I'm not going to bet against AI in the long run, but I wonder if ChatGPT (in its current form) will gain mass adoption.

It will be very interesting to see at what price they can commercialize this. Converting excess renewable energy into long-term storage is a necessity for a 100% renewable electricity grid. The toughest problem for an all-renewables grid is the rare times that there are extended periods of low wind and backup solutions are needed to keep the electricity grid going. There are many, many researchers all around the world working on this problem, and this is yet another promising possibility.

By now we're all aware of how damaging plastics are to our health, via the spread of microplastics in water. These particles are everywhere in nature now, and showing up in ever greater quantities in our bodies.

Surprisingly, this issue isn't being treated with more urgency. Perhaps because we've yet to find a truly horrifying example of what they'll do to humans. Recent research suggests they can cross the blood-brain barrier in human brains - perhaps something like that will be the wake-up call? Meanwhile, it's good to know people are working on alternatives.

Lemmy Devs are aware there is an issue with 2FA and are working on it.

For now, until its fixed, we would recommend you don't use 2FA.

On futurology.today ( !futurology@futurology.today ) - our main community is https://futurology.today/c/futurology

However, we'd also like to have separate sections of the site for meta, casual chatting, etc Further along we might even want to have more separate sections by topic - AI, robotics, space, etc So far, I've been creating those as communities.

This all gets very confusing for new users, especially migrants from r/futurology on Reddit, who are often encountering the fediverse for the first time.

Any suggestions on how to handle this better?

While I am definitely on the side of labor when it comes to the Hollywood strike, I wonder if their position is ultimately doomed. There are going to be some people happy to license their likeness for next to nothing.

Interesting that they are talking about this as a prototype for a fully autonomous space craft.

I'm one of the r/futurology mods, and involved in setting up our new Lemmy instance - https://futurology.today

While we don't want to spam our user base, we'd still like the site to do well and promote it. We've 19 million subscribers, and by far the most traffic we get is the top posts that get on people's front page or r/all. We've sometimes used stickied comments in these posts, but I'm wary of doing that, as many users might perceive it as spam.

Any advice for promoting our site, bearing in mind 95%+ of eyeballs go to these top posts.?

Here's our onboarding announcement.
