A microwave plate is the part that spins during heating. It can be removed so it’s easier to clean. Removing it means that food will potentially heat unevenly and there’s usually a gear that the plate attaches to sticking out of the floor like a wart. Anything being heated will have to balance or lean on a slowly spinning gear which will potentially cause other problems.

The joke is that you can't just buy the plate > in a quick manner and must order the replacement and will have to just....suck it up. And the absurdity of what such a theft entails.~~AFAIK the plates are not standard (probably proprietary to that model/brand) so by taking it you probably have to get a whole new microwave if you want it back.~~

E:thank you for the numerous replies saying they are standardized and replaceable.

They have become fairly standard due to consolidation of global manufacturing. I've taken apart a half dozen over the last decade and they all had the same slow mains motor and 3 wing drive mechanism. There are probably lots of exceptions, but the parts inside are pretty simple.

Ah, I wondered. Are they available for separate sale, or are you stuck going to Goodwill then?

if you know the size of the plate you can just go on the internets. the only real variations I see are the diameter. if it's got bearings underneath, now those can be a bastard to size right.

The plates are pretty standard and can be bought online many places.

You can buy a replacement turntable plate! They're not very expensive either.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

of course you can! there is site just for that aliexpress.com

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Probably quicker to order from the manufacturer

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

idk for you but for me usually arrives in 5 days

Depends on the thing. Some stuff they have warehoused wherever nearby, but particular electronic bits have to ship from China.

It’s vengeance. Pure, unhinged, vengeance.

Honestly, I think a big part of what makes this funny, to me anyway, is the "slighted" phrasing. It's kind of an underused/archaic usage, so it sounds inherently a little funny in this modern context. But it also carries the implication that the original wrongdoing that they're attempting to punish wasn't very serious. Which actually makes sense, as this isn't that annoying, just mildly inconvenient. It will still get hot in there, if you're worried about food cooking unevenly, just turn it 180° halfway through.

You reminded me that some have a full bladed structure on wheels attached to that gear as a means of spinning the plate. Pulling this prank on one of those models would be even more diabolical.

I've got one of those. First the plate broke, so we got a new one. Then we moved and somehow lost the rollers. Now neither fit right and I want a new microwave but this one works (except for the turntable sometimes) dammit
