I'm sorry, what? May I ask what model so I can avoid it forever please?

[–] wulrus@lemmy.world 44 points 3 weeks ago (7 children)

PHILIPS HD9880/90 Airfryer Combi XXL. I can select a recipe in the app and send it, so the settings are perfect for that.

But the downside is that it goes off like a smoke detector and blocks all controls and display until I rate the recipe or select "skip", on the air fryer display.

Man, it amazes me how much worse smart devices are compared to the "basic" version. I have to press buttons on my air fryer to get it going, but it only ever tells at me to put food in and turn it before telling me to eat it.

Oh man, this drips of Fallout: New Vegas - The Big Empty or whatever where the machines around the house would talk to you.

Mine also beeps and has to push a bunch of buttons. I have to hit a button to turn it on then off as well as a timer if I choose to use it. It's also part of my oven so I have to open the door and put in a tray. It beeps when it's at the temperature and if I do decide to use the timer. It's so annoying.

But seriously why are people using smart appliances? I've yet to see one that's actually good.

But seriously why are people using smart appliances? I've yet to see one that's actually good.

If I'm being honest, I totally understand the appeal, in concept. Like, it would be nice for my washer/dryer/food machine to be able to ping me when it's done or let me see certain stats/metrics/maintenance things remotely.

But corpo "smart" devices are rarely giving you much useful info while also trying you to corpo cloud services that can disappear over night, harvests all kinds of data, forces shitty "features" on you, shows ads or even locks you out entirely if it can't talk to the mother ship (because fuck you, that's the manufacturer's device, peasant scum!), there's no reason to use them.

I have a handful of 'smart' features in my house, but it's all local only and uses home assistant because I'm not going to let some corpo scum update some TOS and decide I can't use my goddamned hardware anymore.

It does feel delightfully lazy to pick a recipe and send the settings with one tap. But the forced rate-or-skip spoils much of the fun.

Also basically, it's time and temperature. It's not like a Fallout-style robot that cooks complex meals for me. Could do without.

I like my smart lights, being able to control them from my phone is amazing. But that's about it. Don't have anything else.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

Fuck everything about that.

lol fuck that noise, literally.
Unsolder the piezo.

Pro tip: Since it obviously has wifi or something, it has an FCC id printed somewhere (probably next to the model/serial number).
Search the fccid.io website for that number and there'll be photos of its insides which can help you figure out how to open it, know where the piezo is likely to be, and neuter that loud fucker.
I've done a kettle that would beep 80ish dBA everytime it started, it was done, or when you put it back in the base.

Alnyway, an air fryer is big enough that it's probably not as complicated to disassemble as smaller tighter devices.
Specifically about this, the fccid might be only the wireless module inside and not the whole thing, so maybe not as helpful.

Obviously, unplug it from mains before opening. Insert all applicable disclaimers about not burning down your house or maiming yourself.

[–] camelbeard@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

For child toys that beep I used to put some tape on the speaker holes. But my kid used to take it off. You can cut a wire or desolder, but my simpe fix was a glob of glue directly on the speaker it turns it down like 80%. So some sound, but definitely not as annoying.

[–] Rebels_Droppin@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks for sharing, that's wild

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 7 points 3 weeks ago

No, the true downside is when they stop supporting the app or turn off the servers and it becomes a heavy piece of e-waste...

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

My rule for appliances is that if it has recipes, it can directly fuck off.

[–] Zkuld@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, we need the customer to have a more engaging experience with our product. It is too fast right now. Also find a way to integrate social media into the process, our studies show that most people like social media.

...how I imagine the prototype meeting must have gone.

[–] GetAwayWithThis@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm sorry, how many recipes do you need for air frying food? It controls temps and time. What other variable is there to warrant app connectivity?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

whether the convection fan is on or off i guess

[–] kayohtie@pawb.social 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's an air fryer, it's always on. Otherwise that's just a toaster oven.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

to my knowledge, the difference between an air fryer and a convection toaster oven is that the air fryer has a stronger fan. either way, with mine (it was called an air fryer on the box at the big box store) you can choose whether the fan is on or off.

we rarely use our actual oven now since the countertop thing works so much faster.

[–] kayohtie@pawb.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

That's kinda cool! Most don't do that.

As far as differences Alec at Technology Connections has a solid video pointing it out better. It's more about the ratios involved between fan, element size, and volume of area to cook within. The result is basically the ratio skewed absurdly in the favor of air friers over ovens, plus putting out less total heat. So stronger fan is part of the equation at least!

Why y'all buying smart appliances? I thought we learned this lesson with grills and fridges.

Hold that thought, my smart underpants are telling me I have a notification.
