I have but I'm like "nah it's not even Autumn yet" and electricity bills ain't getting any lower
Technically autumn is only 9 days away. And normally we get storms around the Equinox (21 Sep and 21 March), this year it feels like they've come early.
Tip: anyone thinking that locking yourself in to a fixed energy tariff is a good idea, switch to a variable one. The fixed is essentially the maximum price.
Yup, because I refuse to live in a cold house and enjoy the feeling of warmth so much.
I'll make sacrifices elsewhere if I need to, feeling permenantly cold won't be one of them.
When I was at uni a friend who was looking for a flat said something that kind of blew my mind about what I had been looking for with places to live. I pointed out that he could have saved a chunk of money a month on rent by getting a different place. He said "Yeah, but I've got to think about my standard of living."
It's not wasteful to use energy if you're making use of it.
What an interesting take, almost the opposite of what we see with people living outside their means.
So the friend was saying that to get a cheaper place would have a negative impact on their standard of living. I wish I could think more like this sometimes.
Nope. It’s still ok here, still leave windows open at night.
Our new build home with this much sun is still warm most of the time. The heating app is showing that the house easily stays above 22° even through the night currently. The thermostat is left unchanged year round to come on when house internal day time temp goes below 18. The Mrs has started using her heated blanket before bed though.
If you're further north in a poorly insulated property then I imagine the heating is going to be needed soon.
Nope, it's usually about November when ours goes on.
Yeah, it's 13c outside now. I'm gonna start moving the plants in for fall, and today was the first day I really needed to wear extra layers. I miss summer....
Are you American living in the UK out of interest? Just that I notice you say "fall" but still refer to Celsius temperature.

Haha, fair. Hell, mixing up imperial and metric should be a sure sign you're British lol
I want all of north America to switch to metric. Canada is hell for that, they use an eclectic mix of both units for various things like weight, temperature, speed and volume.
I'll be so happy if cooking is finally in mL and grams instead of tablespoons and ounces, haha.

It's an old house. And I am very delicate and feel the cold keenly 😢
Old houses, particularly old village houses made of wattle and daub, can be amazing. They can have a thermal lag where they're cool inside in the middle of summer yet warm inside in the middle of winter.
Octopus Energy are having a free hour of electricity today, so I turned the heat pump and electric heater on just now. It got down to 19.5 in the morning, which is far too cold for me...

Being a scrooge in a house which has all the thermal efficiency of a pile of wet cardboard, my thermostat is set at 18 (and occasionally creeping up to 19) anyway.
I'm just glad that things are finally cooling down to a more civilised temperature...

It's been a very hot summer, but it's back to more normal temperatures now.
Although it's still pretty warm, to be honest. I think today might be the first day it's failed to get above 18 C in the day.
I've been tempted, the thermostat is showing very low temperatures and it's in one of the warmer rooms of the house. Having a shitty rental with a poor EPC rating will do that unfortunately. Just had the mini heater on this morning to bring the room up to 18°C, trying to leave the central heating for at least another month.
Well, we're probably going to start using the fireplace again soon, but it's bearable for the time being.
Huh, here in Texas, we typically just have a thermostat.
If the house goes over the temp we set, air conditioning comes on. If it goes under, heat comes on.
If you want to save money, you set a wider range of acceptable temps.
So if you don't care about saving money, you will put it at 68 to 72. Or whatever your ideal is, and if you want to save some $ you set it to 60 to 78.
And then your house is 78 for 80% of the year.
