Ryan Walters, Oklahoma’s public schools superintendent, said Monday that any teacher coming from the two blue states will be required to pass an assessment exam administered by PragerU, an Oklahoma-based conservative nonprofit, before getting a state certification.

PragerU is going to be one of the largest providers of privatized education curriculum in the US over the next five years

I actually have a tad bit of hope. This reminds me of the Mormon cult, and I’ve known several who have managed to escape

I'm sorry, have you met Americans?

[–] Hohsia@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Key word here is reasonable

[–] No_Bark@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 months ago

I do not share in this optimism. We're talking about the American public here.

JokerU jokerfication But but privatization always good.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 57 points 2 months ago (3 children)

so let me guess they will administer this test to at MOST 1 or 2 prospective teachers a year, im guessing more like 0

the state has shit pay for teachers, no prospects.

i guess this is to trip up the 1 teacher partner of someone transferring there from the coasts for a natural gas job contract??

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 32 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It doesn't matter if this will only hit 1 or 2 people per year. If it gets implemented in one state it'll spread to elsewhere. Putting it in a state where the least resistance will occur first is perfect for then spreading it elsewhere, PragerU will be pointing to the "success" in this state when their lobbying brings it forward to other states. They will spread conservative control of educational personnel this way. Controlling personnel will enable controlling education itself.

They will slice the onion.

I believe it's also a way to weaken labor's power. If I can fire you arguing you lied on your ideology test without question, the teacher's union suddenly has way less power.

Doens't Oklahoma have such bad teacher pay that people are leaving for fucking Texas? And the state has cut school funding so much that some schools have to go to a 4 day school week, because they literally can't pay a teacher to work 5 days a week, despite teachers making a pittance

Looks like they are hoping to preserve that ranking or descend further.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Question these rankings there's no way Mississippi isn't last just based on funding and access. Certainly worse than Texas

How many people are moving to Oklahoma to earn their poverty teacher wages?

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 45 points 2 months ago (1 children)

nobody's probably doing it on purpose, but I can imagine a scenario where a teacher moves there because their partner got a better paying job, and gets rejected from teaching for some milquetoast moderate position like believing gay people should be allowed to get married

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago

like believing gay people should be allowed to ~~get married~~ exist

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

i wonder what caused the "standards" to rise between 1800-1850 (the golden age of artistic standards). i mean we all know Manet is responsible for the slump in the late 1800s, when he painted sex workers and refused to pretend they were paintings of greek goddesses, and it's obvious the plateau in the 1920s was because Dali was ok but a bit weird, and then of course that darn Jackson Polock made it all come crashing down by making paintings that DON"T LOOK LIKE ANYTHING rage-cry but what happened in the 1840s to raise the standards? i'm going to assume it's some whitebread american landscape painter

It's gonna work, after all people, especially people who interact with kids on the daily, are physically incapable of lying.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

I hope some prospective teacher sues and gets rich.
