I ran into this today using ssh-copy-id on a new Debian box. Seems like that tool is biased toward copying a second key instead of a first. Either that or they assume most users use one key pair everywhere (and thus only have one loaded in their agent). I use one key pair per user per box. Excessive? ๐Ÿค”

I agree that this is a really important job. The wife and I usually enable subtitles on English content (our first language) any time accents are involved. Watched Shakespeare & Hathaway on BritBox recently and the English subs were glorious. They used a different background color for each character which I found extremely helpful, and the accuracy was quite good.

Sadly this is not universally true for Britbox content. Hartnell-era Doctor Who seems to be based on the scripts as it occasionally deviates significantly from the lines as delivered.

Father Brown is sort of middling and appears to be auto-generated in that the subs are mostly right but any errors are obviously homophonic and would have been caught with human review.

I guess "abide" (to bear patiently) and "endure" (to remain firm under suffering or misfortune without yielding) would both work, though neither has an inherent notion of time.

Patience. I think I just no longer have the energy to get that uptight about things. Benefits of being a quinquagenarian, it would seem. It should come with some damn benefits other than back and joint pain.

Breakfast bars. They're not just for breakfast!

I'm also partial to chips & salsa.

Margot was so awesome. Really loved that show.

Edit: Well, I loved the first three seasons, anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‘

Fucking hell. That's depressing.

I've slept since the last time I set up sshd on a new install. Do you need to be able to authenticate with a password when you ssh-copy-id on a user without a public key?

Edit: Silly me. Yes, password is required.

Their utter disregard for me as a person, as demonstrated in particular by the sudden violent outbursts and beatings, was not a great time. Probably the worst, though, was when they disowned me. They apparently didn't like what they had made.

I've been experimenting with going without the suggestion strip on my Android keyboard because I tend to hit that row (and a random unwanted word) occasionally on my relatively new Moto when thumb typing. This can cause problems in FF as it did for me today when I was writing a long-ish comment and accidentally hit the reading mode button in the right of the address bar (I have my address bar at the bottom) and of course flushed my comment to hell. It was a perfect storm of shit haha.

Might move to nightly so I can disable the reading mode button, assuming that's still possible. I've been on Android released for the last year or so.

Edit: BTW this happened on the photon front end. Not sure if you could run into this with default Lemmy. Edit #2: In first paragraph, I used both the terms "comment" and "post". I was referring specifically to commenting. Haven't noticed the reading mode button be available when writing a whole new post, but I comment more than I post.

Any other "gotchas" that you guys have encountered on mobile FF?

I know this will sound paranoid as fuck, but I've really been thinking about Microsoft lately. Like, they're pushing their Recall shit whether we like it or not. The fact that it even made it past the concept stage tells me that no one at Microsoft gives a single fuck about their users anymore. The final shreds of any trust I had in them as a company are gone and I've started thinking of them as an adversary.

Today I was considering Teams in particular. My company has been using it for maybe six years. When our email provider went teats up, I did some research and realized we had Microsoft cloud stuff included in our Action Pack subscription. We started using their email, and about the same time we started using Teams.

Teams offers EEE but only on Teams Premium, which we don't pay extra for. Microsoft has access to every message and chat. They could be saving transcripts and voice calls. They might have accumulated billions of hours of voice data by now.

What could they do with all this data?

  1. Sell to LEO
  2. Commit corporate espionage
  3. Gather government secrets
  4. Use for AI training

Something else just occurred to me. I did research a while back on the software stacks that big tech companies use. Not one uses IIS.

I've been a Windows developer for thirty years. I used to like Microsoft. I looked forward to new versions of Windows and Visual Studio. Now I feel like they've lured us all in slowly until we put our throats in their jaws. Fucking mental.

Talk me down, if you can.

Edit: Many thanks to @MrGerrit@feddit.nl for suggesting that I hold all three buttons down. That appears to have worked! ๐Ÿ™

Pixel 6 Pro. Yes, I did a factory reset after patching. No, I wasn't aware there was an issue. Yes, I understand there's no fix for this.

My question is, how do I turn off the phone once it is in this state? I've tried holding power alone, power + volume up, and power + volume down for varying periods of time up to 30 seconds each. I've tried in the recovery menu and at the error screen. I've tried catching it during the restart. Can someone help me please?

