Did I miss the part where they mentioned how this battery tech compares in terms of cost?

Either way, it's all just smoke and mirrors unless it is in a shipping product. We've heard similar claims for a long time now.

I don't think it falls in the same category as the typical sensationalist 'battery breakthrough' headline.

It's a moderate evolution of an existing and well established technology (LFP) by one of the largest players in the field. LFP is a battery chemistry that has long been neglected due to a lower energy density. But it has a better safety profile, a longer service life, is cheaper and uses fewer rare materials, which are all factors that are becoming increasingly important. So in recent years it has received a ton of R&D funding. It was expected that something would come out of it.
