It's honestly disgusting how much "curing cancer" is exploited by powerful organizations and people to prey on the enormous suffering most people have experienced from cancer. Joe Biden promised to cure cancer in his presidency, then never followed up on it or mentioned it again. All these AI hucksters promised they would cure cancer with their AI, and we will never see that manifest into anything either because it was hot air to get investment hype. The more painful and destructive something is, the more capitalists can milk it for profits while maintaining the suffering and pain and attempting to sell an escape from it. They are actively dis-incentivized to cure cancer, that would be a massive profit loss. They need cancer to exist forever.

curing cancer would be a short-term profit spike so they'd go for it because fuck long term anything that's the next CEO's problem.

the real issue is that cancer isn't one thing it's 100 different things that need 100 different "cures" so the whole thing was empty from the beginning, no conspiracy required.

Maybe someday there will be a true cure for cancer but it'll probably be some wild shit like retroviruses programmed to attack specifically your own cancer cells to turn on the apoptosis switch again. Modern therapies have come a really long way but it's still like using a sledgehammer to do brain surgery.

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

there are crispr based therapies out right now that are tailored to the patients DNA like you say but it's for specific cancers and really expensive.

The horny chatbot bit is just an excuse to steal every last bit of your personal info (age verification).

They will be deporting based on how (un-)wholesome your fetishes are.

i've discovered the cure for cancer and it's a new digital coin 🚀

[–] adultswim_antifa@hexbear.net 44 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

OpenAI is spending $400 billion over the next 4 years to build homes (data centers) for horny chat bots while your landlord jacks up 🫵your🫵 rent.

[–] volcel_olive_oil@hexbear.net 27 points 3 weeks ago

war economy to make the computer horny

[–] prole@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Also the electricity for those data centers is subsidized by increasing the cost of electricity for residential consumers AND they're still gonna paywall your new waifu

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago

Wont someone think of the unhoused horny chatbots?

[–] fox@hexbear.net 37 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Imagine if instead of pouring a trillion dollars into making computers that only tell lies we put a trillion dollars into curing cancer

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah but I cant ERP with the cancer cure so who is to say whats a better use of ressources.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

you dont now that, what if the cure for cancer is a horny sentient retrovirus?

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 29 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

What if the horny chatbots know how to cure cancer

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What if being horny could cure cancer?

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago

cancer would've been eradicated millenias ago if that was the cure

our case of horny is deeper in our genes than cancer ever could be

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

I nutted just right and now that one lump is gone

[–] pancake@lemmygrad.ml 28 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is the bottleneck in cancer research intelligence though? Like, even if you had infinite mindpower available at near-zero cost, you'd still have to do basically the same amount of lab work. And that would cost basically the same amount of money and time.

[–] WildWeezing420@hexbear.net 37 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

AI cultists believe they can simulate lab experiments digitally

[–] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Just simulate an entire universe with checks notes a chatbot that would never get anything wrong whatsoever

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is literally a world building thing in the SciFi TTRPG Lancer.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

Also the plot of Foundation

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 20 points 3 weeks ago

Just different priorities

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 20 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

For anyone who cares, perchance allowed you to gen spank images and horny chat with bots like 3 years ago.

[–] WildWeezing420@hexbear.net 25 points 3 weeks ago

yeah but now you can do it in the middle of your workday while vibe coding

[–] Des@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

it feels slightly more ethical to use their horny chatbots because it's probalbly running on some Russian guy's GPU rack