I have a UPS Ground prepaid label to return the cell phone that I'm trading. They told me it would be $10-12 to schedule a driver pickup, else I can take it to a dropoff location. When did this start? Boo, UPS. Boooooo.

Edit: To be completely fair, it may be that the destination decided not to pay extra for driver pickups rather than this being some new UPS thing. I don't know the inner workings.

"If you don't save your data to someone else's computer then we can't monetize it."

I know they're not explicitly selling SkyDrive or OneDrive or whatever it's called now, but they kinda are.

What's funny is, this file is stored in an encrypted container that does live in the cloud. ๐Ÿ˜„

Edit: Thanks to user @NoneYa@lemm.ee I now know about F12 in Office applications to bring up the "classic" Save As... dialog. Today I learned!

I have found the translation from camera source feature useful in Google Translate and I use it from time to time. Last night was one such occasion, yet when I attempted to enable camera mode, I received the message shown in the screenshot, "Please install the latest Google app in order to use camera translation". I currently have a Pixel phone and I have had the Google app disabled since shortly after I got it.

I left negative feedback on the Play Store after I discovered this new wrinkle as I feel Google thinks they have struck upon a way to prevent users from disabling or uninstalling the Google app. The developer responded that Translate camera is "now powered by Google Lens which is part of the Google app".

I have been struggling to remember another occasion where an app has been dependent on the presence of another app to function in either Android or iOS. Besides the obvious Google shittiness, I feel like introducing these sorts of application interdependencies opens the door to... idk, something bad.

Thoughts?

Edit: As I have noted in the comments, this is not a problem unique to the Google Pixel phone. If the Google app is disabled on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, the same behavior occurs.

Edit: Thanks all for the troubleshooting advice but this occurred on a channel that is known to me that regularly posts 4k HDR content. At the time I tried to play it, the video had 14k views and had been up for two days. It's probably just a transient thing. I mainly thought this was funny because I'd never seen such an anemic selection of resolutions. Perhaps you guys can try to enjoy the post in that spirit.

Edit #2: I know I said we weren't troubleshooting but if anyone wants to try it out, the video is here. I tried on my phone this morning and there are only the two crappy resolutions.

Edit #3: Credit to skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl here. I think they came the closest to explaining the problem. After I tried this on my phone, I tried it on the laptop and all resolutions with and without HDR were available. This may indicate that something like H.264 High Profile was used for encoding which (depending on the level) may not be supported on mobile device and it would seem, set top boxes like my Roku Ultra.

Edit #4: Some others had commented about the same problem in the video comments on YT so I told the content creator what I knew and (politely) asked how the video was compressed. Will report back if I get a response.

Edit #5: Clarified a point in Edit #3. Some mobile devices may support some levels of High Profile, or at least that's my understanding.

Final Edit: Creator did not respond to me directly but they indicated that they requested help from YouTube in the matter. Haven't checked the Roku yet but all resolutions are now available from my phone as of 2024-04-13T11:12:00.000 UTC.

A few years ago I got a Gorilla brand granite mortar and pestle. I seasoned it as directed and got quite a bit of use out of it, then I stopped cooking for a while and it got kind of...well, gross. It's possible that I spilled something on it, but portions of the bowl and exterior are a darker color now. I guess I'm afraid with the relatively porous granite that it's full of rancid garlic effluvium. Does anyone know how to clean this thing? Should I just pitch it?

This is the second such email I have received recently. Seems legit but I don't recognize the domain in the link to sign, and it seems like the people who make Firefox would know that the people who use Firefox would be hesitant to click. IDGI. Anyone else getting these?

Edit 2024-04-10: Got a new email today and it appears all the links now go to links dot mozilla dot org. I won't flatter myself that this post had anything to do with that, but maybe the same thought occurred to someone at Mozilla. Nice. โœŒ๏ธ

I was thinking instead of a /r/lostredditors that makes fun of bad posting choices there could be a community that could allow more experienced users to offer advice on the best community to post in. Maybe something slightly silly like...idk, /c/fedditorsearchparty?

I've had need of something like this more than once. For instance, I saw a cool little statue in an HDR walker video on YouTube recently. It was cute and made me happy and I wanted to share it, but I had no idea where to post it. There are so many communities across so many instances now.

Does this sound interesting or helpful? Or maybe something like this already exists!

Thanks in advance for your input. Have a nice weekend!
