The plague is still around. Black-tailed prairie dogs can carry it in the US.
Between one and two thousand cases of the plague are reported globally every year. Being in Arizona, they may have gotten it from being in contact with black-tailed prairie dogs.

My only option is the local city bus. For me to go eight miles straight east to where my work is, I'd have to transfer twice, go a couple miles north of where my destination is, and leave home at least two hours before my shift. By car, it takes less than 15 minutes.

Agreed. On the holiday, even a bit on the weekend is fine. But last year we had one asshole somewhere in the neighborhood who was setting off those ones that are literally just a large booming noise until at least 12am for about la week straight. This year has been much more reserved. I'm thinking they either moved or possibly their immediate neighbors threatened them.
Most vehicles don't even seem to have transmission dipsticks at all, now.
