... On notepad?

Oh come on, use some word editor if you need autocorrect. Notepad is a quick fast text editor that is mostly used for script editing and small stuff, its supposed to be just a plain text editor.

Having said that, I will shut up but still think that notepad never needed a rehaul.

Domains are cheap, shop around and get the cheapest 1st level you find, and buy a second level under that one.

For example, mylemmy.eu since .eu are by far the cheapest I can buy over here. It can go from 1 buck to 20 Buck per year, even more for special 1st levels (like .love)

The issue here is the USB stick, not the router. Use WiFi no problem but self hosting on a 32gb stick is a disaster waiting to happen, specially with a write intensive task as lemmy.

Edit: go on and experiment. Even with an USB stick... Then after you make experience try with something more stable, like a small pi is well enough or an older PC too is fine.

He just want you to use your brain and try out stuff by yourself. Go on!

Get a switch, a cheap 5 ports gigabit one is only like 10 bucks or 20 if you want a reputable brand (not needed).

Or just use WiFi...

See here https://wiki.gardiol.org/doku.php?id=services%3Alemmy for specific lemmy instructions and here https://wiki.gardiol.org/doku.php?id=networking%3Aexternal_access for how to remote access stuff.

While Ethernet is recommended, WiFi will work as well.

The above links are my personal experience only and indeed YEMV.

100% agree.

One point: use an SSO like authelia or authentic. Way better than basic auth and you get the fancy login form too preserving all the benefits, and you can also use OIDC with those services that require more complex setup for proper auth

Yes. The fearmongering of the security freaks is not necessarily true. We selfhosters are not big targets and nobody cares about our files or our devices.

Of course, until you get hacked.

But beside SMTP and ssh and known services like WordPress or PrestaShop there is little actual brute force bots trying hard.

Thank you! This is exactly why I do my wiki, so that people can use and benefit from the work I did before.

Mmm as for the admin console, I will add that, it had slipped from my wiki it seems!

Would it make a difference?

Its not an English speaking country and its in Europe.

My point stand true for all major European languages like French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and many more.

My native language is directly derived from Latin and we have a very interleaved history with all Eu countries.

I am using English here because this is an English community.

This thread is full of people who think English is the only language in the world. Its not, every language calls places with their own fashion, often different from how they are called natively. Its just how stuff works when in a country people simply don't speak the "other" language and don't share the same sounds either.

Calling the places with their original spelling will only create confusion because in that language, that place has a different name.

Its called translations and its how languages work, get over it.

I don't want no English telling me what I need to call a country or a city, thank you, I already have that in my native language, ah! :)
