Extremely.

But he was also narcissistic enough to basically drop hints the whole time, even as he actively hides. While he knows he needs to stay hidden, he yearns for everyone to know that he is Kira, and to worship him for what he is doing.

He wants to openly taunt his detractors while never giving them actual evidence, but that's stupid as fuck.

Ha nailed the lie to start, but fucked himself because of his arrogance and ego.

Yup, it’s basically the same character arc as Walt in Breaking Bad. Dude causes his own downfall due to pride and ego. If he had just kept his head down and focused on his goal, he would have gotten away with it. But he couldn’t leave well enough alone, and had to keep dropping hints like the zodiac killer.

You could say Light and Walt were both victims of the plot.

The version of their stories where they are both egoless individuals who keep their heads down, take no risks, and never get found out by anyone would not be very entertaining.

I think a shorter version of Breaking Bad where Walt is successful in his original apparent goal would be quite entertaining, but obviously there's no way they keep it up for that many seasons.

Yes, but his hubris and ego had him make stupid and sloppy mistakes.

If anyone other than L started that investigation, Light would have won.

Tap for spoilerDidn't R also investigate him and was the only that ultimately made him snap?

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

spoilerYes but only based on L's prior investigation IIRC

Ok, that's fair. It has been well over a decade since I watched the anime.
