Giant, uncomfortable, hardbacked, scraping across the floor to push back, as heavy as my sins and twice as ugly?

Miss it every day. Times were more simple. Now my computer chair has rollerblade wheels....

gaming chair was invented in 2006

is this true?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 14 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yep, according to wikipedia.

The first ergonomic gaming chairs were produced by DXRacer around 2006, a company that was originally known for producing high-end seats for luxury cars. However, the company began to experience difficulties with Chrysler discontinuing multiple lines of cars, leading to DXRacer repurposing their stockpile of bucket seats into standalone chairs, marketed towards gamers.[5] In 2008, more companies began to produce gaming chairs.[1]

Sure, but there were ergonomic office chairs and normal office chairs before "gaming" chairs, and they were pretty similar. The ergonomic chair I had in 2006 was better than any gaming chair I've sat in.

The meme is pretty funny though. God I hate those desks with ornate wood coming down below the tabletop.

They didn't start marketing office chairs to gamers before 2006. Many people I knew used an office chair for PC gaming and their couch or a futon for console gaming. Kids also used those tiny little chairs that are shaped like a little L or bean bag chairs.

Which is hilarious because most "gamers chairs" are just branded overpriced regular chairs. The quality is subpar compared to an equally priced normal chair. It's just a moron tax.

Go look up racing sim seats. Then look up a real seat you'd put in your car. Real seats will often be much cheaper than a sim racing seat. One company even sells a sim kit that includes a seat that is clearly a normal seat from a different company and marked up.

You're better off buying "normal" products than gamer versions a lot of times. They just add flashy colors for the most part.

I mean invented is a strong word. A gaming chair is usually an cheap office chair in the cool gaming style with a hefty price increase. Nothing special about it.

The real gaming chair.

I remember having folding chairs for the computer desk throughout most of the 90's.

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

And when you were done using the computer, the chair went back to its designated place between the desk and the wall.

Mine just stood there, in the way, until it gave out and then we brought out another folding chair just like it. And boy were these folding chairs heavy.

Beautiful ... mine looked like the one pictured here but one size smaller. It was an old antique chair that my wife kept for years dreaming that she would reupholster it some day. Big giant wooden back with a piece of fabric cushion, giant uncomfortable armrests, sharp wooden seat lining and a collapsed center cushion that I filled with pillows and blankets .... it was my captain's chair for about the first five years of being online in the late 90s. I can still hear the dial up sound of the modem as I adjusted the pillows and fabrics for another session of being online ..... and then shouting at my wife to not use the phone as I lost my connection again.

It's prolly uncomfortable AF and I still want it so bad.

Recliner TV armchair. Gaming chairs are for noobs!

[–] benderbeerman@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

This is so not untrue that it is almost not funny enough to be a joke. I still have back problems from those days

My family just got whatever overstuffed CEO's desk chairs looked comfy from Mad Man Mund's. Had a vintage orange one for a while, that one was great.

[–] Coldgoron@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

You joke but I had an upholstered armchair playing wow in 2005.

[–] gdelopata@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago

Bonus points: look like a true boss on work video calls.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 3 points 9 months ago

Back in that era, I had a chair that was just a rigid tube frame with nice cloth-covered padding. It was like a waiting room chair rather than an office chair.

That thing was S-tier PC gaming seating for a decade. One time a joint broke and I used somebody’s welder to fix it and get a few more years.

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago

Don't remind me I had a kitchen chair for a long time before I bought my proper chair... My back men... My back..

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

We used to use one of our dining room table chairs.

...Opulent and imperial. Gazing proudly from its stoic perch before the desk. I lived all my years in that ancient, rumor-shadowed seat. Fattened by decadence and luxury...

It's paraphrasing the intro voiceover from Darkest Dungeon, which the post title reminded me of. (It starts "You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial...")
