Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

I love the burger brain consensus on this

Apparently it's deserved because they're not self sustaining and require government funds to operate

But the MIC isn't self sustaining and neither is freeway widening yet everyone's quiet

Fuck this country lol everyone got the intelligence of a boiled peanut

amerikkka

smuglord “If public transit was free, people would just abuse it and drive up maintenance costs for the taxpayer.”

pronounjak “What do you mean I have to pay a toll to cross this bridge!? This is highway robbery, we’re living in 1984 vuvuzela!”

It’s just like the endless complaining about Oklahoma‘s toll roads that is never not funny to me

No love lost for NPR but PBS is a kick in the teeth. The kids programming is excellent, diverse, and most importantly safe, and my kids enjoy it immensely. You can turn a kid loose to watch PBS kids in a way you can't with private services or god forbid YouTube. It was also one of the only free sources of streaming entertainment for low income folks who rely on this content more than anyone.

In the grand scheme of empire horrors my kid not being able to watch Molly of Denali is not that big of a deal, but for sure is one I will feel personally. But that pales in comparison to the impact on indigenous kids in Alaska who will lose perhaps their only instance of representation.

Shit sucks.

Not to mention the loss of funding for local public radio stations that are the only source of critical information in many rural areas.

What a cruel and evil place this is.

frothingfash I demand that my children be indoctrinated into the cult of consumerism every 3-5 minutes (and if the "content" could also be selling things that would be great). And besides, without Ad companies' unerring moral compass dictating what they see, how can I feel comfortable leaving my children unsupervised in front of a screen for hours at a time?!

You see what a society truly values with stuff like this. It is not simply that our society does not value safe and educational children's entertainment. Our society values the opposite. It values their undereducation. It values their underenrichment. And the quantity of that value will appear in certain bank accounts following these cuts. We could track it all down and attach a very real price tag, if we wanted. That we paid. To deprive children.

Awesome society great job

Fucking grim. This is kind of the final fall of any concessions the capitalists made to the proletariat in the face of the existence of the USSR and the threat of socialism at home. They've decided we're not a threat and there's no need to placate us. This isn't even a case necessarily of making the line go up by stripping the copper out of the walls as most people with money will subscribe to a streaming service or cable anyways, as it's free. It's paid for with unlimited US dollars which can be expended at no meaningful cost. Next up libraries I'm sure. We're going back to workhouses. And I can't help but feel some of this is part of a push to have an uneducated, indoctrinated, poor, desperate population that can be pressed without much resistance into signing up for war with China as a soldier as a chance to escape the spiral of poverty and pain. And as I've said I don't think the war with China will be anything but a world war. It won't be US troops marching into China. It will be US troops attacking the Sahel states and toppling them to install a comprador loyal to western capital. It will be them doing piracy on the high seas against Chinese shipping under an "embargo" and fighting the PLA there if they resist. It will be a wide-ranging conflict that could be low or high intensity.
