We should be grateful for every vegan trying to save animals/planet/... and generally leading their life in a way that does not fuck up everything for everyone else.

For every "annoying vegan" there are 100 annoying non-vegans complaining about them on the internet

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 0 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

But they are least don't wear bells

[–] udon@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

How do you know that?

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was once at my dad's birthday party and he invited like 20 boomer aged people. The food was pretty absurd. There were like 6 kinds of meat. And not much else. I was the only one there not eating anything, i kinda was just there to say hi, play with my niece and nephew and then bolt. Oh the fun they had making jokes about vegans that evening.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

You forget that they have few interests and little else in common than ragging on the next generation.

You could be inhaling a sausage scarf draped around your neck, and they'd still find fault with the car you drive, the money you spend on percieved frivolities, and anything that seperates you from them

For every “annoying vegan” there are 100 annoying non-vegans complaining about them on the internet

and a million people who just don't eat meat because they think it's gross. They didn't feel the need to build a cult around it.

Some context: This woman was trying to prohibit farmers from equipping their cows with bells, because she felt that they made too much noise. The population in this rural and traditional village did not like that, as they disliked people interfering with their traditions (especially since she was no swiss citizen). Some months later, she asked for naturalization, which was promptly denied by the popular vote in the village.

[–] turdcollector69@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (18 children)

The bells were measured and found to Be loud enough to damage the cows hearing.

If I recall correctly the bells right at like 100db which is like a concert or a lawnmower.

I think it's kinda cruel to the cows but I also get where it's crazy to show up, tell everyone how to shit and then expect to be invited into the community for it.

So she didn't object to killing cows? The problem was the bell making noise? Ok, denial justified.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I could see an argument for the noise being detrimental to the cows and her trying to pick her battles in a Swiss cattle farming town. I guess she still didn’t hit the mark.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Its a proven fact that cow bells cause hearing loss in cows. But we do a lot worse stuff to animals, so IDK. Does the reduced chance of getting mauled by a predator make the hearing damage worth it?

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

I mean, I would not want to be kept “safe” in those conditions, so I wouldn’t consider it worth it

[–] Corridor8031@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

what predator is this supposed to be that hunts cows in switzerland?

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

They have wolves, the population is actually growing.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It’s so the farmers can find lost cows

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Like a Predator hunting humans armed with spears

Sometimes they hunt back but mostly on accident

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 6 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Wait does naturalization get tied to an election in Switzerland?

[–] nazgul666@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It depends on your municipality. In some they have local ballots where every candidate has to be approved. If they are denied because of racist (or similar) reasons, they can appeal the decision to a court. I believe the cow-bell-lady did that, but i dont remember the outcome.

Edit: did some research, she was granted citizenship recently. Here is an article about her (in english): https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/society/swiss-passport_dutch-troublemaker-finally-granted-swiss-citizenship/43143162

The actual annoying people are the ones who complain about (often imaginary) annoying vegans. Same with the anti-apple crowd, they're 100 times more annoying than the people who they complain about. Same as people who call others snowflakes mostly being the actual snowflakes themselves.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago

Also this story is very old but gets reposted all the time always explicitly stirring anti-vegan snark with captions like "Least annoying vegan".

The meat industry is one of the worst polluters on the planet and they spend a lot of money pushing anti-vegan sentiment.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 2 points 1 day ago

I was thinking for a second who is against apples.

I've read about this person before, and they sound genuinely insufferable for multiple reasons, the cowbell thing being just one of them.

Basically, they moved to another country, in the countryside, and immediately started telling everyone around them they were living their lives wrong and should change. Basically the opposite of what naturalisation means.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah I remember a podcast about her. The cowbell thing was probably the least annoying part. She ran an equally aggressive campaign to get the church bells silenced (lady really hates bells). She also had aggressive campaigns against hunting and pig racing. So basically she was against most of the major past times and cultural aspects of the town.

[–] remon@ani.social 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ok, I actually kind of like her now. Those are annoying as hell if you live next to them.

But I'm sure as hell not gonna talk about it until after I have my citizenship.

[–] pressanykeynow@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I agree that bells are annoying. That's why I don't live in a place with bells. Moving to a place with some traditions and trying to change those traditions is just shitty behaviour.

They moved there at eight years old

[–] Cheesus@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

Can confirm, she was featured in a program about Swiss naturalisation that I watched the other day. There were plenty of other candidates who were trying to integrate that were much less annoying than her, yet they still were having difficulty. It doesn't surprise me one bit that they denied her.
