y'all probably already know but do NOT try to play the newer Cod games on Steam Deck unless you have Windows installed or else you just wasted like $60 if you can't get unbanned
