It seems America and the rest of the world may look very different in the 2030s.
The rest of the world living in the future with EVs and cheap renewable energy. America in some strange steampunk version of the future, where energy is expensive, everyone still drives huge gasoline cars, and power stations still belch smoke from coal.
Cheap Chinese EVs that cost <$20k and run on cheap renewable electricity, frequently from home solar, will likely be rapidly becoming the global norm in the 2030s. I wonder if the fossil fuel industry has home solar in its sights, too? They have all the American politicians in their pockets that they need to ban it in the US.
Trump says U.S. will not approve solar or wind power projects
Trump administration halts work on an almost-finished wind farm
Renewable energy = cheap, low profits
Fossil fuels = expensive, higher profits
It's really that simple. Add to that the people breathing in toxic fumes require more trips to the doctor and hospital stays, so more profits for healthcare.
These people only care about profit.
healthy citizens make more money and pay more tax. the profit ratio on renewables is through the fucking roof.
framing everything through the lens of capitalism is what they want you to do, these people only want power and are willing to burn tremendous amounts of wealth in order to obtain and maintain it.
With cheap renewable energy China will run circles around the US' AI programs.
It makes some sense if the plan is to keep things stable for five more years, but that comes with the risk of losing everything afterwards. That can be ok for Trump but not for anybody younger.
Why is there no mutiny?
Khruschev supposedly once said “We will take America without firing a shot. We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within”. Things have changed a bit since then, but I think Putin has always carried a grudge and has invested hugely in kompromat across a broad range of potentially important Americans of the future, for decades. It’s possible that Trump has been a Russian asset since 1987, but regardless of the truth of that detail, it’s clear that Russia and China both stand to benefit hugely from the collapse of US power and global influence. The motive is there, and perhaps it’s also helped by kompromat on every spineless Republican in the legislature rubber stamping the executive agenda.
Let’s stick with facts instead of kompromat theories. Back in March, not long into this administration, the US stopped most cyberoffense against Russia. Before that, they cancelled the FBI task force investigating foreign influence in US elections and also cancelled the task force for seizing Russian oligarch assets. Starts to look like maybe someone in charge has a conflict of interest.
More recently, even having a meeting on Alaskan soil is considered far more significant to Russians than to Americans. There is a slow roll coming here, and Trump is not in the drivers seat.
If you’ll indulge my conspiracy theory hat for a bit, a lot of Russian frozen wasteland has potential to be great farmland with a bit more global warming. With some help from China, the two of them could easily become the dominant countries of the future. Ukraine has a lot of great farmland right now and could jumpstart Russia on the path to agricultural superpower.
You already pointed out:
Cheap energy can be truly instrumental in nation-state conflict. I have a long excerpt for you from Marc Reisner but I promise it’s relevant and worthwhile:
(Emphasis mine)
China doesn’t need sinister reasons for their huge investments in renewable energy. They’re entirely reasonable for transforming their economy to keep times with the 21st century. But one might note that huge amounts of excess energy can be very helpful in conflict, and sinister reasons aren’t typically provable in advance. Frankly the US mostly got lucky in the timing of all that hydroelectric energy coming online, but it sure was critical.
There’s no mutiny because everything is fake news and we’re in a post-truth dystopia. The masses work paycheck to paycheck up to their eyeballs in debt. They don’t have time or energy to care about large scale action, and many of them are under the spell of the fabulist.
Not the masses but what about the third line in command or the heirs to the billionaires' fortunes? They must see their future dissolving.
I don't believe in the Russian takeover. It's all talk while the USA has separated Germany from Russia as envisioned here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grand_Chessboard and split Russia from Iran https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenia%E2%80%93Azerbaijan_peace_agreement .
Of course the USA tries to win over Russia to contain China. But I think everybody is just going through the moves without taking it serious.
Thanks for the excerpt, that was very interesting. To me it means that the US is aware of the need for energy and they must have a reason beyond relatively small profits for the anti-renewable strategy that doesn't come from Moscow.
My guess on the third-string command is that everything has been too fast-moving for large scale organization and the administration has been very aggressive with purging “the deep state” and repeated demonstrations that blind loyalty is the primary qualification for all new political appointments. That also works on the red half of Congress, with primary election challenger threats (and kompromat in my view) being enough to keep them in line in an environment of unhinged voter frenzy. Canceling the Education department is a hope to keep the populace credulous in the future. Critical thinking by the masses is anathema.
I think there are three main drivers behind the anti-renewable strategy. One is quid pro quo political corruption (now legal thanks to Citizens’ United), with a billion oil dollars for campaign and legal defense. People with concentrated capital have power and want to preserve it. Another is an inevitably-unsuccessful attempt to preserve the dominance of the petrodollar as the world reserve currency. I’ve recently come to understand that was the fundamental driver for GWB invading Iraq, which is to say that Hussein had just started selling oil in Euros, breaking a promise that the US had previously extracted from OPEC to only sell in dollars (thereby driving worldwide dollar-demand).
The third is that it spins well with the stereotypical MAGA base who like to detune their diesel truck engines to spew soot solely to anger Prius drivers. They also seem to believe that it’s possible and desirable to return to a huge scale of coal mining jobs, along with other oil and gas extraction. Roughneck work doesn’t require a woke college education and it’s a peak macho job ideal.
As for billionaires and their heirs, it’s better for them to try to preserve the petrodollar and end up ruling over a smoking ruin from their bunkers than to let the petrodollar reserve currency disintegrate and the explosion of national debt service death spiral the US economy. They don’t need to be in Russia or China’s pocket to have their interests sufficiently aligned with this administration’s goals.
The tariffs are supposedly introduced to remove the US dependency on the petro dollar. Supposedly Trump and his supporters want production to be in the USA because they fear that they lose the skills to make the best weapons. For that the dollar mustn't be overvalued so that production doesn't move overseas.
The billionaires are going to lose almost everything if China takes over. There is no way that they are happy with ruling over ruins.
you forget fossil fuel production is all subsidized.
