I've noticed that different people have different power on/off behaviors. I turn the Steam Deck on, play for a couple of hours, and completely shut it down again. I only use the suspend feature when I have to pause a game for a few minutes to hours, but I am definitely gonna continue playing. Do you shut your Steam Deck down completely after each gaming session or do you just put it into energy saving mode?

Weekly News - # 2

(well, yeah, but with other news too)

Well after my last news post (GOG, Epic, emulation all on the Steam Deck), which you can find here if you'd like to read it I thought I might jump in on the next one early!

As with the last, and as ever with older ones I’ve posted elsewhere on reddit, these are just...my attempt to make fun game posts in the (attempted) style of the old gaming blogs I was never around to see, and the old gaming sites I wish I was around to read regularly. It’s JUST meant to be fun – lots of images and GIF’s, lots of news and games which have caught my eye. Or my attempt at all of that anyway!

After chatting with the (new) mod team here, I’ve got it sorted that I’ll post these weekly from now on. So that’s nice!

Just a word of warning though, this will be... very long and detailed. I have no ability to stop myself typing way too much, so read on only if you have a cup of tea or coffee handy (and some time!) <3

GOG AND KINGDOM COME

I wanted to mention "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" and the recent (unfortunate) news surrounding it.

KCD has become a favorite among gamers. I was ever aware of it but only recently dove in, quickly becoming both sucked into, and then quickly overwhelmed by its expansive world (this game is DETAILED!).

KCD feels to me like the perfect melting pot-blend of a medieval history library and bits from (or reminding you of!) Skyrim, The Witcher, Mount & Blade II, and Dark Souls—especially in its unforgiving combat; you gotta stay aware of your surroundings and mechanics at all times.

It’s arguably the most historically accurate simulation of medieval life, set in early 15th-century Bohemia with what felt to me like the world’s biggest in-game world. You start as a character with no reading skills, combat experience, or fitness, which felt to me like a true learning curve (and definition) of a simulation. For such a sim-like ‘RPG’, it has significant love online, especially for its horses, swords, and setting. It currently holds a "Very Positive" rating on Steam, with over 103,000 reviews.

But, we sadly saw a day or so ago that KCD (which has been available on GOG since day one) will have Denuvo DRM added to it for the upcoming sequel. So? Not going to be listed or sold on GOG.

I’ll get into what Denuvo DRM is next up, for anyone unaware, but having a game which was so incredible outspoken about being on GOG for their first release, and being all for gamers not having DRM (the dev team actually printed out the NFO for the first game and hung it up in their office), this is just a heavy bit of news.

Their studio, Warhorse, were bought by Plaion, which in turn is owned by the (notorious) Embracer Group, so it’s not so hard to see who is behind this decision. Suits. Still? Sad news in the GOG field to start with.

Sadly the announcement has been made official, but if you want a lil more of a peek, you can see even Steam Curators (like this one here!) have it listed as a Denuvo title.

NOW FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN’T KNOW WHAT ABOUT GOG AND DENUVO:

DENUVO:

Denuvo DRM is a digital rights management technology designed to protect video games from [illegal sharing] by limiting unauthorized access and copying – it protects the game against [illegal stuff]. Obviously it’s intended to safeguard developers' interests, but many PC gamers criticize it for several reasons.

• Denuvo can lead to performance issues,
• increased load times,
• even crashes in some cases.

Additionally, its presence often restricts legitimate users, making it harder to access and play their purchased games. This has caused frustration among gamers who feel that the measures taken to prevent [illegal stuff] ultimately hinder the very people supporting the game.

Denuvo DRM is now...everywhere. Well...almost everywhere.

