Please Nintendo do your thing

They won't.

Nintendo are famous for making examples out of people who do not have the means to fight back in court. Say what you want about Trump, but he's the king of stalling for time in court, and in this case, he has an unlimited amount of taxpayer money to fight his legal battles, and he has an unusually strong grip on the judiciary, so Nintendo could still conceivably lose the court case if they get assigned to a MAGA judge.

This will be the end of it. They've divorced themselves from the DHS shenanigans and that's all they were obligated to do in the interest of protecting their brand.

I think you are right. Pathetic scumbags over at Nintendo.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 7 points 19 hours ago

I but don't worry if you add Pikachu to your short YouTube video saying how it had a profound impact on your life they'll be sure to sue you right to the poorhouse.

[–] Feyd@programming.dev 182 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is most likely the totality of their response.

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (7 children)

Bro why does nobody here have faith on Nintendo's legal team's capacity to sue people 😭

[–] justOnePersistentKbinPlease@fedia.io 87 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Supposedly, as per the pokemon company's former chief legal officer: most of their executives in the US are there on green cards and are likely worried about losing them if they move legally on this.

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They can at least DMCA the post, I guess?

[–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 51 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And our petty government wouldn't respond by revoking those green cards?

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (6 children)

And you think Nintendo wouldn't be petty enough to bring this to the media AND threaten to leave the US? Trump's a fucking pussy. If the legal Nintendo team even implied they'd leave the country he would chicken out. We're talking about the orange TACO here.

[–] Capricorn_Geriatric@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Trump cares very little for Nintendo (which doesn't mean he's not a pussy).

He got Hyundai and LG to pull out. Y'know, the people who took his bait and fulfilled his mercantilistic desires by actually building a manufacturing plant in the US.

AFAIK Nintendo of America doesn't produce any hardware. They just translate, publish and sell software (and sue over IP).

These things don't contribute to the economy in Trump's eyes, so he'll most likely do even more damage if Nintendo ever ends up on the chopping block.

[–] tryagain@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 hours ago

You know, if any of the younger members of the adminstration have registered accounts, Nintendo could do the funniest thing ever to their Switch 2s.

[–] Jerkface@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

They have virtually nothing to gain and everything lose. They won't do anything.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago

They can do all that for some virtue signaling, or do nothing and profit as usual. How does this look like a hard decision to make?

You think capitalists care about anything other than money? Lmao

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 8 points 1 day ago

Ok so let's say that they do threaten that and Trump does back down. Nintendo have gained nothing by doing this and have pissed off the dictator. Not a financially sound move really.

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

No, I don't because they are bullies and bullies don't go after people who fight back.

[–] x4740N@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

To be fair i kind of agree with Nintendo on this knowing the abuses going on in detention centres of people ice detain from the news.

No one should be subjected to that and I'm not excusing Nintendos behaviour with copyright trolling and legal bullying by stating this

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Nintendo are not a company that go after people that can fight back. They are bullies just as much as the current administration, the best that they would be able to do would be to get DHS to pull video, there's no way they'd get compensation for this so they really don't care.

[–] lemjukes@sopuli.xyz 24 points 1 day ago

There is a big difference between issuing takedowns to small YouTubers doing lets play content, or garnishing the wages from a pirate for the rest of his life, and picking a fight with DHS when you’re a foreign company and there’s a dictator in office.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because that not how facism works. You dont sue the fuhrer.

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

No, but they can threaten to leave the country for Canada if ICE threatens their employees. Given that Trump has an obsession with "companies manufacturing in America" he would probably chicken out.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Or they can do nothing and rake in the money. Lmao

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

This is a toy company. In America. they ain't leaving shit. and why even would they? it was a tweet. ya'll gotta stop treating twitter like it's legally binding just because a while ago it was easy to bully somebody into making a flaccid apology video. No toy company is going to spend money in a court room on that, the legal team is for handling individuals smaller than Nintendo

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Nobody is questioning the capacity

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 day ago

Because Trump has being giving them a free ticket of corrupt and inept judges in US patent courts to award them absolutely bullshit control over game mechanics and concepts they didn't create.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Because I have more faith in the legal team being cowards and not going after the government than I do them actually doing something about it.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 21 points 1 day ago

They sound not so eager to sue this time though, they sound unapproving but intimidated.

[–] ragingHungryPanda@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com 45 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

my low effort contribution

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 29 points 1 day ago

".... But we're gonna do fuck all about it"

Sue them and use pressure like you did against Yuzu & Citra.

Otherwise, go frag yourself.

[–] TehBamski@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] x4740N@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Does anyone actually know the original source of the gif, I want to watch the original scene

[–] EtherWhack@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I say, grab that version, swap the ICE clips with other stuff and use it like it's public domain. (with throwaway accounts, of course)

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And if they don't like it tell em "My taxes paid for the DHS version. My rights to fair use allow me to create transformative works. And my own labor made it so."

^and still get a C&D^

[–] baggins@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why hasn't Nintendo sued yet? It's most likely because they actually support this use of their IP.

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 day ago

A Japanese company not shying away from fascism?

-surprised Pikachu face-

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did they mention anywhere that they didn’t like it?

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

The statement itself seems to be legalese for "DHS will hear from us and we are not happy".

[–] primrosepathspeedrun@anarchist.nexus 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'll believe it when i see it.

Edit: I bet Nintendo's entire board makes yukio Mishima look like a moderate.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It sounded to me like they were going to do nothing, but just wanted people to know they didn’t make it in case they were curious.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah. If they were going to sue legal team advice would have been: "Shut the fuck up until we get all the evidence."
