It's not really Plato that's saying that, he's attributing it to his teacher, Socrates. Who was not his wife.

'teacher', in fact, is a pointer that the person may have been an older man that topped the pupil. Yes, in a gay sex way.
We don't even really know whether Sokrates was an actual person or made up by Platon though, let alone anything else.
There other sources on Socrates, so it's not disputed he was a actual person.