GOG themselves are proudly 'DRM-Free': Denuvo and everything else, it’s a blanket statement – they are DRM free (and I know some of you there are furiously getting ready to type about GOG and Hitman...we’ll forget that one)

GOG believe that when you purchase a PC game from them it will have no digital rights management - that when you buy your game, you own it forever, not locked to a platform or storefront. This boils down to:

• Ownership and Control - you won't need to verify your ownership via an online connection regularly (RDR2, I'm looking at you via Steam for abusing this concept the worst), nor will you need a separate account or launcher to play
• Playing Offline - DRM-free games never require you to be online
• No 'client' dependency - unlike Steam, you don't need a client to play GOG games, you can play them directly
• Performance Benefits - it is no secret that something like Denuvo will impact performance on your game. There's no overhead from anti-[illegalstuff] checks to slow anything down

GOG FORUMS:

Another thing to keep in mind (just before I get to showing off the fun stuff: games from GOG on the Steam Deck!), if you have a Prime Gaming acc, and redeem them on GOG, then your GOG acc will also give you access to the GOG forums.

There’s a mix of thing to find there: nonsense ‘forum games’, but amongst that you get a ton of great news, give-aways, codes, GOG themselves post in there, developers discussing their games, new games, updates, and entire sub-forums on your fav franchises. I’ve just grabbed a lil collage of some of some which caught my eye, to give you an idea :)

GAMES FROM GOG I HAVE ENJOYED

~ I figured I'd go into the teeny-tiniest amount of detail on a few games I've played and loved on GOG recently, it's nothing hard-hitting, not a review, just my recommendations of a half-handful of games I've had a great time playing on my Steam Deck!

BIOSHOCK:

This week’s free game from Prime Gaming is Bioshock: Remastered! This one is SUPER exciting to me, since I adore Bioshock (like 99% of you here I’m sure!), though the third game, Infinite, is maybe my fav of the trilogy (like 2% of you here, I’m also sure!), and it’s so nice to see such big titles – regardless of their age, being given away!

I don’t think I need to even write a LITTLE on why Bioshock is one of the greatest games made, and best of all it aged really well.

And it’s NOT just a horror game. You’ve got heavy themes like the very nature of choice and free will, the idea of a Utopia built and fallen, the consequence of extreme individualism in a man-made and crafted society. The Art Deco setting made my design-heart fall in love: ornate architecture with its geometric shapes being ruined by a life underwater? UGH PERFECTION. Play this game right now! Claim it, and play it, I promise you it will make you fall in love.

October 11th, 2024 - Valve (Steam, Steam Deck, Half-Life, CS2) is excited to announce that Steam Deck will begin shipping to Australia in November 2024 (that's next month!)

We announced Steam Deck, a powerful hand-held gaming PC, in fall of 2021 and began shipping it the following March to North America, Europe, and (via KOMODO) to Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Hiya, for my 24th birthday I was thinking about getting a steam deck. I've had a steam account for years but I gain nothing from it because... I just don't like playing on the computer. I was raised on GameBoy Advanced, DS Lite, DSi... and got myself a Nintendo Switch in 2020 :)

I play Stardew Valley on my Switch and I've heard there's tons of Mods you can get on Steam. I've also been eyeing Fields of Mistria, which is in its early access right now, I believe. So as someone who only plays video games really casually... do you often get issues with crashing or bugs? Is the price worth it? Are there many unsupported games? (I just saw apparently Silent Hill 2 won't work on Steam Deck, safe to assume the same goes for Until Dawn then?)

And if you enjoy your Steam Deck (I would assume since we're on this sub) which games would you particularly recommend??

Sorry if this is the-most-asked-question on this sub, I'm kinda out of the loop with video games and technology these days and I wanna treat myself to something nice without many issues, if that makes sense. Thanks for helping out!!

Hey guys. Just recently bought the steam deck OLED. I am really impressed with the feel and power of this machine. The OS is also amazing.

Unfortunately I am one of those people that is bothered by the low pwm flicker on the OLED. This is the only OLED screen that has made my eyes strain and fatigue within 20 mins of usage.

I have used the OLED switch and my OLED TV with no trouble. I just recently got my eyes tested, so I know it’s not a vision issue.

So I’m wondering how much of a downgrade the LCD is compared to the OLED. I figured this would be the best place to ask because where I live, no one owns one and it is rare to see used ones go up on FB marketplace. Should I save my money and wait for the deck 2, or is the LCD still worth it?
