I bought my Steam Deck in March of 2023. Shortly after, I went in for my annual eye check and life took a bit of a strange turn. The Dr at the place I go told me there was an issue with my left eye and that I would need a referral to go to another Optometrist at a facility that has the equipment to do scans, (his room was essentially a closet). I told him I was going on a trip with my daughter the first week of April and would make sure to get the scans done as soon as I got back. He said that I needed to get them scheduled before I left as this could be urgent.

To try and make a long story short, I met with an optometrist at the Medical center where I live and it was discovered that I have unknown swelling in my left eye that is causing issues with my vision. There have been many Doctors, (I am seeing the top Retina Specialist in this area now), many scans, including one that made A Clockwork Orange look like child's play. One of the attempts at treating the swelling was a steroid injection behind my eye, which did nothing but give me a droopy eyelid, glaucoma and a cataract. The swelling has remained unfazed in over a year now.

The Retina Specialist has decided to stop trying to fix the issue as everything that has been tried has really only caused more harm that good. She got me in touch with a surgeon to have the cataract removed so that the vision I do have in my left eye will at least be clear again.

I had that surgery last Monday.

Tuesday, I went in for the Post Op appointment, and I CAN SEE OUT OF MY LEFT EYE AGAIN! By no means is it perfect, but I can see well enough to be able to USE MY BEAUTIFUL STEAM DECK AGAIN!

Sorry for all the blah blah blah, but it's been a long journey to essentially get right back where I started, and I really just wanted to have a cry while I shared my story.

Love this community and am happy to be a part of it again!

I wanted to try a couple fan-made games, Dungeons of Infinity and Bloodborne PSX. I knew about proton but still thought .exe files wouldn't run properly. Grabbed both of the fan-made games, told Steam where the .exe files are, renamed the titles and added pictures from SteamGrid, told it to use proton and bam, they are in game mode and run flawlessly! With the pictures in all the proper areas, they even look legit!

It's really cool what you can do with this device.

I realize this is comparing apples to seven course meal, with applesauce on the side- I decided to return a recent purchase of the PS Portal and ordered the Steamdeck Oled 1TB - I feel better already, and I haven’t even got it yet. I was really trying to like the portal, but just couldn’t justify keeping it, and yes, I’d rather spend a LOT more for the Steam Deck. I’m sure the portal is a fine choice for some users, just not me.

As im writing this im realizing I should probably just emulate it for the classic feel, but still I do prefer having games on steam.

if you look at recent Steam reviews on GTA V and sort it by positive you can see it for yourself and they're still coming in as I'm posting this. it's strange that it's happening right after Rockstar started getting criticised for removing Steam Deck/Linux compatibility.

some screenshots I grabbed from it:

As the title says... I'm basically going in with a pretty blank slate as I've been a console gamer for most of my life. I do have a few games on my Steam account like Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2 but I'd like to ask you guys; what are some games you'd recommend to get, especially for the Steam Deck? It can be anything, big or small; doesn't have to be a massive RPG despite the titles I named up there.
