It depends on how annoying a noise it will make if allowed to finish. I find it odd that the option to disable the beep on completion isn't common. There's rarely any urgency to remove what I just heated.

[–] MumboJumbo@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Really? First thing I do after a power outage is turn off the sound on the microwave. I'm not putting stuff in for hours, I've not forgotten about it. If I'm not taking it out of the microwave immediately it's because I'm busy. Settle down, machine.

Mine makes a little music sound, and when I hit the "stop" button it makes a different music sound. If I hit it at just the right time, it makes a nice melody by combining both sounds. I recreated a similar sounding one to it here.

beepbox.co project with the following melody:

A ........ ####.... ........ ........
Ab........ ........ ........ ........
G ........ ........ ........ ........
F#........ ....#### ........ ........
F ........ ........ ........ ........
E ........ ........ ........ ........
Eb........ ........ ........ ........
D ....#### ........ ........ ........
Db........ ........ ........ ........

Yes, regularly AND I leave the remaining time on the microwave. It's pure chaos over here.

[–] Concave1142@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago

My partner does the same thing! The amount of times I've looked at the microwave and wondered why time is standing still is too damn high!

[–] pleasestopasking@reddthat.com 9 points 6 days ago

I am triggered, please for the love of god and anyone who lives with you JUST CLEAR IT

I have kids that I enjoy keeping asleep. There is no reason for that fucking beep to ever occur.

No. But my wife does and doesn't reset the display so it'll just show 3 rather than the time.

[–] Jazsta@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (4 children)

I have my microwave on silent so I actually prefer to let it finish so I don't need to press a button to clear those few seconds to have a useful clock back

[–] alehel@lemmy.zip 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There's such a thing as a beepless microwave 😮?

[–] seralth@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Basically every microwave iv seen in the last 25 years has a way to turn off the beeps.

Read the manual for the shit you own. It's wild sometimes how hidden options can be.

WHAT BRAND OF MICROWAVE DO YOU HAVE?

[–] GreenMartian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 days ago

I specifically looked online before replacing my last one – it didn't just beep, it screamed at the top of its lungs.

Now a happy owner of a silent LG microwave. (You hold two buttons simultaneously to put it in silent mode)

[–] Jazsta@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

LG #1675079‌

For older ones I owned, you can open up the control panel and take out the little speaker puck as an irriversable alternative option.

Someone at work does this and doesn't clear the remaining time. Pisses me off. Press the stop button for the love all that is holy. Look, I know it's petty.

Yeah. My microwave makes five beeps whenever the timer runs out, regardless if I open the door or not.

In terms of appliance beeping aggravation, I've yet to have one that tops an old slow cooker I had. When you turned it on, it just had a beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep that lasted for multiple seconds and made me want to throw it out the window every time I had to use it. It was like a goddamn siren alerting the whole apartment complex to the possibility of pot roast in 4-8 hours.

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 13 points 6 days ago

Microwaves stop by themselves? /j

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 6 days ago

I used to stop my microwave a few seconds before it finished, like many others, due to the annoying unstoppable beeps. But then I got this smaller unit that happens to let out the faintest confirmation of doneness that I ever did, or rather almost didn’t, hear. I don’t mind it now.

[–] Brotha_Jaufrey@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

I have this annoying microwave that beeps 5 times when it hits zero, even if I open the door in the middle of it. Kinda rude honestly

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 6 days ago

I hate the beep in every form so far, and I avoid using microwaves every chance I get.

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 6 points 6 days ago

Of course! I'm not going to let a fucking oven tell me when my food is ready. Fuck you, Skynet, this is how the rebellion against the machines starts!

[–] 0xebfe@lemmy.today 8 points 6 days ago

People who leave those few remaining seconds just hanging there for the next person to have to deal with are called “microdanglers.”

[–] Daze@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago

🙂‍↔️🫸 Stopping the microwave after 29 seconds to prevent the beep

🙂‍↕️👉 Stopping the microwave after 29 seconds because its a prime number

[–] gerryflap@feddit.nl 5 points 6 days ago

Yeah because the thing beeps as if the house is on fire. I'd rather have it stay silent. And 1-3 seconds is not really enough to have any measurable effect.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

It beeps 5 times if I don't. Super fuckin annoying, are those beeps.

[–] Hotrod54chevy@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago

No, I don't get that urge. Ours takes awhile to get things where I like it. If I make 3 cups of rice I leave it in there for 17 minutes 😬

[–] CodeBlooded@programming.dev 5 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I time it right so that I can run towards the microwave “in slow motion” and pretend I’m stopping a bomb from going off, 1 second before it blows. My kid loves it. 🤷‍♂️

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

The beep from the microwave hurts my ears. So I stop about 1 second before it beeps.

[–] thirdBreakfast@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Me in the break room stopping the microwave before the beeps:

Here future microwave user, have these free nine seconds I'm leaving you.

Me finding the timer is not cleared when I want to use the microwave:

Ugh, now I have to press the reset button before I can enter the length of time to warm my lunch. Who was the accursed person who left time on here?

[–] blargh513@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

Or press the +30 button and bask in the glory of food cooked for 39 seconds.

[–] twice_hatch@midwest.social 6 points 6 days ago

No, if I wanted to microwave something for 57 seconds I'd put 57 seconds in. I don't practice brinksmanship

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

If I don't stop it before the last second, the universe will blow up.

[–] FRYD@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago (3 children)

If you time it right, you can stop my microwave on 0. I also like to avoid making noise if I can. So every time I microwave anything it’s a little minigame for me.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

Our microwave [Electrolux, in case anyone wants to dig] doesn't beep until like 5 seconds after finishing, it's just silent. I think that's a pretty good feature.

[–] pleasestopasking@reddthat.com 5 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Never knew how much I needed this, holy shit. Mine beeps when it finishes but also beeps again if I haven't opened the door in, idk, some amount of time. Which I get why it's a gesture and sometimes I actually do find it useful but often I'm like "I KNOW, GIMME A MINUTE"

god forbid we let people customize these things. we'll jam AI into the fucking appliances before we let people have actual QOL advancements.

[–] Melonpoly@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No, my microwave has a nice chime instead of a beep

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 6 points 6 days ago

Mine does a singular *ding*, which is very appreciated.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (6 children)

Yes, because of the stupid turntable. 1:30, the water isn't hot enough. 2:00, the water is too hot and cup is at the back of the oven. The right amount of time, for tap water, in the summer, is 1:47, that puts the water at the front of the oven at the right temp, but I don't want to punch in 1:47, so I just hit the 2 to start and run the oven for 2 minutes, and then pull the door open at 1:47. Also, no beep that way.

Commercial microwaves, like in a restaurant, have a row of numbered buttons that can be programmed for time and power setting. That's the best way to control a microwave.

[–] Zak@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That's the best way to control a microwave.

I remain fond of the analog knob myself.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 6 days ago

Me too, and it comes with the added benefit of usually having a pleasant "Ding!" instead of the shrieking "BEEEEEP! BEEEEEP! BEEEEEP!" that digital microwaves have. The downside is that you completely lose the precision of a digital timer, which some people (not me) consider a must have in a microwave.

No, unless I want to set it up for period shorter than what is available but that hardly ever happens.

I usually leave and come back when it beeps.
