Krone says ‘alarming’ levies on about 400 goods including hair dryers and combine harvesters have forced pause

One of Europe’s biggest farm machinery companies, Krone, has been forced to pause exports of large equipment to the US because of “alarming” and little-known new tariffs that are hitting hundreds of products from knitting needles and hair dryers to combine harvesters.

Among the products on the steel derivatives list drawn up in consultation with US manufacturers, Donald Trump is taxing 407 specific products ranging from tiny embroidery stilettos to cooker hoods, barbecues, fridges, freezers, dishwashers, hair curling tongs, grills, elevators, bridge and railway structures, agriculture equipment and wind turbines.

It has meant that since 18 August, companies such as Krone and the construction company Liebherr in Germany have to provide an unprecedented level of detail to customs border authorities certifying the origin, weight and value of any steel in their products right down to nuts and bolts.

Asked what his US customers were saying, he said: “Many of them are surprised. When they saw Mr Trump talk about tariffs, they got the impression that the foreign companies are paying these tariffs, but what they now figure out is that it is the customer who pays.

That about sums up the IQ level of Trump voters. A huge issue, because these gullible idiots make up the majority of votes.

The paragon of free markets learning about how free markets work.

Exporter: "Why would I pay the tarrifs? I'm competing with prices as it is, I'd run a deficit."

Importer: "Well why would I pay the tarrifs? I don't even want the thing."

Consumer: "Well why would I pay the tarrifs?"

Exporter: "Okay, goodbye. We're shifting US market funds to elsewhere."

Elsewhere: Thanks, US! Competitively lower prices and higher quality products."

Most interesting part is all the shipping companies that have just cut out the US due to all the companies bailing. My partners been advised by DHL they'll do it, but it costs more now because of low traffic and the US buyer has to foot the bill first + the tarrif. But obviously my partner's company decided they're not shipping to the US anyway. It's like a "special order" thing to contact them about.

Impacts the US companies in the industry too since all the best materials for that industry come from Asia. They may be US-based but focusing on international markets instead too, since obviously sales of their products with tariffs on the price will drop sales massively.

No body on earth could've seen this coming. Absolutely nobody. Not a single person. No one. The day tarrifs were mentioned, couldn't have seen this coming from miles away. Absolute shock.

Its about 50/50 , Hillary had the popular vote during his first election. This country is more sexist than racist

Yes, it’s totally the fault of -ism’s, and not at all from the weak pathetic oligarchic Dem party platform.

It's always the customer who pays. I thought people knew that by now.

Everyone knew this except about half of the US population. We've been screaming it at them for years but as usual they were incapable of caring about anything until it directly affected them.

[–] iridebikes@lemmy.world 19 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

They've been told the whole time. But since it's the libs telling them, they won't listen and actively do the opposite. We should tell them rat poison doesn't taste great and to not eat it.

Unfortunately, I am fairly certain that they will not learn anything from this either. Instead, they will probably prefer to assume that foreign manufacturers are also lying to them in order to maintain their completely absurd worldview.

They convinced themselves that every other major government in the world, as well as every single scientist and most other people were lying to them about Covid.

I remember extended family members going on about how it's a hoax as they were dying in the hospital from it

Some people will flip the universe inside out, upside down, and throw it in a blender to make their world view okay.

Everything to destroy US farming, right? Block exports of crops, block imports of necessary machinery.

[–] Dionysus@leminal.space 8 points 17 hours ago

Yeah but we're great again!

Right!

Right!??!

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 17 points 19 hours ago

Specifically in the context of farm machinery: Any unsold equipment already in the US has just lost a ton of its value, since customers are going to be less likely to trust that they'll be able to get parts. Any privately owned equipment just lost a ton of its resale value, for the same reason.

I wonder if the USA will run out of essential items before or after the next election.

[–] tortina_original@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago

Next election? 😂

Now Carney needs to break the US.

Cut off potash.
