Sounds promising. Are Waymo still reliant on up-to-date high resolution maps? The article doesn't mention it, but that would seeem like one of the main challenges preventing a wider rollout.

Yes that's true. They still map out every intersection, sign, signals etc. Probably it's much safer for a L4 system to have HD maps when compared to a L2 driver-assist.

Interesting how companies' approaches to solving autonomy differ. Tesla's eschewal of HD maps has enabled an early wide rollout of their FSD Supervised, but that system is only around L2 or L3.

It will be interesting to see which approach represents is the best route towards developing a broadly applicable L5 system.
