Usually south park’s relevancy feels very fake and surface level to me, but it’s really something how trump and his base are actually, visibly much more enraged by this than they’ve been about any other criticism, any other show, any other enemy I’ve seen in the entire near-decade of his political career. Fucking South Park got to them more than the combined effort of a million other comedians, journalists, parodies, academic criticisms or protest efforts. Like it’s BAD. Like they want the creators in prison and want to consider this a hate crime.

What they actually do in this episode that has magas losing their shit, besides Trump dating Satan:

-The same voice and even distinct music they used for Saddam Hussein 26 years ago is used for Trump, with Satan complaining that Trump is exactly like his ex.

-Trump is depicted threatening to sue an artist for not painting him with a bigger penis than he actually has.

-The media is depicted as spinelessly holding back their true feelings about Trump to avoid getting sued.

-A B-plot has Cartman wanting to kill himself because he no longer feels “special” in an America that has become more hateful than he is.

-Jesus Christ is depicted as having also been silenced by a Trump lawsuit and lives in fear of saying anything bad about Trump out loud.

-Epstein is brought up of course.

-The episode ends airing a convincing AI deepfake of Trump stripping naked as he wanders through a desert, then his tiny floppy penis sprouts cartoon eyes and says “I’m Donald Trump and I approved this message.” This is the part magas believe should count as an actual felony crime, and funny enough also comes right after Trump gave a rambling speech endorsing AI and an executive order to protect it from liability.

It’s only been a day or two, and is now the first time in history that the white house is officially arguing with a tv show.

Not paying that much attention to the world of television and celebrities I did not know the broader context that Trump had sued Paramount over 60 Minutes, Paramount paid Trump a 16 million dollar settlement, and then it cancelled Stephen Colbert’s tonight show out of fear.

But that this all happened around the same time they had just purchased the rights to South Park for 1.5 billion (BILLION.) dollars.

So this is matt stone and trey parker daring both trump and their own network to shut them down after the latter invested a hundred times as much money in South Park as Trump originally shook them down for.

The order was for 50 whole episodes, and they labeled the Trump Deepfake as 1/50. We’ll see if they actually keep going with this and keep escalating it, which in my opinion would be the morally right thing to do. Trump would have to choose between enduring mockery he demonstrably can’t take and proving all their mockery more and more correct, while Paramount has to choose between enduring whatever punishment a raging manbaby POTUS brings down on them or proving how spineless they are AND losing a 1.5 billion investment. All after they cowered before Trump over a relatively measly few million.

as is so frequently the case, the story of a show's production is more interesting than the actual show

This is bad analysis though. Colbert was cancelled because nobody, and I mean not a single person I know, watches the late show anymore. Not because it's too political but because the writing is bad, it's basically a 5 minute monologue with the rest of the show just being advertisements or celebrity endorsements. It's a dying television format on its last legs. Why would you ever watch it in the era of YouTube, streaming, or roku? That is why basically every late show has been canceled.

Basically, if the Late show was sued, which I doubt it would have been but let's assume, there is no way for them ever to make up the lost money, for how little they were making from it anyways. South Park on the other hand, continues to have a cult following of dipshits even through the shitty comedy central streaming years. They've survived the streaming purges because of their moronic fan base, who will cough up plenty of money to continue watching the show. They are worth taking a punch in the dick for.

The show was ended, bari weiss was brought on to advice CBS on their political output, skydance promised to make more Israel and us friendly content, they paid Trump off and their merger was immediately granted. Like that all happened at the same time. Come on.

It's such a lame "satire," complete drivel, and now it's taking up air that much more important attacks on the WH enjoyed. I genuinely believe the WH is centering South Park not because it feels threatened but because it knows that this vacuous culture war pablum is much less of a concern than Epstein or Gaza or the BBB or anything else.

[–] Comrade_Mushroom@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not a great strategy if the thing they're centering is also focusing on Epstein.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Honestly, is the Epstein case really an existential threat to Trump's clique? I feel like Americans, by and large, already accepted that they were ruled by pedophiles (at some vibes level) years ago. I think the spectacle this year has always been about the potential to turn it into an unstoppable media scandal based on any substantial evidence.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

A lot of chuds are mad about it and it's contributing a lot towards the growing rift between right-wing influencers. There's the group that's directly on US government payroll (Ben Shapiro, Benny Johnson, Charlie Kirk etc) and there's the group of grifters who are noticing the discontent in Trump's base (Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens etc.).

Is the Epstein case an existential threat that can end the Trump administration? Probably not, but it's another crack in the foundation. And Trump certainly feels threatened by it.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

With how official news outlets ignore these things, it doesn't really matter. For the people still on the mainstream, they stopped hearing updates about Gaza basically a week after Oct 7th.

Of course, mass media - as it existed in the 20th century - is a waning thing. Increasingly, individuals select their own media diet. In that case, people either choose to see whatever wider news they pick (regardless of what the White House is centering)... or they just... dont.

The Simpson's would like a word with you.

[–] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago

the "simpsons did it first" meme strikes again

Bonus points since The Simpsons was actually funny

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 54 points 1 month ago

Trey and Matt are still seething that Ron Paul isn't President for Life.

