A new "clean design" with all extraneous menus and buttons removed!

(Yes, this concept of "control everything through an AI" is just a command line, but worse. But that's not how the investors see it!)

Obviously this is a joke. That said, don't let anyone at M$ see this lest they get some crazy inspiration from this.

Back to a command prompt, but this time the command prompt randomly won't follow commands. But it also will pretend to suck you off sometimes.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

A command prompt that hallucinates. Truly the worst possible way to use a computer.

If you like the command line, you want it to actually fucking work consistently. If you don't like it, you're not going to like a text based interface that tries to fix the discoverability problem with a hallucination machine.

[–] Palacegalleryratio@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I love command lines that aren’t repeatable.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The consistency and "say this, computer does this", is literally the only upside to the command line interface. If you remove that part, you've created a completely useless interface.

The year is 2027, I type “word” into my Windows 12 Copilot edition and wonder what’s its response will be this time: will it define the term “word”? Will it open the web version of word on edge+copilot tm? Will it open the desktop word app? Or will it assume I’m saying “word” like the slang term popular in 90 rap and respond to me in kind as if I want a conversation?

I'd say the only way to use this without going tear-your-hair-out mad would be to use the chatbot to open a command prompt window and use that to actually do things, it'll be like going back in time to the DOS era, everyone using Windows will have to learn the terminal they're so afraid of Linux because of, but those chatbots are so damn inconsistent that I doubt they'd even consistently give you the command prompt window when you ask for one. Assuming that MS don't remove the option entirely, of course.

Everything is a joke until you are forced to use this monstrosity for 6 years in your work computer.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Productivity will plummet. And capital will blame lazy workers, and no one with power to ditch this buggy junk will identify it as part of the problem. Because that's what always happens when common work tools are enshittified.

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I literally have to fight my work laptop whenever I use it because of windows. Can't wait for it to get worse.

Hopefully I move to a company that gives me a MacBook.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Yep. Windows sucks. I've given up on it too. 🐧

If I had to deal with a Work Computer, I'd probably agree with you. Anything's gotta be better than Windows. And Unix-like is Unix-like, I guess, so some CLI stuff should work the same even if huge chunks of the system are different.

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Mac is like light years ahead of Windows in everything. CLI is great and the UI is uniform. It also runs smoothly. And the battery life is incredible, best in the world hands down.

[–] LadyCajAsca@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately that is true, if you had to pick between swallowing the windows or macos pill and can't install linux on them, macos would probably work out more

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Put in that situation by a workplace or other tightly controlled institutional setting, I'd probably moan, but mutter "at least it's Unix" and give it a fair shot.

[–] Shape4985@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And will run even worse. 32gb of ram minimum required

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

for anything other than light browsing that isnt far off relaity lmaooo

I bet you Windows 12 is going to make having a webcam to login mandatory. They already have the option of logging in through facial recognition since Windows 10. It's going to be like this:

Windows 12: Login through facial recognition is the default way to login, but there are ways to login via typing like before alongside other workarounds like using a drawing so you don't have to send your biometrics to Microsoft.

Windows 13: They will remove the option of typing and completely remove the workarounds. You will have to submit your biometrics to Microsoft to perform basic tasks on Windows.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

And there will still be people swearing up and down that Windows is the best option. Even if they don't use any Windows only software.

[–] Palacegalleryratio@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Forget the first ‘desktop os - with ai added in’, this is the first ‘AI only desktop os’! And your boss is going to love it.

[–] ethaver@kbin.earth 8 points 3 days ago

one of our sister hospitals is trialing an AI that records audio of you talking through your patient assessment then creates a flowsheet column automatically. it's opt-in / the patient has to agree to it and only keeps the recording until the nurse has validated the data but it does seem strange to me.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yep. You, a sane and normal person, might not like it, but your boss, who avoids computers like the plague anyway, will think it's ever so cool.

[–] Enternasyonal@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Already kind of switched to linux mint because of how shitty windows 11 is, if this is true I am going to quit windows completely

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

Glad to hear it. Recovery is possible. There is life after Microsoft Windows. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

[–] socphoenix@midwest.social 17 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That looks like someone being over the top expecting management to get mad lol. I really hope that’s not seriously being considered.

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago

I think this is a joke. I hope this is a joke.

[–] rubber_chicken@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

Microsoft would never release something this uncluttered. All that screen real estate cries out for the Windows 8 tiles.

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I used to joke about this but these kind of jokes just manifest into reality through capitalist magick

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

It's the technology version of "the trouble with political jokes is that they get elected".

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You can do everything with voice commands and eye tracking, and it will work how you want it to 75% of the time!

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

75% is a generous estimate.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] insurgentrat@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

it's misinformation, like half the shite on lemmy ╮(︶▽︶)╭

[–] ephemeral@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] insurgentrat@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

No, it's not.

It it fictitious and mocking yes, but it is presented as if it were real and makes claims that it is.

Many people are responding as if it is. This is misinformation.

As a lifelong Linux user, windows is fine.

Linux isn't for everyone and acting like its end all be all is dishonest as fuck. Let folks use what they use and quit bellyaching about what others choose to use.

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

As a lifelong Linux user, windows is fine.

You haven't touched recent iterations of Windows if you think Windows is fine. And why would you? You are a lifelong Linux user after all.

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Windows was fine.

It's become a nightmare for casual users in many aspects. Even without advocating for Linux, saying the current Windows is "fine" is very far from the truth.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah. I used to really like Windows, you know. XP was great. Then it started going downhill.

[–] musicpostingonly@hexbear.net 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lot of folks on this website upset because others don't use what they want them to use.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

i'm upset we have an effective monopoly from a us corporation that is now screenshoting everything you do on your pc, just made millions of machines obsolete, and makes their product worse with every iteration. and ads.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah. My problems with Windows are ideological and geopolitical, not just technical. I am a communist outside the US but still in their sphere of influence. To use a piece of known spyware made by a US company on a device I use to connect to the Internet and talk to other leftists, and to do my hobbyist fiction writing with a leftist bent, is a terrible idea. So I refuse to do so. Plenty of better and safer options that also respect me as the only user and system administrator far more. Do I think I'm important enough for personal opsec to matter? Of course not. Am I going to take reasonable precautions anyway, especially ones that cost me nothing/are good excuses for generally better habits I was going to strive for anyway? Of course I am.

[–] optissima@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I dont disagree about letting users have choice, but it's disingenuous to claim that they are choosing if they are only being told there is only one choice and never being shown any of the other options.

[–] musicpostingonly@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This post is not an informative post on Linux. This post exists solely to rag on windows and windows users. Your point is moot.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

rag on windows

the correct take then. gotta break the idea microsoft is the only choice.

besides, linux gets better the more estabilished it is.

[–] Midnight_Pearl@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

literally how is it ragging on windows users? where in this post does it say that you're bad and wrong and stupid if you use windows?

ragging on the mediocre ad-ridden product of a spyware-making, zionazi-supporting monstrosity corporation is good and based actually and you don't need to take it personally on behalf of people who use it. hell, windows users themselves complain about it more than we do at this point.

I would love to have a totally different OS option than Linux. That would be great. MS took that from me.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

I know that. I'm not saying everyone should have to use Linux or even that it's often a better option these days (although I do think that's true, at least for my personal computing needs). I'm just ragging on Windows because it's done a few idiotic things of late, which I've had to hear about because ~99% of my social circle uses the damn thing.
