How does that work? Wouldn't the absence of predator results in a lack of evolutive pressure to grow larger?

Nah they just get bigger and fatter and softer, like capybaras and scions of generational wealth
look at US presidents. the current one is a predator and is yuge. nothing can kill him because he has a self-defense mechanism that covers himself in shit to make himself seem less appealing.