[–] mrfugu@hexbear.net 48 points 1 month ago

I can’t say I predicted this or saw it coming but I’m not really surprised by either the episode or the reaction. Matt & Trey are some punk asses who refuse to be told what to do regardless of what it is and like 60% of the chud maga base is south park’s target demographic. The commentary was really shallow all they said is trump is very powerful [through corruption and our broken legal system] and that he’s like sadam hussein which feels like a totally amerikkkan vibes-based comparison.

[–] Soot@hexbear.net 42 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

The peak of political commentary in America: "Bad guy is bad and has small peepee and would date Satan". This commentary is just childish empty nothingness designed to "shock" - exactly like all of South Park, and exactly why I'm just not interested in it.

I basically couldn't give a shit about the money and the lawsuits. This is just the bourgeois class slapping tiny fines on each other. Trump probably isn't even personally aware of when "he" sued Paramount.

I mean please go and insult Trump to your heart's content, there's a lot of room for humour in criticism. But when something like this is one of the most popular stories, it's harmful and makes light of ongoing horrors. It moves the conversation away from "Trump and this system obviously should be stopped at all costs" to "haha orange man bad". Does the episode even mention that Trump is supporting a genocide??

Libs think it's funny and now sit back because Democratic Satire TM is done. Rightwingers get to say people hate Trump for no valid reason. And so we go on.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I don't actually think its insignificant that the us government is extorting media and press outlets to both switch their output to a more hard-line fascist line AND for direct monetary payouts actually.

[–] Soot@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Of course it's awful, but so long as a bourgeois class exists, they will pressure media, yes.

I'm not saying that the lawsuits aren't bad, just that it doesn't make this show any more 'important' or worthy of attention.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It's irrelevant that the show isn't some grand revolutionary text. The fascists are engaging in open and petty censorship of even mild criticism of their agenda, and the ownership of the media is kowtowing and promising openly to be more fascist. That's bad.
Dismissing that because the institution it's happening to right now is super lib just means you've taken the lib dunking instinct too far.

It’s so weird whenever I see this guy’s blog or work posted because I used to post on a small message board with him in high school and he had no aspirations of ever making a living off of art, he was just a very sensitive weirdo who would post his monster pictures and mostly just got made fun of a lot. Glad he’s sort of internet-famous now, he’s a sweet guy.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 39 points 1 month ago

I feel like a big part of why this is getting chuds mad is that they thought, with plenty of reason, that South Park was on their side.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 39 points 1 month ago

Never watched this garbage juice and I won't start now just because chuds who are frightened of their own shadow got pissy

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 39 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Matt and Trey, welcome to the resistance.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 month ago (2 children)

They're not part of the resistance; they're merely perpetuating the culture war and this particular battle will go no where; the oligarchy is on the list and the oligarchy owns the system that people are expecting to punish the people on the list

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 month ago

", welcome to the resistance." is a recurring meme here whenever someone makes milquetoast criticisms of Orange Hitler.

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

I think he was joking.

:i-hate-the-antichrist: I WILL NOT WATCH SOUTH PARK I WILL NOT WATCH SOUTH PARK

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

it wouldn't be funny anyway lol no need to struggle

it is funny that such a dogshit attack on trump is something that's riled people up

OR IT'S MORE EPSTEIN DISTRACTION, HMMM

[–] Barabas@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Trump supporters are the same kind of people who call Obama a gay Kenyan Muslim satan. This kind of low effort attack is entirely within their wheelhouse and that is why they are so mad about it.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Trump is so thin skinned he's still pissed off about Rosie O'Donnell making fun of him 20 years ago. Chuds also thought South Park was on their side (and for the most part it is tbh).

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

100000000% it's just matt and trey's libertarian propaganda project

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 35 points 1 month ago (1 children)

South Park has been garnering massive waves of outrage from the conservatives for decades. They'll go back to bashing the left to maintain their claim of being enlightened centrists within the year

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

South Park been doing the 'Have you considered both sides are bad? The worst crime you can commit is caring about something' schtick for 30 years. Being wrong is a successful business model.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago
[–] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

I love that leftists rightfully call out south park for being the creatively bankrupt and boring trash that it is

[–] Agrajag@scribe.disroot.org 19 points 1 month ago

them calling south park "fourth rate" is going to live in my head forever

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Oh hey, Bogleech.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I think they should have gone the route of Matt C's o.g. SNL suggestion: constant, over the top portrayal of trump as a big baby shitting endlessly in a diaper.

if the goal is to make maga mad with entertaining slop, you can't do some cerebral Tony Gilroy thing. just play the hits like "u r a stupid poopy baby." maybe give it some bite by making a constant, huge deal about Epstein.

I saw the ep, because it appeared before me in a moment of zero effort and curiosity got to me. first EP of SP I've seen in something thing crazy, like 15 years probably. the AI generated PSA was probably the best part, just because it was crazy/surreal.

like I kinda get why people are talking about it, because most legacy media criticism of trump is polite and intellectual, "how dare you, sir" type of posturing crap for musical theater nerds.
