The concept itself is disguising

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 52 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I read an interesting piece that said that they got enough "dad takes the son there to try to shake off that rainbow aura" traffic that a lot of the waitresses recognised the pattern and learned to be supportive. Unexpectedly wholesome.

Still less disappointing than visiting Dick's Sporting Goods.

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 days ago

Dick's Sporting Goods probably has better food

[–] TheWolfOfSouthEnd@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I might find I don’t want to go there…but can you elaborate on what “rainbow aura” means, please?

[–] Xavienth@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dads taking their gay sons to Hooters to try to make them straight

[–] TheWolfOfSouthEnd@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Thank you for answering. It’s exactly what I thought it would be and exactly what didn’t want to know it was. Unconditional love is just too much, apparently.

a real threat to alpha male culture. sad to see it happen like this. now the wokes will do a cultural appropriation and make femboy hooters.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

femboy hooters

implying we wont be able to just buy the trademark for pennies on the dollar and make this dream into regular hooters

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

You jest, but I would pay to see dems appropriate chud culture and make it look lame (or at least lame to chuds).

GENTRIFY 4CHAN, DAMMIT!

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago (5 children)

apparently hooters has a kids menu. I biden-alert after learning this fact, trying to figure out any scenario in which a child enters the breasturant. i guess i don't know enough about straight male US culture, but i thought hooterinos was for divorced dads and for like bowling teams of middle aged dudes and such... apparently you can take your kid there so they can eat nuggets and ketchup while dad has an erection looking at university students' gahonkas

[–] sweet_pecan@hexbear.net 2 points 14 hours ago

my dad took my mom there for mothers day with us

[–] muirc@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

My parents used to take me to Hooters all the time. I remember hula hooping with the waitresses. What a strange fucking thing.

[–] BanSwitch2Buyers@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I get that Hooters is framing things in a male-gazey way but if it's OK to take a child to the beach it's probably mostly OK to take them to Hooters. At least in terms of attire. Unless Hooters has some weird shit the hosts gotta' do that I'm unaware of.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago (2 children)

maybe i don't really "get" hööters because i've never been and don't know anyone who's been and lived most of my life in hooter-free countries, but i thought the point of it was it's a sports bar-type place where dudes can get horny and eat junk food and drink beers. it's not like a family restaurant, right?

i don't have a problem with kids seeing bodies or skimpy clothing, but more with kids being in horny spaces

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

these places like to pretend they are not what they are, to cast a wider net with the blurred boundaries. but only fools and the willing are fooled. in the US we have several coyly-sexualized places. restaurants like Hooters and that haircut place "Knockouts", though I am sure there are more.

some guys would take their kids to strip clubs if under 18 wasn't forbidden. they would say the human body is natural and nothing to be ashamed of while they pay some 19 year old in lingerie (with bruises and a 40 year old coke dealing pimp) to grind on their athletic shorts as the kid eats bacon from the listeria-infested breakfast bar.

the hospitality industry here is insane across the board and harbors merchants of misery who will pander to the most unscrupulous weirdo with money, if allowed.

dudes who bring their young kids to sexualized hospitality joints in a capitalist country rife with worker exploitation are absolutely on one, and they always have eye rolling explanation for why they do it.

And before some mod-adjacent sancho tries to cancel my ass: I oppose Hooters existing and I oppose femboy Hooters existing, which is a more socially progressive stance than half of the treatlers on the site.

[–] hexaglycogen@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

but what if i want to wait tables at femboy hooters just for fun without the profit motive can i do that

[–] BanSwitch2Buyers@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Once you get past the uniforms, it is just a regular place. I remember going there with my parents for no other reason than they were hungry and it was the only place open in the area at the time. I was uncomfortable, because of its reputation and my puritanical hangups as a kid (despite being raised Catholic). But like, genuinely with all the casinos and bars my mom frequented, it really was just about grabbing food and a beer.

And if you have issues about people objectifying waitstaff, I have some bad news about the service industry as a whole. The horror stories seem about equal in their frequency.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah Hooters gets away with so much of what they do (did?) thanks to the fact that women in almost any service industry role are treated the same if not worse, but with the thin veneer of modesty.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The whole redpill culture is literally “this is what women like, do these things and be this much of an asshole and women will think ur sexy!”

For any youngish men who are lurking and considering that manosphere advice? Take this advice free of charge: consider twinkmaxxing.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Try also: be-a-decent&respectful-humanmaxxing

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Of course, but being the guy who fixes an evil twink…hyperflush.

[–] Lyudmila@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Despite being a joke to younger people, somehow Hooters was doing fine financially.

The bankruptcy and these closures are just a private equity firm doing what they do best. Do a Leveraged Buyout, rip the copper out of the walls, then file for bankruptcy on the debt you took on to do the leveraged buyout.

The same company is also doing this with PF Chang's, TGI Friday's, and Claire's.

[–] MayoPete@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh no, where will 6 year olds go to get their ears pierced 😢

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Didn't know PF Changs started doing that

[–] MayoPete@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Those Kung Pow Shrimp Skewers are $14.99 for a reason 👀

[–] Lyudmila@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

I'm truly torn between let-them-fight and shrug-outta-hecks

Private equity is just hollowing out everything and I don't know how to feel about it anymore.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

yeonmi-park In America, there are no big booba chicken wing places because private equity destroys all culture

[–] The_Filthy_Commie@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 days ago

Imagining a bit where there's a booba enthusiast having a discussion with an anime tiddy gooner, and the booba guy is hailing Hooters as the last bastion of real awooga that is under threat from AI sludge where every character has the same face but different hairs with same size tiddies.

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 39 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

They're just making way for femboy furry hooters

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Sell vegan hot wings and I'd be there

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

i've heard the nuggets are pretty much indistinguishable, those brands should open restaurants and not be loud about being vegan.

[–] TheWolfOfSouthEnd@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

I’ll come for moral support. And vegan hot wings.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

Don't worry Canadians, Hooters Canada is owned by a different entity and remains solvent.

[–] buh@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

They have Universal Hooters while we have to live with privately owned for-profit Hooters

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

olympus has fallen

i went to one once a long time ago because my partner wanted to. it was just weird, the food was mid, and the, uh, hooters were not as advertised. service was fine, would've had a better time at chilis or tgif or whatever.
